Markets still falling like whoa
0xdeadbeef replied to Llano Estacado's topic in Business and Markets
I'm just going to take my pile of cash and sit over in the corner for a few months. I see two factors in play. First the fear/panic over the coronavirus in our everyday lives is going to put downward pressure on the market. I don't know how long it will take, but we should adjust to that. Then, quarterly results are going to start coming in, and it's going to be bad across the board. Tech companies, Hotels, Airlines, Oil companies, shipping companies, you name it. Numbers are going to be bad. Seems like there could be a rebound from the fear/panic part before results start getting announced. There could be a nice peak in there for someone....but not me. I'll be in the corner. -

I've never traded extended-hours before, but I put an order in for the pre-market session. For some reason, its more unsettling than trading on the normal market. It feels like going to a liqueur store late at night on the bad side of town. I get the "I probably shouldn't be here" vibe. The Schwab warning section on it says everything short of "you shouldn't do this", including a warning that most people trading extended hours are professions. Furk. -

This is damn stressful. With the bad Virus news all weekend, I honestly don't see a path for the market to stay flat or climb over the next few months. I'm freaked out, I think many others are too. And for good reason. If you google something like "Can the coronavirus cause a recession", mid last week the results were of the nature "probably not, unless it gets much worse". Well it is getting worse, and the same google search tonight shows a lot more bleak answers. On Friday I was thinking I would get back in the market Monday morning and ride it back up a bit. After reading way too much stuff on the internet this weekend, I reversed and put SELL orders in for virtually everything I have, including my beloved blue-chip dividend stocks. My bottom line question for myself was "Do I think the market is going to be lower is 2-3 months time?" If I had answered "I'm not sure", I would stay in and ride it down and up. But coronavirus is a dark-ass storm coming and I think it's going to F things up for a while. If someone has a different view on things, I'd love to hear it. -

Most people would agree that long-term hold is a better, especially for people that have a job unrelated to the market. I can only spend so much time on this. BUT, the next 3 to 6 months may be unlike anything that has been seen in more than a hundred years. (Spanish-flu of 1918). Probably not in terms of #of deaths, but in terms of panic, fear, and societal & economic impact. How is the stock market going to handle this? It's probably not going (and staying) up much for a while. I have never been more certain that the market was going to crash than I was last week. It would have been a stupid for me to stay in the market and play the long-term game. I got out on Monday and got partially back in on Friday; I may go all the way back in first thing Monday morning. Even if the market tanks again after I get back in, by sitting out last week and avoiding the drop, I just just made a huge amount of money. If/when it _does_ get back to the levels of 2 weeks ago, I'm going to have a shitload more shares of everything. In a nutshell, I have no idea what the market is going to do this week, so I'm going to get in and hold, even though I think we are headed for something like a 6 month recession. But if everything lines up again for such a clear sizable crash, I'll step out again. -

I just put a good size chunk back in the market. Looking at Market news and watching the Market all morning seems like we may have hit the bottom. ... Then after I jumped back in, I went back to reading Virus news and I'm freaked the fuck out again and wish I hadn't got back in. 😞 I need to just close all my browser tabs and get back to work. I'm in, so I need to get back to my regularly scheduled make-good-choices-and-let-the-market-do-its-thing-over-the-long-run strategy. I'm to old for this volatile shit. -

