And honestly - I think a line has to be drawn between players from the 80s/90s who I hated (Laimbeer, Rodman, Malone, Stockton, Sheed, Fisher, etc) and Draymond Green.  He is more arrogant and loudmouthed than most of those guys and he's got the same problem as Laimbeer and Ndamakong Suh with regard to trying to cheapshot people during games.   It's almost laughable - every time he falls down for a loose ball, he's tangled up in someones arm, or his foot is up in the air flailing toward their face.   He's a fucking disgrace to sports and I can only hope one day his mouth writes a check his ass can't cash.

The problem is that the only remaining disposable cheap-shot artist in the league is a teammate.

(Thought that didnt stop him to taking out KD that one time)

This is the topic that always comes in our age group among those with the means to retire early. There would be a lot more people retiring early if it wasn't for healthcare cost/fears.

I was at a 1st birthday party a while back and most of what has been discussed in this thread was thrown about among a group with a 40+ year spread in ages.  Retirees with guaranteed pensions were very happy to have them but were jealous of the freedom the subsequent generations have from their retirement being in IRAs, 401/403, etc. with no need to hit X years with the same company.  A couple of retired execs said it never occurred to them, when being involved in the decision to moving their entities from pension plans to contributions/matching contributions, that all company loyalty would be thrown out the door with that but they too were jealous of the freedom of your retirement contributions go with you.

Problem is those with the self-elected retirement schemes don't often save sufficiently.

    Social responsibilities and whatnot....

your math appears to be right.

    post conference finals standings:

    1. rex wilson - 195
    2. hornonthebayou - 190
    3. derka/immortal/bigorange - 165
    4. derka's friend - 155
    5. joey covers - 120

so the 2 most active loudmouth basketball nerds can't win at their own game.  not even land 2nd place. have to fight over the bronze prize.

    that's gold!

Yeah I wouldn't expect there to be any price difference - if anything the opposite, since I may buy new what I otherwise might look for used (depending on what I was looking for).  But watches can be sentimental and I like the idea of picking one up on our honeymoon.  Thinking about it more I do pretty much want the Tudor GMT.  We'll see if that sticks for most of a year.  And if the marriage sticks for 10 maybe I'll get the Rolex.

Geoscientists and engineers. That's who you want to listen to on the subject of climate science, a subject beyond their field. Not the actual scientists engaged in the study of the climate.

yeah, dont bother listening to these geoscientists at UT who have geoscience degrees and working as geoscience professors at the school of geoscience

As far as the “polarized make it hard to see digital screens” I’ve never had that issue. Just look at your phone screen straight on like a normal person and you won’t have an issue.

It's almost like some apps work in landscape mode, and that there are more than 1 type of digital device out there...

The Munich/Alps may be harder for me to get to now (because American Airlines sucks) so I am leaning towards flying into London for 4 days and then flying over to Amsterdam and spending about 2-3 days there.  Is that enough time for each location to hit some of the best places to see?  My wife's family had a foreign exchange student 25 years ago that they kept in touch with all these years  that lives about a 30 minutes train ride north of London whose house we can stay at and then commute in each day saving some hotel money.  Will it suck riding the tube each day for 30 minutes back and forth or is it worth just paying for a hotel in downtown London? I believe end of July should be decent weather in both places.  Any other recs would be appreciated.

marriott is doing airbnb style rentals now, which *may* give you a fair rate to house a family

having local hosts is great, even if you dont stay with them. takes all the pressure away of building an itinerary, and they can sorta act as lynchpin of a schedule -- rather than you dragging the family around.  that is if they are committed to spending time with you, of course.

if you have those social credits, i would cash them in

I also have a pair ofMaui Jim’s. They are lighter and less sturdy than my daily Oakley’s so I only wear them on occasion. I broke them once and their customer service for the repair was terrific.

I was quite amused that the Maui Jim service department is in Peoria IL.

    They're headquartered there.

I scratched the fuck out of a pair of MJs.  Retail is 250 USD or so.  They offered to swap the lenses for 60EUR, shipped out of German office.  Even sent me back the old lenses, which was kinda nice.

    ***

Anyway, back to the glasses, its really ALL commoditized now.  Luxottica and Safilo owns most of the market.  Other "brands" license from them.  By no means do either of those firm run a crackpot engineering crew innovating plastic design or glass manufacturing.  It's basically a design-and-marketing operation.

  9. Just like with clothing, sturdiness and durability are NOT indicators of quality.

Most lenses are polycarbonate - good thing as they are lighter, and wont break into shards.

Unless some company has some ultra proprietary formula for the thermoplastic or the coating to make them more scratch resistant, then you can assume they're all pretty much the same.  And in fact, if a company  had such a thing, they would market the hell out of it.

As of today, I know of none that do.

I say there are 2.5 or 3 tiers of actual quality in sunglasses:

    (1) You have the throwaway shit tier, mass produced clones in China, sold at the gas station.  They feel flimsy, and the lenses are probably wavy and murky.

    (2) REI tier stuff with low brand equity... the 30-80$ stuff like Peppers, Tifosi, Polaroid, whatever...

    (3) Established brands.  The Oakley/Persol/Ray Ban/Maui Jim/etc.  As far as im concerned, the only real difference between #3 and #2 is.... brand equity.

And then there's the 500$ GucciGabanaTomFord Dallas Fashionista bullshit.  and I'll punch anybody in the face who even tries to argue that they are objective better from the others.

If you try really really hard, viewing back to back, maybe theres a slight bit of optical clarity improvement from #2 to #3.  But in most cases, with most samples, its pretty much the same.

SUMMARY:  As long as you're not paying <20$ or <50$ for it, you're not buying the shit tier stuff.  The only real perceivable difference is the styling.  In which case, buy what appeals to you.  Also, Polarized vs Non-Polarized is a choice.  Polarization cuts glare but messes up with some digital displays like navigation, smartphones, digital cameras, etc....

When I walk into an optometrist / glasses shop, i completely ignore the label and gravitate towards the style, then pick based on looks and comfort.  Ironically, im always looking at the exact same style (thick framed, brown, tortoise-shell frame with medium-dark lenses...).  So I end up with like 10 identical looking pairs.  Between the Persols, Mauis, RBs, Oakleys, Rodenstock, Carrera (bought yesterday), that i have....as far as perceived quality its all the same

  10. Arguing over resumes is for the fetishist. People will never change their opinion.  I don't like many of the things LeBron does/did....

What's indisputable is that after almost 1400 professional games completed....the man is playing lights out.  Comparisons be damned what he's doing now is utterly ridiculous
