  1. The more things change, they more they stay the same. CHANGE.
  2. I'm undecided on a full marathon, but I have two half marathons queued up. One at the end of July in New Braunfels and (possibly) one in early October in Australia. If those go well, I'm eyeing the full Rock-and-Roll marathon in San Antonio. Since the Half Marathon in July is looking like it will be around 77 degrees at the start and will be mid-80's two hours later, I've been training in the heat of the day. For what it's worth, stuff I've learned about running in the heat: Focus on hydration. There are tables on the internet that estimate how much water you loose every mile at various temperatures. At 100 degrees, you loose about 8.5 oz of water per mile. I have to plan my routes out to know where I'll get water. Starting at mile 2, I plan on drinking 10 oz per mile. I carry a 20 oz water bottle, so I do a lot of runs that loop around a park that has a known water fountain. I noticed that the first warning sign, for me, when I'm getting dehydrated, is one of my knee start getting sore; I now watch for that. There really are no real-time thermometers available for exercise, but heart rate is a really good proxy for core temperature. Everybody has different limits, but dehydration leads to overheating which leads to a spike in heart rate; knowing that and watching your HR allows you to manage that. I don't know if it's just me, or applies to everyone, but I reach hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) faster when running in heat. The Internet suggests that typical adults running will use all their available blood sugar in about an hour, after that, your body has to start burning fat which is less efficient. The most common solution is gels. I like the GU brand and typically start them after about 45 minutes of running in the heat and then every 30 minutes after that. You need to take those with a bunch of water. Most running gels have electrolytes as well, which as someone upthread mentions, are essential as well. Training for a full marathon on a treadmill sounds more brutal to me that running in the heat.
  3. Best - True Detective, because time is a flat circle. Worst - Sahara. Close 2nd, all the crap romantic comedies he's done. {wedding planner, how to lose a guy, ghost of girfriend's past, etc}
  4. While I've never been a fan of Griner, I feel bad for her that, through no fault of her own, she became a pawn in a political game. I'm pretty sure Russia just sees her as potential leverage.
  5. So let me get this straight. Water is supposed to float over my house and then fall down and wash my car and wet my lawn? That would be amazing, but it really sounds almost to good to be true.
  6. I just googled cause of death and nothing is released yet, but his dad died of a heart attack at 48. That's brutally young. The good die young; unfortunately so do the the big guys. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10943345/Beloved-Ravens-star-Tony-Siragusa-dies-sleep-age-55.html
  7. Tell me they aren't intending to sell shirts and hats that just have the letters "THE" on them. That would be kind-a goofy. gogglegooglegoogle Holy Shitballs! It's not just bad, it's OSU-bad.
  8. It is nice for my overlords that their talking point can easily have interesting things like the down being down 14% in the past 6 months. No need to get nuanced when gas is heading over $5/gal.
  9. Remember that stupid shit where Special Counsel Mueller was going to have Trump in jail within 6 months of starting his investigation? It was 100% going to happen, it was just a matter of when they arrested Trump. Remember that? This is more of the same stupid shit.
  10. I see a lot of white kids in the images above.... Let's review what would happen to the Somali pirates.
  11. And the cupboard was bare when that great coach Charlie Strong took over, right? To quote Parcells, "You are what your record says you are”

  13. Sometime you don't know what you're capable of until you just do it. I've now worked out for 45 days in a row. Run, Crossfit, and Cycle. Not since I ran Track in College have I pushed this many days in a row. I've done marathons, half marathons, and a half ironman, over the past couple decades, but I always built-in rest days. I honestly expected to throw in the towel by the 2nd week and take a weekend off. The key, I'm sure, is that I'm making sure I get much more sleep that I have in the past. The Garmin watch makes it really convenient to track sleep. And to add to the fun, I've also cut my calories over the same period to about 1,000 a day. That's actually been harder than the workouts. Everyone around me (and a lot of sites on the internet) keep telling me that losing 30 lbs in 45 days isn't healthy, and I should lose 1-2 lbs a week instead. Screw that, I'm tired of looking at a fat guy in the mirror. I'm sure part of that 30 lbs is muscle, but for at least another 10 pounds, I don't care. 59 days until the Stars and Stripes Half Marathon July 23rd in New Braunfels. Hopefully I make it to the starting line and not be "that fat guy".
  14. It's pretty bad-ass to know your mayor could beat the shit out of the mayor of every other city on earth. Glory to Ukraine.
  15. This is a Grade A Ass Kicking the likes of which I haven't seen in the playoffs for a very long time.
  16. WHAT THE Fuck is a Yekaterinburg? 4th largest city in Russia? Really? Surprising how few of the 10 Top Russian cities I've heard of. 17. While China is not going away, the Chinese government may face some serious turmoil in the next 10 years. Xi Jinping changed the rules and made himself president for life. I good gig if you can get it, but Winnie the Pooh's doppelganger is 68 now, in 10 years he'll be past the life expectancy in China. I assume the "10 year" prediction is expecting a nasty fight over a power vacuum. Not a certainty, but not unrealistic either.
  18. I suck as an investor, but I got lucky. As part of a buy-a-new-house-before-selling-old-house real estate transaction, I pulled a lot of money out of the market last August. It was January by the time the dust settled and I had the money back in my trading account. By then, things were starting to slide so I stayed out. I've been out of the market for almost nine months and sitting on the sideline waiting to hop back in for four and a half months and it's making me nervous, but I have no F-ing idea where to invest right now. The investing websites are all over the map from Gold to REITs to just put it in the S&P 500 and wait a long time. Sigh. First world problem.
  19. There was website posted here a few days ago saying the Crimean Bridge was going to be destroyed on May 9th. Sadly, it looks like that didn't happen, but I'm pretty sure it will when the time is right. It doesn't take a military genius to see the danger to the Russians position if the Ukraine forces, with all the new heavy equipment they are getting, can drive the 50 miles to Mariupol and and cut the overland route to Crimea. If that happened, everything in southern Ukraine (including Crimea) has to be resupplied by sea or that bridge. I'm pretty sure knocking the bridge out would then be a priority. It'll be awesome when it happens.
  20. A couple years ago I read a synopsis of a book by a pro-wrestler that talked about life after the limelight when they retired. I've been trying to find that book but I'm coming up blank. I'm hoping someone knows the book or can recommend something similar about coping when you walk away from fans.
  21. Holy crap, it's not even real water? I'd only seen renderings like the one below. I assumed it was going to be real water and that maybe they were going to sell access to the boats as some type of luxury box.
  22. I don't read Japanese, but I sharpened the image a bit and asked Google Lens to translate Google Lens says: Sada Ji
  23. Covid and age have not been kind to me for the last 2 years, but it's time to get this show back in gear. A Half Marathon is the sweet spot for me. 10K just seems so ordinary and a Full Marathon is too brutal to do another. I started running a month ago, and I've found that (probably due to age) I'm weaker across the board than I have ever been. I need to try something new. The target: Stars and Stripes Half Marathon July 23rd in New Braunfels The plan: Runs on Tuesday, Thursday and a long run on Sunday Crossfit on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday Cycling on Saturday Some people rip on Crossfit, but it seems to be exactly what I need. As an added motivation to get myself back in shape, there is a massive (40,000 runner) Marathon/Half/10K/5K event in Melbourne Australia that lines up with a trip I may be taking in October. 40,500 runners total across all distances and 12,000 in just the Half. I need to make that trip and race happen. But first is the S&S Half in July.
