I spent one month's commission check last december when I bought my fiancee's. /shaggysalesmafia
My girl is very low maintenance, not nearly as extravagant as my ex. She actually found a ring that she liked at Sam's club. I told her fuck that, I'm not buying an engagement ring the same place where I buy paper towels and dogfood.
Went to my local jeweler (for some reason, all the Alter family in Beaumont went to UT Law school. . .) and he cut me a pretty good deal on a double halo cut with good clarity. Now I need to buy a band to go with the engagement ring.
When I returned home from buying the ring, I logged in to Sam's website for shits and giggles and went to the engagement ring section and sorted highest price to lowest. . .who on Earth would spend $130K on a online ring purchase from Sams?
Maybe it's more instructive to explore the question 'why wouldnt someone spend 130K on an online ring from Sams?'

Curious how many of the type of people always talking about or waiting for retirement, also despise their day job?
Call me crazy, while i've got hobbies (and even more interests), for me going through the motions of all the tedium of life is life itself. I like the day to day stuff as it is today, be it going to the grocery store, doing a job workshop, tweaking my bike, getting a promotion, receiving a package in the mail... i dont want to swing it entirely one way or another

Also the laundry you use and whether you get starch has a big influence on shirt durability.
Good point, esp on the starch.
Wash with the collars flat (not folded), so the edge doesnt abrade.
I tell the woman to do it on low temperature, and then she hang-dries all our stuff
-
how often do yall rip yall shirts?
even so, unless intended use is (manual labor) workwear, its strange to judge qualities of clothing based on durability.
fine fabrics rip. the finer and thinner, the easier, in fact. so if its about longevity of clothing, i'd argue cheaper ones last longer than expensive ones.
sure for the same shirting type (weave and yarn count) maybe 1 brand will use a higher quality mill than another, but largely the differences come into the pattern matching, the construction of the collars, stitching, buttons, sizing/pattern, etc. that's what your money pays for

Had lunch todar with a old business associate who is 3 years retired.
He said year 1 was hell and he almost got divorced over the adjustment of spending so much more time with his wife.
I will probably try something like the office for coffe and paper mentioned above. Maybe use that as a few hours a day to focus on investments or something. I could definitely see myself falling into the 8AMhappy hour problem without some structure.
we had an old coot in the company whos like that. was officially retired, but came back to work as a contractor (bizdev), into his 70s.
then due to economic climate, we nixed the contract too, but he still literally strolls into the office today to have a coffee, chit-chat, and catch up on business issues.
has a hobby importing french wines. but i think he enjoyed getting away from the house, and the work was literally just flying around hob-nobbing with people

I don’t see Kathleen Kennedy surviving this.
all of the recent SW movies are bringing in better returns than the avengers franchise... legacy and story aside, isnt it blockbusters for the financiers/investors?

Lincoln seems to have had regard strength, and I think it would come down to him and Ford, who was the most elite modern-ish day athlete to have been president. I think Lincoln wins.
OTOH, Lincoln was taken down by a Deringer ...and you know what they say about Deringers...

Alps/Dolomites
*get away from the urban heatsink
*potentially cross 3 countries and 2/3/4 languages (a bit more exotic than hearing english abroad)
*kids can check out various castles along the way
*fit a bit of hiking in
*spectacular sights
*dont have to drag the family around the city...
fly into munich, rent a car, and have a drive around at your pace

Seems to me that there are two camps
if you’re really into Star Wars universe, watch the animated series, etc, you didn’t like this movie as much
if you like Star Wars growing up but don’t know shit beyond the movies, you thought this was a good entertaining movie.
i think it was a rubbish as a standalone movie, and im not a SW person. the SW connection was the thread that held it together (anticipating the first meeting with chewie; relating the kessel run; actually giving a damn about the rebellion; etc)

How old are you? A cash balance is more than just a savings account and typically benefits older employees/owners the most.33. How is it different? Seems to be cash deposited into an account that earns interest. Maybe I'm wrong.
might be similar to mine. my pension is defined-contribution, meaning i get out as annuity what i put in (rather than a formula e.g. based on best earning years).
the defined-contribution formula: x% of salary deducted, to gain y% as annuity benefit.
say, for 10% & 5% @ 100k salary, annually they take 10k so you build 5k of benefit. do that for 30 years and you build 5k*30 = 150k yearly payout until you die.
***
tied to that pension plan is an optional "additional voluntary contribution". you define the % and it is pretty much a pretax savings account, investable in all the typical 401k routes

That would be a long train ride, but yes Scotland is nice and weather is also agreeable.
For the Alps option, you could burn a day hiking. Another day or 2 visiting castles. Spend a day lounging by a lake. Ski resorts will have converted into summer activities such as Alpine coasters (Bergbahn). Or lift up and mountain bike down. The sport hotel and resorts will have tons of activities to partake in. You could also spend a day in Adriatic coast by visiting Trieste.
There's a wealth of things to do. Just rent yourself a roomy Skoda.
