No doubt Google is the worst offender. Apple is bad as well but nowhere close to Google. Not rooting for anything other than I'd like to see consumers continue to push back on privacy related issues. I despise FB and Insta and WhatsApp and TikTok and Twitter and.... I agree with Charlie Strong when it comes to social media. Unfortunately, if 95% of people don't care and use it, then it becomes a necessary evil, in some cases, because that is the only way to interact with particular groups. Surly is my primary social media.
Asking because you had good takes on the old site and seemed to be tapped in to FB's positioning as it related to marketing and growth opportunities. One of the biggest reasons for that was being able to offer very targeted advertising based on the data they collected. Considering a large majority of people interact with FB through their phone, this could have a significant impact on their ability to sell this data at a premium since it likely won't be as accurate and targeted. It will also be interesting to see if Google tries to do something similar in Android since they are after the same data. Will be tough for Google raise privacy concerns for an app without raising the same issues about their own tracking and sharing of data. The difference being the tracking is baked into the OS and Google seems to be considered more "trustworthy" than FB even though they really aren't.
And yes, it feels dirty posting in CR, but unfortunately that's where the thread is even though its not particularly political. I was shocked that given the choice 96% of people opted out. I would have guessed under 50%.
