Thanks! I probably should, since this summer we have a whole nother game for which to prepare our psyches. -

The 2005 game vs TX was outstandingly bad in that respect. A combo of overhype, overdrinking, and night games still being a novelty at the time. It has improved greatly since then but I don't blame you for your resentment. FWIW I had a similar experience as a visiting fan at Penn State just a few weeks after that game. No fun. Here I'll double down on my problem...I'm also an Eagles fan, inasmuch as I pay attention to the NFL. -

Thanks! Glad we got at least one of y'all 😉 That definitely has to be the minority stance around most of the country. Not that we've been winning titles hand over fist or anything, but as consistent as we are I imagine Ohio State fatigue set in for most people sometime around, oh, 1972. I guess it's a cross we must bear. And anyway, Freeman may have improved Notre Dame's likeability quotient, but it's still Notre Dame. I was raised to consider them Enemy #1B, so it's easy to revert to that for the next week. -

Hey all. Figured I'd give you the weekend before sending in my postmortem. Texas had a great gameplan and played exactly the way they needed to. They were one of the few teams in the field that could drop so much into coverage and still get pressure on Howard - your secondary is legit and they made this game close. In fact I think the two best defenses in CFB were on the field Friday night. IMO Ewers played an outstanding game, outside of his inability to escape pressure in the pocket. His little last-split-second flip to keep your 2nd scoring drive going likely would have been the play of the game had you pulled it out. I know you're ready for the Manning Moment, but Ewers and Sarkisian have brought you back to prominence and I'm thankful for that. On that note, I agree with the criticism of that late goal-line pitch play (we had just tried a similar thing earlier on 3rd and inches, and also failed) but overall Sark has done an unbelievable job of building the program and hopefully you all are enjoying the ride. He's done WAY better than I anticipated when he was hired. With his recruiting I expect you'll be playing on this stage on a regular basis going forward. -
Oh I remember that 2005 game vs USC. I had no affiliation w TX at the time (other than having lost to them earlier that year) but the whole CFB world was sick of that USC lovefest heading into the game. I did joyful laps around my living room after Young scored to win. I suppose it’s good evidence that tribal hatred is a major driving force for CFB fandom 🙂 You are right about Quinn - when he's on his game he’s the best QB in the CFP field. OSU needs to pressure him into mistakes or he’ll win the game for you. Playing against his old school has to be added motivation. My biggest worry is your DL against our OL. You come out blazing there and it will be a very tough game for us.

I feel like the “expert” consensus is not reflected in the majority of the OSU fan base. No idea what the team is thinking but hopefully they’re locked in. The last time we were so heavily favored in a championship setting was against Florida in 2006, and whoops on that one. But there we had a month to soak in our win in the “Game of the Century” and get fat, lazy, and complacent. Meanwhile, in 2014 we were +/- 7 pt underdogs to both Bama and Oregon, pretty much the position you’re in now, and we know how that went.

To help us all bide our time before our little football game tomorrow evening, I’ll put this film analysis here for your viewing enjoyment. I think this guy has some of the better breakdowns out there. It’s not obvious from the title, but he gets into some specifics of how OSU and Texas might match up schematically.
-
I think he’s probably 3rd behind Smith and Egbuka (who is highly underrated imo). Golden probably has a step up on Carnell Tate although I like Tate a lot and his ceiling is very high. At the moment I think Golden certainly starts over Inniss, who is solid but unspectacular - he reminds me of Austin Mack from a few years ago.

This is absolutely correct. The OL has clearly benefitted from a month of practice in this configuration since the M loss, and apparently some scheme changes to simplify their assignments have helped them out as well (although I’m no Xs+Os guy so I’ll leave that to others). But the depth is razor thin, a couple guys are inexperienced, and the best player (Jackson) is playing tackle instead of his natural spot at guard. Your DL can and must blow up the LOS - I think it’s likely the single-most important aspect of the game.
-
I think there’s an opportunity for you to hit a few big plays on the ground - Blue is a great back and when your OL clicks you’ll pop one. I’d be very surprised if you’re able to sustain multiple drives by grinding it out - outside of Oregon in round 1, none of the teams you mentioned really did so. For example Tenn got half of its rushing yardage (65 yards) on their last drive of the game with its starters vs our 3rd string. PSU’s RBs averaged 2.4/carry - it was Allar and Warren of all people who boosted their rushing stats, and their offense totaled 6 points and 270 yards. IMO your offense’s best chance is to establish an intermediate passing game to stress our LBs in coverage and pull them back from the LOS. Styles has a lot of physical talent but he’s often out of position; JTT is a superior DE but he will overpursue a few times on the read option or RPO. Then find the right circumstance to hit us deep over the top or with some misdirection in the run game. Oregon did this well in October and I think you’ll be moderately successful at it - Quinn is certainly capable. What will hurt you is the lack of a QB run game, so using Arch creatively (but sparingly) could boost you there.

The offense was actually decent against PSU - consistent and effective. Closed the game out with manball; Henderson averaged 5.5/carry and Judkins 6.8. What set us back and made the game close was turnovers - a pick 6 from Will to start the day and he also fumbled going into the endzone to kill another drive. 14 points directly on those two plays. This is the type of game I expect to see on Friday - good production but nowhere near the same explosiveness as against Tenn and Oregon. The turnovers are the thing - Howard (or anyone else) gives the ball away like that and I expect we lose.

No, it’s just the transitive property is worthless in CFB and you probably all know that. I wouldn’t bank on OSU beating TX just because ASU took you to double overtime, even though I think OSU is a lot better than ASU. The last time we lost a game like that to Michigan was almost 30 years ago…in the 1996 game a 4-loss M team cost OSU a national title with a win in Columbus by nearly the exact same score (13-9). OSU subsequently beat Jake Plummer’s ASU in the Rose Bowl costing THEM a national championship. This Michigan game was an outlier like our last two games have been, just in the opposite direction. It could simply be that our true identity is inconsistent.
-
I wouldn’t use OSU’s Michigan game as a barometer for anything - it is a season outlier more often than not. But generally you’re right…OSU fans are as shocked as everyone else about the last two games, since the team had never really looked like that all year, even in comfortable wins. Two games is not enough of a trend to bank on, so most assume we’ll come back down to earth somewhat now.
