  1. Yeah they’re going to have herd immunity and if it costs them 1 percent of their population that’s fine now because their economy is shitting itself. The supply chain issues are getting worse and long term the one thing China can’t afford is to lose a large chunk of its manufacturing, which is coming.
  2. Carmel by the Sea during King tides.
  3. Oops instead of day drinking I’m posting sober. That may have been poor judgment.
  4. Yeah I’m technically working but I literally haven’t gotten a thing done today, so I wanted to wish each and every one of you motherfuckers a safe and happy Christmas. This place is incredible in its breadth of knowledge (see Ukraine War, the Oil and Gas threads, car threads, and even the food forum) plus its extra helping of degeneracy. I am glad I joined all those many years ago and regret nothing. See you degenerates after the holidays.
  5. I always wonder how stupid can people be, then it turns out the answer is way stupider than you thought possible.
  6. Holy shit the Hindenburg is looking on in horror at the sheer scope of this disaster.
  7. We’re getting fucked, and not in the good way. Of course I dump money into the market just ahead of it taking a steaming shit on my chest. Thanks for playing.
  8. Right offs? Hehe that’s good.
  9. The crazy thing is I just bought a cd ladder for 12 months with minimal spread. Just about every maturity at 4.6. That is bizarre, and making me even more curious about where the market goes.
  10. Not in the business forum but wow this stock (TSLA) has tanked. At around 130 per share now and probably headed to the mid 80s based on a fair value model. What does that do to Elmo’s cash flow servicing debt on his toy?
  11. A little different but Snow, by John Banville, is pretty good. He’s quite a writer and does different genres well. His Kim Philby book (can’t remember the name now) got me started on his books. The Untouchable. That’s the one with Blunt and Philby.
  12. Tesla was a California success story until recently. The rift really came at the start of covid and until then there was an undeniable “it” factor to the company. It’s irreparably damaged by its association with Elmo. He will be pushed out eventually due to his poor judgment and the other economic headwinds such as the CAFE credits. I just hope he doesn’t buttfuck the Austin economic environment in the process. A lot of ripples caused by his moves in central Texas.
  13. I didn’t think it was that sad. It was a reminder that they aren’t playing around. The plot twist with the cicada was the only lame reveal. Oldman is fantastic, and the rest of the cast outside of River is great too. That actor doesn’t quite pull his part off.
  14. 1970. But this one is wild.
  15. I’m ready. In case anyone was wondering, fuck Argentina.
  16. You got this. Posting on surly is a guaranteed cure.
  17. How much longer do we give Twitter? I think writing is on the wall at this point and once these banned accounts move on there won’t be the breaking news aspect to draw people in. I always thought the one advantage TWTR had was immediacy. If it loses journalists that will quickly change.
  18. The market is falling like Bohica.
  19. This whole thread has aged incredibly well. Vintage milk.
  20. I am about 20 percent fixed to 80 percent equity overall. I agree, sort of, on international stock but in addition to not being as ruthless with capital there are some real black swan concerns with things like Aramco or Petrobras just to name a couple of examples. And fuck anything Chinese with a 10 foot pole. Naoch. Both tacos.
  21. Ok I’m very interested in this and won’t derail with unserious play money diversions. I keep my money assigned into three piles: the first is a two to three year cash reserve that will pay for bills, house, emergencies, etc. I keep this in income producing funds (50 percent) that don’t fluctuate much, like Fidelity’s tax free bond funds, and the other half in a combination of CDs (which kind of sucks right now) and in a premium money market account. The second pile is investment (IRA, 401k) and is about half my net worth. This is spread into a Pimco bond fund (expenses are high but yields terrific), Putnam large cap value, a couple of index funds, and a Blackrock balanced fund that I’ve been underweighting due to their ESG direction (no CR for my investments please). I would call this a growth allocation but not too aggressive and minimal international exposure. The third pile is wildly speculative and is where I’ll buy international stock and other silly ideas. By doing this I can stay disciplined on real money. What I am most interested in is not complex stock market trading but finding return without a) leverage and b) too many unknowns. I avoid individual stocks I don’t understand. The only one I ever made real money on was a utility company that was a client, that eventually got bought out by private equity. Wish I had put more in but that’s how it goes.
  22. My vizsla is totally comfortable being a lap dog. No one else thinks it’s funny though.
  23. 95 percent when it was at a couple of bucks? Or at 30 plus? Just checking… because I am pretty sure I’ve bought at both those prices. That is the sign of a disciplined stonker.
  24. I voted speaker because this simulation is so dumb it’ll happen.
  25. I am not getting sucked in! Wait yes I am.
