All time Lakers team vs All time all NBA team
Derka replied to Im_smarter_then_you's topic in Basketball
which, btw, means that my full roster (lets limit it to 10 deep) is not going to feature the 10 best players i can think of, but rather my best five man lineup + supplementary players. so for example i might go: starters: steph, MJ, Bird, KD, Jokic bench: ray allen, dennis rodman, KG, kawhi, hakeem -

double edit: i’m tripping, this is 5 v 5 with bench players, so throw my rules out. ideally it would still be played “street ball” style in the sense that there would be no referees, no FTs, players call their own fouls, etc. o worries about hand checking or illegal defense, just two teams going at it for, let’s say, four 10 minute quarters. -

street ball. play to 11 by 1’s and 2’s. players call fouls, no FTs, win by two. -

i actually started off with oscar as my PG and then changed it to steph. i figured that jokic and bird have PG type vision and passing as well and that steph’s GOAT shooting ability, work rate, and floor spacing would give him a slight nod over oscar. but with that said, im not going to argue with anyone who wants to replace steph with oscar. The Big O gives that team even more size and passing ability. they would be a nightmare matchup either way. -
there’s been some discussion lately in other threads about me “pining for texas to hire rick barnes” or how im “obsessed”, or “pretending to be a vols fan now”, so i just decided to address those posts here, in the pertinent thread. none of this is new, it’s all just a reminder: i did not/do not personally know rick barnes very well. i’ve had a limited number of conversations with the man. i was in 7th grade when he was hired, and i was still around the program at that time, and i met him at his first ever Texas practice, where i spent the day playing 1-on-1 against his on nick, who is my same age. barnes took over for tom penders, a man i’d known my entire life. one night when i was like 10 years old i got out the family address book and called up coach penders and told him that i thought he should change his starting lineup. that was my relationship with the Texas HC for as long as i could remember, and for 13 year old me, rick barnes was just the new guy in that spot, and i was excited to meet him and to get to know him and his team. so, barnes takes over, we win the league his first year, and we spend the next decade as one of the 10 best programs in college basketball. rick barnes has taken the thing that i love the most and brought it to greater heights than i’d ever imagined. the guy is hugely responsible for so, so much happiness and fulfillment in my young life. i really do cut for the guy, no doubt. then things go downhill. and when things go downhill, the torches and pitchforks come out, and i’m here on these boards every day taking exception to the way that people are talking about and treating rick barnes. i get labeled a barnes apologist/sycophant, and this only serves to dig me further in to my position of supporting barnes and disavowing any and all personal shit talk and ill will towards him. i already really really liked him, but i had been radicalized at this point. now, he gets fired in a horse shit move by the feckless steve patterson who didn’t have the balls to just go ahead and fire barnes, instead hoping barnes would fire all of his closest friends himself in order to save his job. so that was bullshit too. but here’s what you’ve really got to remember: i had, and still have, many close relationships with several former players and coaches who were here under rick barnes. so when he got fired, so did my friends; so did my mentor. on top of that my mentor’s wife was a teacher at my school at the time and i was very close with her and their children as well. these people’s lives were uprooted when this happened, on top of which is the fact that all of these people who i am friends with genuinely love rick barnes themselves. like actual, real life love. all the while his name is getting dragged left and right on these boards, and im being attacked for defending him. it was personal to me. it affected the lives of lots of people who i really really care about, people who themselves are extremely close with rick and his family. it was a hard time. so now, with all of that said, all i have left to say is this: if you really still think im just some rick barnes fanboy who is “obsessed” with our former coach, simply because i still root for him and wish him success, then i just don’t know what to tell you other than it says a lot about your maturity level and understanding of the situation. i am not infatuated with some random former coach, i simply, and unabashedly still support our former coach, a guy who has meant a lot to me without me personally knowing him particularly well, as well as a guy who is very important to lots of people who are very important to me. this is basic human shit here. if you still don’t get it, you probably never will.

UT's next basketball coach - discussion/debate [Sean Miller Hired]
Derka replied to alphahorn's topic in Basketball
i keep going to twitter and seeing indiana fans clamoring for shaka, with marquette fans then responding with “never in a million years, he’s ours!!!” responses. the pied piper wishes he had pull like shaka smart. the guy has won three tourney games in the last 12 years and all he’s done is go from VCU to Texas to Marquette to being wanted by fans for the IU job. that dude is the charlatan of all charlatans. it’s amazing. -

i’ve played this before, but oats was interviews last year and asked about his offense which many think is the best in the nation. he said, “the best shots in basketball are a catch-and-shoot three, a dunk or a layup, and a FT. so thats what we do.” i already liked home before that, but i fell in love with him when i heard him say that. and you think about the offense we’ve been putting out at Texas. off the top of my head, i don’t think we’ve had an offense that i truly enjoyed watching on a regular basis since 2011. that’s almost 15 years wandering the offensive desert. after all of the maddeningly inconsistent, low-iq offense we’ve had in recent years, seeing a nate oats product on the floor would be no less than the fans (and the moody center, and cdc) deserve. -

