  1. you’re painting with a pretty broad brush here, and a lot of women’s hoops fans do this, which only turns people off even more. like anyone who doesn’t like the product on the floor is a misogynist at best, and quite possibly a far right wing neo nazi, all because they were critical of women’s hoops. look i’m pretty fucking liberal/progressive, and i support UT athletes in anything they do, but i watched the 1Q of that game and it was terrible. it was simply, factually, a slow, unaathletic, uncoordinated, under-the-rim version of a sport that i love. it was just bad, bad basketball. and it was two top five teams who again were a combined 50-3 coming into the game. there’s nothing political about it, and calling a spade a spade doesn’t make one a misogynist or some far right trumper loon. so just be careful when throwing that around, because again, it happens a lot, and it only serves to turn people off of the sport even more.
  2. carr was up and down. he didn’t shoot a consistent 37% on a nightly basis, he’d go 10 for 15 and 5 for 9 and then have nights where he shot 2 for 9, 0 for 7, or 1 for 6. he was a knock down shooter on his good nights, but he was equally poor on his bad nights as well. 10 for 15 is absurd though. all time great shooting performance.
  3. carr and rice both shot 37% from deep but neither was a knock down shooter. also, as a team we shot .347 from deep (156th nationally) on 20.8 3pa/gm (219th). it was by no means a great shooting team, or a team that relied on shooting. in fact, one of the most impressive things about that team by far was its individual and collective basketball iq. we tried to take practice reps and get good looks on offense as often as possible. just a very well coached and well drilled team full of senior, experienced players, as you mentioned. not the most naturally gifted team ever, but the whole team played with a high iq and high effort. i miss that.
  4. beard had us no.1 in kenpom in november of his second season, and that’s with a roster bereft of nba talent, no shooters, no size, and no athleticism. the team he built was so good that even after he was fired midsession for a domestic violence arrest, the squad still went to the elite 8 and probably should have gone to the Final Four, despite a clear and marked drop off in play after Beard’s departure. that happened here, not very long ago, and now that we’ve been shown that Texas can absolutely become a basketball powerhouse in relatively short order, that’s what we’re going after with our next coaching hire. the last time we did a real life coaching search, the guy we hired had us no.1 in kenpom and going deep in the tourney basically overnight. that’s the level now. that wasn’t dumb luck, that was a great hire who did his job very well. that’s we are aspiring to now. that’s the level.
  5. lol, that link does not show that women’s college basketball viewership is up 350%, it shows that the viewership on february 9th (when Texas played S Carolina and Tennessee played LSU) was up 350% from the viewership two weeks prior on january 26th when there was no such marquee matchup. the link you provided actually shows that people *aren’t* tuning in unless there’s a Texas vs S Carolina matchup on a sunday afternoon when everyone is sitting around waiting for the super bowl to start. you actually just refuted the point you were trying to make.
  6. making the sweet 16 is a very enjoyable thing for the team and the fans, but even if this team does make the S16, there’s really no excusing this:
  7. my iphone autocorrects its to it’s all of the time and it drives me crazy.
  8. first, averaging 9.6 and 7.5 is not “nearly averaging a double double”. mitchell did record eight double doubles last season which is nothing to sneeze at, but let’s not act like he was 2010 damion james. looking at his game logs for texas and his “best” double double saw him get 14 and 11 from the SF/PF spot. his three best games (all double doubles) were against delaware state, a&m cc, and houston christian. he recorded three double doubles in 18 games during conference play. you can try and rewrite who dillon mitchell was and act like he was some double double machine, but in reality he was a less athletic kai jones with none of the offensive acumen, less of a motor, and the jump shot of doj balbay. and if we keep him that means we don’t get kaluma, our best overall player. so, i’m gonna say no thanks to keeping mitchell over kaluma, as well as rewriting her history of who he was/is as a player.
  9. everyone here has a problem watching the men’s team.
  10. 1)the sport actually isn’t skyrocketing in popularity 2)the game(s) weren’t on abc because of demand, it’s there because espn/abc broadcasts the sport and has been pushing it very very hard for more than a decade now. also, i watched the 1Q of that lsu/texas game and the quality of play was just unwatchable. i’ve worked middle school parochial girls basketball tournaments for 25 years and that’s basically what i saw yesterday- countless missed bunnies, girls dribbling the ball off their feet, just general mayhem in the paint, the entire game being played below the rim, every rebound being grabbed 3 feet below the basket, and just honestly a jarring lack of skill and athleticism. 4/5 players were just impossibly slow, unathletic, and unskilled. the product on the court was so, so bad. hard to believe these were two top five teams with a combined record of 50-3.
  11. imagine how confused you would be if you saw this a few months ago lol.
  12. i did (well, started) one of espn’s mock drafts on the app, and randomly decided to give myself the 7th pick. it gets to my pick, and shohei ontani (average selection of 1.6) is not only sitting there, but he’s not even my auto pick if i time out. i closed to stupid app and will not be trying another mock on espn.
  13. give me at least six of: kai jones shaedon sharpe jericho sims amen thompson ausar thompson derrick jones jr ant ja castle jalen green jalen johnson no more matas buzelis and joe bench warmer in the contest.
  14. which is odd because Flau'jae Johnson was questionable this morning but is in the starting lineup after all.
  15. our women’s team is 9.5 point favorites today against no.5, 25-1 LSU.
  16. how many we got committed so far?
  17. yeah, this roster was definitely assembled with offense in mind, and the hiring of frank haith would seem to support the idea that the identity of this team is supposed to lie on the offensive side of the ball. but as either ravich or dykes pointed out last night, Texas is 13th nationally in iso possessions in offense. we don’t run a ton of set plays, we just employ concepts and trust our players to do their thing and make it happen. it’s not actually a terrible MO on its face, but where it becomes a problem is when there’s no accountability for low iq play and bad shots, especially when these things are happening repeatedly. we could basically run the same offense we’ve been running all year, and if our HC was even 20% more demanding that we look for and take good shots then i’d imagine we’d be at 6 or 7 conference wins right now not on the bubble.
  18. this is the game. as far as i can tell this is a de facto play-in game. if we win this next game then we should get to 7, possibly 8 league wins plus a chance to win another in the league tourney. if we lose this game to an 0-11 south carolina and go to 16-11 (5-9), followed by a road game in fayatteville (likely ending with us 16-12 (5-10)), then we are trending downward in a way that will be incredibly tough to recover from. 2-3 league tourney wins minimum needed at that point.
  19. oh most definitely. terrible shot selection is a hallmark of this team. i just felt that pope’s was especially abysmal last night. it’s a must-win home game, he’s been invisible for the first 2/3 of the game, and now he’s just going to start jacking terrible, off the dribble, pull up, and/or fade away threes with 23 seconds left on the shot clock. that’s the kind of shit that gets you benched when your HC actually holds his shooters accountable.
  20. i still cannot wrap my head around how a team in this conference, with an offense this bad, can be 20-5.
