a story that’s unique to rick barnes…and 98% of other cbb coaches. not sure if you’ve noticed, but getting to the second weekend is hard, while winning the whole thing is a pipe dream for most.
btw, i’ll never forget walking into Allen Fieldhouse three years ago and seeing FOUR- count em, FOUR total national title banners (they would win their 5th that year). a bona fide blue blood with now five total titles since the tourney started in 1941, despite regularly being a top seed with the best players and coaches in the sport. i don’t know when or how failing to win a national title became this huge black mark on a HC’s resume, but as far as annual championships go it’s the hardest one to win in all of sports. rick barnes is on the short list of best active coaches to never win one, with the likes of mark few, bruce pearl, and kelvin sampson. Texas fans are the last ones to be in a position to trash a coach who is in that echelon and who regularly goes to the second weekend when we’ve been there once since 2008.