Texas is a better, prettier, richer version of alabama, and Austin >>> Tuscaloosa. i’ve never let myself for even one moment think that we will be able to land oats, but in theory it’s at least conceivable, especially given cdc’s track record. when we recruit a HC to take over one of these premier positions at UT, you gotta know that when Texas comes knocking, it’s a different knock. when CDC gets these guys on campus, shows them the facilities, introduces them to all of the other top flight, championship winning coaches, surrounds them with trophy room after trophy room, takes them around town to eat and chat, etc- it’s tempting for anyone, even the mark fews and nate oats of the world. Texas is the pinnacle of college athletics. it does not get any better than this university, this directors cup winning athletics program, and this city. -

well he’s done a lot more to prove himself since then. it wasn’t just that he only had experience at UNT (although that was a big issue), there were also issues like the fact that he played at the slowest tempo in america, and that he hadn’t proven that he could recruit well or do well in the portal at a big time school. now at tech he’s beaten us out for toppin, (a better player than any of our transfers) he’s not playing as slowly as he was at UNT, he’s got wins over houston, arizona, baylor, byu, etc, and he currently has the no.9 offense and no.38 defense in america. Texas hires that guy *after* he’s proven he can do all of that, not before. -
The Challenge: All Stars 5. Wednesdays at 7pm on MTV

they won’t do it, but i wish they’d either switch to an individual game or switch up the teams at some point. i might not like or root for them, but people like frank, ashley, and katie have *zero* chance to win this challenge. none. they weren’t given partners, they were given massive anchors. there needs to be certain physical requirements going forward in order to be on this show. nobody who gets winded waking up one flight of stairs should be allowed to “compete” on this show. -

yeah i’m all-in on lloyd, i think a lot of us are. and he would be right in line with other cdc hires like Vic and Schloss in terms of him being a known quantity at this level and a great fit at this school and in this city. -

he did not conduct a coaching search and come to the conclusion that rodney terry was the man for the job, he made a calculated decision (and it wasn’t him alone) to *retain* rodney terry after Texas made the elite 8 and all of our current and former players (not to mention a shit ton of cbb media types) were all clamoring for RT to get the job. the entire situation is an outlier. -
UT's next basketball coach - discussion/debate [Sean Miller Hired]
Derka replied to alphahorn's topic in Basketball
correct. we should rule him out because he’s been the HC at drake for three total months and therefore *does not meet the qualifications* of anyone whom cdc would consider. i’ve made this post before, but it’s as if people think that the basketball coach holds practice a few times a week, coaches his two games a week, and that’s that. well that’s not that. it’s so so so much more. the HC at the University off Texas is like a high paid ceo of a fortune 500 company, and it doesn’t really matter how awesome the guy in the mail room is, he’s not up for the ceo job should it become vacant. being the head men’s basketball coach at Texas is a 60-80 hr/week job (sometimes more) that involves recruiting (and all of the insanity that comes with it in the NIL era), working the transfer portal, fund raising, philanthropy, hiring and managing assistants and support staff, implementing a strength and conditioning program, managing fragile teenage egos and emotions, making sure everyone’s grades and attendance are on point, drumming up fan support and attendance, scheduling, keeping A LOT of shit in house that you don’t want going public…and so much more. a guy proving to be adept with x’s and o’s and winning at a level where they play in HS gyms where no one is watching does not mean he is ready or even capable of taking on the job of HC at the University of Texas. the parts of the job that the public is privy to make up only a fraction of what the job in its entirety entails. this is why ben mccollum is not a candidate for this job. this is why he will need multiple years as a HC at the D-1 level before programs much smaller than Texas will offer him the job at their school. i mean he hasn’t even shown he can recruit yet, as the majority of his current drake team came with him and has been playing together for years. for all the complaining here lately about chris beard and rick barnes being brought up, at least those guys actually coached here and are pertinent to these conversations. if there’s one guy we all should stop talking about it’s ben mccollum, because the guy is simply not qualified to even interview for this job. -
lol, dynamite example you’ve posted here. your own made up exchange that’s never actually been posted by me or anyone else. great stuff.
-
but this doesn’t happen. you guys being him up out of nowhere, not me. the only time i mention him outside of his dedicated thread is in context, in a manner that’s germane to the discussion, eg comparing and contrasting former and current UT coaches. it’s you guys who bring up him (and me) out of nowhere for no reason. you do it, and then you get upset at me about it. that’s the reality of it.

0-10 south carolina was down 13 in the 1H vs ole miss, just took the lead with about 6:00 left. -
0-10 south carolina at home: lost to no.1 (kenpom) auburn by 3 lost to no.4 florida by 1 lost by 5 in OT to no.31 miss state lost by 4 to no.12 texas a&m currently in a 3 point game vs no.20 ole miss they’re not going to go 0-fer conference play. even if we beat kentucky, if we turn around lose that game that will probably be the nail in RT’s coffin.

Derka replied to alphahorn's topic in Basketball
his name was jay wright. in all seriousness, let’s check out the recent champions: dan hurley- LOL, first team AA asshole bill self- i personally like him but he’s been a crazy cheater scott drew- HOF slimeball tony bennett- classy, but arguably the biggest tourney choker ever. did win it all though. jay wright- classy roy williams- not a choir boy, but he’s fine coach k- same as roy kevin ollie- oddly he’s lacking in the “good coach” portion of this equation rick pitino- unanimous HOF scuzzball selection coach cal- lolololol you can keep going back to find guys like jim calhoun and billy donovan, but it seems like the assholes and slimeballs are winning more than the classier guys. just wait until bruce pearl or kelvin sampson wins it this year.
