If it’s just the license issue - meaning I can still access healthcare, and my existence isn’t criminalized then we may get our Mexican residency for security and for feeling like we did something and to get them while my IDs are in order. with Mexican residency we would still have Texas residency and would stay here while our kids finish school.
I don’t want to diminish the importance of the ID because it’s critical in so many ways BUT I’ve got an extreme head start with plenty of relationships including banking, insurance, mortgage, etc that will dampen the risk of discrimination, but even I have faced it in lending and insurance. So I’m not immune. I would have to be sure I keep banking relationships specifically that are loyal. Other than that I rarely use my ID as a 49-50 year old woman, no clubs no alcohol checks, so it could be less of an issue. Again though, it’s an automatic involuntary disclosure and those who are just getting started, are not deeply integrated into a community of allies, those who are tying to get momentum as trans person out in the wild, and those without resources are fucked.
I will still drive less at a minimum, I will think 3-4 steps ahead about whether my license will be disclosed, and prepare in the back ground. Kind of like right now, I go to sleep and wake up thinking about this shit. It’s unrelenting but if I stay on top of it we can probably navigate the ID issue alone.
the problem is if all of the bills pass then I have to start really thinking about it.
the other thing is migrating to a blue state or to another country is much easier with documents in order, and right now I’m good, so any changes need to be made while it’s easy. As of right this moment US passports are not being revoked so I have until that expiration or a change in policy to make my move. That’s why Mexican residency is something we will probably do soon.
I’ve been all over I get that but my professional relationships while they will allow nomadic work, I must maintain a presence here, and my teens are thriving and IYKYK - you cannot take that for granted. Add some post-divorce custody and residency requirements it’s not feasible to leave for 3-4 years.
I’m really coming around to Mexican residency while staying here is the best move. Then moving in 3-4 years to Mexico and traveling the world as a big fuck you to the radical hyenas.
