  1. Barn swallows? They've got a deeply forked tail, dark blue back and rusty underparts. They seem to me like more acrobatic fliers even when compared to other swallows. Certainly smaller than nighthawk, but lots of small birds will harass larger ones. And they will definitely swoop down to drink from pools.
  2. I went to the Columbus Zoo constantly as a kid from 1988-93 before moving to Texas. I'm sure it played a role in inspiring my love and curiosity for the natural world to this day. This news sucks
  3. IF you got to choose, how high would your chances of rescue need to be to risk otherwise dying in a vessel gradually filling with piss, shit and panic VS instantaneous death from hull failure or whatever?
  4. Interstellar is the superior theater experience, but Arrival is a better movie.
  5. I watched it back in 2018 and loved it, then rewatched a couple of years ago when my wife first got pregnant. Hits hard. I might be due for another rewatch.
  6. How does it feel to have your livelihood based on a lie? Why don't you study somethijg more realistic, like Bigfoot or merpeople?
  7. I went on July 4th weekend in 2017. It was very crowded, need to hit trailheads early and probably take the shuttle. I don't remember accessibility, but I'm sure you could get around a fair amount near the visitor center at the top of the going to the sun road. That drive itself is incredible without even getting out of the car.
  8. Colorado Springs Police wait an hour to dispatch officers to hostage situation. Wife finds husband dead before police arrive
  9. That shot by Alcaraz, my God...
  10. Our little guy celebrated his 1st birthday with a temperature of 103 and an inability to hold down solids. His belated celebration was getting a bunch of vaccines after recovering. Maybe that's why he can't stand being held, nor put down for even a moment this week. So that's been fun. Also, he has decided to save popping out any teeth until his 2nd year of life.
  11. I'm glad you guys are here to provide up-to-date information. God forbid American news cover anything going on outside of our borders. JFC..
  12. Is Rune going to turn this into a real match? Would love to see it go 5
  13. I watched a good amount of that match. Good players, but damn that set with the horrible call, where the umpire awarded Rune a point for "hindrance" that Cerundolo clearly won, was rough by both players. I do hope Rune fares better in his QF rematch against Ruud.
  14. Yea, that sucked. Donnie had a Mcnugget happy meal at the park before it was time to go. I was going to have the fries myself, but he had other ideas. To lift the thread up again, here's Mango trying to catch a fly.
  15. Well, it's time to say goodbye to Donnie this afternoon. He has lived a solid 13+ years since my wife picked him up from the pound before we had met. He's been with her in 13 homes, through nursing and grad school, our engagement, marriage and birth of our son. Basically, the one constant of our relationship. The doberman (and more recently, baby) stole a lot of the attention away from him, but up until the last year when his health problems started to creep up, he was the easiest dog ever. It's so hard to know when the time is right, but every time one problem improves, another seems to pop up. He's lived a full, and hopefully happy life. Farewell, sweet boy...
  16. Prehistoric planet season 2 is great, as expected. I'd have a hard time not liking something David Attenborough was attached to. Sometimes it's easier to watch a nature documentary about things that have been dead for millions of years, rather than creatures we are actively driving to extinction.
  17. I'm not positive if ranchers or drillers are the bigger issue in this particular case. Pretty much all the grouse-like species of the central and western grasslands are completely boned if conservation measures aren't substantially stepped up.
  18. A yellow-green vireo showed up near Lake Somerville. These turn up in the valley perhaps annually in very small numbers, but are scarce elsewhere in the United States. The baby and I successfully chased it this morning. It was the best kind of chase, with another person already there and on the bird so I didn't have to do any of the hard work. Didn't even try for a photo this time, but this is what it looks like. Quite similar to our locally breeding red-eyed vireo In shitty bird news, congress is working to delist the lesser prairie chicken from the ESA just 6 months after it was added. It's ONLY lost 97% of its population in the last 60 years, so obviously this decision is based on firmly established science 😠
  19. Mango a giant fucking pain in my ass, and we have to be careful because of her sheer size and hyperactivity, but this dobie at least is great with the little one.
  20. My photo setup is pretty legit, so that's how I get all these sweet shots. Tie a large dog around my waist, push a generally impatient and uninterested baby in a stroller, then attempt to hold my phone up to my bins, producing a photo suggestive of something that could be a bird.
  21. We just bought a house in WilCo and have a one year-old. Wife loves her job and signed a retention bonus. If things keep heading this way though (lol, as if there is an alternative in this state), I'd love to start looking to move elsewhere by the time he gets school-aged. As mentioned above, where the fuck do you go?
  22. Gotta laugh, otherwise I'd cry
