Coming to this late as is my wont to do.
My dad taught me how to shoot as a kid. I’ve never cared to hunt, was not my thing and I don’t like deer meat anyway.
I’m a big dude so I don’t feel like I need a gun to feel safe, but my philosophy has always been toward de escalation.
I bought a shotgun at my wife’s request at the start of covid and it stayed in its wrapping until I gave it as a gift to a friend who is a serious gun collector when I moved from Texas.
The statistics around guns in homes with kids are scary and should give people pause. Everyone thinks they are the responsible gun owner, but my experience around gun owners has been pretty mixed. The guy I gave the shotgun to is one of the most trustworthy people I’ve ever known and I have no doubt if all gun owners were like John we’d have nothing to fear. But they aren’t. A lot of them are shitty people, but unlike shitty people without guns, they can do a lot of harm.
Long story short it doesn’t matter, there are so many guns out there you just assume whoever you’re dealing with is strapped.
