  1. My parents are sadly Fox News viewers, like so many others here. I was pretty apolitical until sophomore/junior year of school, around the '08 election. But even then, while I was still pretty apathetic, I remember visiting home and a fox news talking head, I believe O'Reilly, was discussing the implications of Katy perry's "I kissed a girl" song. It was the dumbest fucking thing I've ever seen on the news, up to that point anyway. My parents know better than to keep it on when I visit now, but spending time in doctors lounges here in Texas (not a dr, btw), I get a few minutes of the right-wing talking points every day. What a horrible, dangerous, unfunny joke that network is.
  2. Dropped on Netflix today. Attenborough has been my hero since blue planet came out nearly 20 years ago. It is amazing that he is still the voice of conservationism at 90+ years-old. It's also amazing how much we have managed to fuck nature up in a couple hundred years, which is undeniable even if you manage to deny climate change. What remains is still so incredible though, and the camera work in just the first episode is amazing.
  3. Anybody been to Lassen Volcanic NP? I'm considering a long weekend trip to visit my brother in Sacramento and possibly making the 3-hour drive up there for 3 days/2 nights of camping in late June. I would love to try a relatively tame backpacking route, as I bought a pack and jet boil a couple summers ago. Unfortunately, my previous backpacking plans always seem to hit a snag so they sadly remain essentially unused. I have a good amount of experience camping, including some primitive hike-ins, but no multi-night trips in wilderness. I know established campgrounds fill up early in Cali and I won't know until pretty last minute if I'll be able to make it so I don't want to make any reservations. I also like the idea of a relatively uncrowded park, so Lassen seemed like a good choice. Thoughts or recs on specific trails in the park or elsewhere within 3 hours of Sacramento would be great.
  4. I'm a total amateur and since I moved and changed jobs last summer, I've been horrible about managing my tank. I somehow got all the fish from Houston to Fort Worth alive during the move, even with an overnight stay at my parents. My power filter recently bit the dust, so I had no choice but to get my shit together somewhat. Probably the best the tank has looked since the move. The biggest struggle is getting the wife to shut the blinds in the guest bedroom so the tank isn't completely green after a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, I've got another move coming up at the end of the summer and I don't know how I feel about trying to transport this thing to Santa Fe. I'm holding onto it for now, but If any DFW folks are interested, I may give it up pretty cheap in the next few months. It's a pretty basic 37 gallon tank with stand and I've replaced the light hood and in addition to the power filter in the last year. The tank started put as a Tanganyikan cichlids tank. Current occupants are orange leleupi, brichardi, Boesemans rainbow, a pair of I think dwarf rainbows and a couple syndontis.
  5. I was going to ask this. Do yall root for other Texas teams in post-season games? The tournament seems different to me for some reason compared to other sports. If I dont have a dog in the fight bracket-wise, I feel like I root for Texas teams (aggy and rape U excluded) in the tournament, but not necessarily in other sports, and I don't give a shit about other big12 teams.
  6. Just listening to this. As DOTUS would say, "great reputation!". What a piece of shit
  7. NCAA football on ps2 in the dorms freshman year. We really hit our stride though junior and senior years, alternating Mario kart 64 and mortal kombat vs dc universe. There are very few things I have ever been better at than Mario kart battle with bowser from '08-10.
  8. First time in 8 years that our old husky-lab got to finally play in the snow again. It took him about 0.5 seconds to turn back into a puppy.
  9. I meant to catch this in theaters but never did. Tuning in tonight. I'm not even a climber, but I could watch climbing documentaries constantly. Thanks for the heads up
  10. I can't believe it took 55 posts for someone to post the correct list. The chocolate:PB ratio is what makes the candy. The minis suck compared to the perfect Easter/Christmas versions, but are still superior to most other candies. Following reese's entire catalogue... 2) Twix 3) Sour patch kids 4) Peanut m&m's 5) Snickers
  11. I don't have time for an overnight trip at the moment, but I want to take a day trip up to Wichita Mountains NWR. I'm about a 3-hour drive away in FW, so I should be able to wake up early and have 6-8 hours to hike. I'd be most interested in wildlife and elevation change since I don't get much of that down here. Any recs for a good trail that meets that description?
  12. The Field Museum of Natural History is pretty cool. Second City improv was hilarious as well. Not so much for kids. I'm more of an outdoors/hiking vacationer in general, but Chicago in the summer is awesome and I will definitely go back again.
  13. Looks like it is playing this weekend in FW. I'm definitely going to have to check it out. Is 3D worth the extra few bucks?
  14. Yep, it was River Legacy. They were only a couple hundred yards from the bobcat info sign, actually. The picture was tough to screw up too much. He couldn't have been more than 10 feet from me when he crossed the trail. I've seen one at Northwest Community Park in Blue Mound a couple times as well. It's always a pleasant surprise when they show up though.
  15. Vermillion flycatcher, nice! In keeping with the local wildlife theme, I just took this horrible cell phone photo of a bobcat in Arlington.
  16. I just about walked into this guy at River Legacy Park in Arlington a couple hours ago. He had a buddy with him too. He was no more than 10 feet away from me when he crossed the bike trail, zero fucks given about my presence.
  17. I spend most weekends wandering around urban wilderness. I really need to invest in at least a decent point-and-shoot. Any recs for a beginners camera for birds and other wildlife?
  18. Bump. Looks like the wife's schooling is going to be taking us out to Santa Fe for at least 18 months, come August. We're going to check out the city over a long weekend over spring break. Would it be worth doing a day of skiing? I have no idea what Ski SF is like, but I've only ever skied twice so I'm not too picky. I can't wait to spend all summer hiking and all winter skiing for a couple years.
  19. I believe Primo's is the Italian restaurant I went to last year. It was pretty good from what I recall. I was also drunk. AleWorX was a good place for beer.
  20. Obviously it wasn't an emergency back then. Do you even caravan 2.0, bro? Never mind that would mean illegal immigration only worsened the last two years under Republican leadership, following 8 years of THE MOST DIVISIVE PRESIDENT EVAR!!!1!!
  21. I was alerted to the Bru news by a post in the cloak room, immediately came over here to the happening bunker and spent all day catching up, and eventually found out the shutdown was over due to a post here in the recruiting thread. My shit is all backwards but this was the best Surly binge since at least "ok cool. Hook em"
  22. The wife and I did a roadtrip through Oregon a couple years ago, I think the last week of April. Drove east from Portland and camped along the Columbia River a couple nights. We did an awesome hike from Eagle Creek Trailhead with something like 6 waterfalls. Unfortunately some shithead teens shot off fireworks around there and burned the forest down. Then we drove down to Bend, which I highly recommend if you like beer. Excellent breweries and not terribly far from Crater Lake. As far as it being worth it, that time of year you will likely only have access to the area by the lodge, with most of the road around the lake closed due to snow. We went anyway and it was still an incredible sight. We drove for the coast after that and camped near Yachats, which is pretty small and didn't have a ton going on. Still, the drive up the coast is gorgeous and definitely recommend Cannon Beach. Tunnel Falls, Crater Lake, Yaquina Head Lighthouse
  23. MAGA dipshits have to be the most entitled little cunts ever. I have never hated a group of people so much.
  24. Well considering the buzzfeed report was released, what, 24 hours ago? When else would Mueller's response be made? Tuesday morning, 4 days later?
  25. Marco Rubio definitely thinks it is time to consider exploring the possibility of potentially being concerned about something Trump might do.