I pulled out everything I own Monday EXCEPT a solid dividend paying stocks. That is still a good sized chunk of money. WTF was I thinking. Why didn't I pull everything out! F-Me! Now that everything is down by a huge amount, I CAN"T make myself get out now. Can't do it, even though I'm pretty sure the market is going to fall more. -
1. Many countries like UK are currently in containment phase. But likely at some point infection will start spreading via local transmission. At that point, top priority is to slow the spread, and what we do as individuals and communities will be critical. 2. Fortunately risk of serious illness is low, especially for children. But risk is higher for elderly and people with existing health conditions. Everything we can do to slow the spread will help protect people at higher risk, and less people overall will get infected. 3. There are practical things everyone can do to reduce the risk of getting infected. These need practice, so start doing them now. You may still get infected, but it is worth really trying to avoid infection, because the more we slow spread the better. Slow the spread, buy time. 4. Stop touching your face. Especially stop touching your eyes, nose or mouth. This is much much harder than it sounds, and takes practice. But if you start practising now, you will quickly get a lot better at it. 5. Wash your hands often. Wash with soap and water for 20 seconds, or rub hands with alcohol hand gel. Especially wash hands before eating or touching food. 6. If you or a friend or family member takes any prescription medication, make sure you have a good supply, e.g., at least 4 weeks worth. 7. Don't panic buy enough food to survive a zombie apocalypse. But do buy a few extra provisions. Do it a bit at a time, add a few extra things in when you normally go shopping. Have 2 weeks worth of provisions, including some chocolate or other treats. Don't forget about pets. 8. When local transmission does start, keep your distance from people, at least 2 metres. Especially people showing symptoms, but some people may carry the virus and transmit without symptoms, so generally keep some distance where you can. Stop shaking hands etc. 9. While a mask seems like a good idea, it can give a false sense of security. There isn’t a lot of good evidence that shows a mask to reliably prevent infection when worn by the public. But they are useful to put on a sick person to reduce their spreading of the virus. 10. If you or a loved one becomes sick, follow the practices of the day. Call ahead before going to a Doctor, fever clinic or hospital and get advice on what to do. Think through now how to take care of sick family members while trying not to get infected. 11. Talk things through with friends and family. Be prepared that some people will be very willing to talk about it, others may be reluctant or frightened. But general advice is that it's a good way to prepare emotionally for life not as usual. 12. Unfortunately it doesn't look like this will be over quickly. The new coronavirus may be with us into next year. It might even become a seasonal infection, returning each winter. This is probably going to be a marathon, not a sprint. 13. If you end up stuck at home for a couple of weeks, don't forget about skype/facetime/google hangouts/etc., a great way to catch up, check in and hang out with friends and family. 14. If you manage a business or organisation, cross-train key staff at work so one person’s absence won’t derail our organisation’s ability to function.

Normally, the let-it-play out is almost always better. If you sell, you need to get back in at some point, and often time novice investors (myself included) miss selling at the peak, and miss getting in at the bottom. The last thing you want is to sell thinking it's going to drop more only to have it start recovering. That said, this is not a normal time, IMHO, I believe that when this starting spreading in the US, like it is in Italy, and that will probably in within 2 weeks, there is going to be a nationwide 'panic'. Kinda like what happens when a hurricane is coming... panic buying. I think that's going to cause a huge drop in the market. It may recover a little and stabilize quickly, but I think there is a cliff ahead. I also don't think the market is going to fully recover for the rest of the year. I know my global 500 tech company is looking at a really bad 2nd Qtr because of the virus...and that's just because of Asia. Mix in EMEA and the Americas and the 3rd Qtr will probably be worse... I don't think we will be alone in missing our targets. I'm not giving advice at all, just stating my opinion. -

Why buy back so soon? Are you feeling like the drop is mostly over? It's sitting at $297 which is near a 6-month low. I keep seeing articles talking like this was a large, but normal, market correction, suggesting that there may be a little more to come, but we've had the bulk of it. I don't know if these journalists are just sunshine-pumpers or if I'm being paranoid. I hope I'm wrong, and this post ages poorly, but I think this is getting much worse. We've had floods in Asia impact manufacturing in the Tech sector before, we've have crop problems impact ag futures, we've seen Oil issues impact the market all the time, but I can't recall anything as wide spread as this before. I work for a global Tech company and I know our Asian sales and pre-sales teams have been treading water for more than a month. I don't know if it's going to impact the quarter we're just about to report, but the next one is going to be disastrous. -

Unfortunately, a global pandemic impacting every part of the supply chain and all sales and distribution channels world wide is unlike anything we've every seen before. This has the potential to get very much worse. There are no lessons to be learned from studying historical events. The dreaded Black Swan event is here. The big panic in the US hasn't even started yet, when we see the virus spread in the US like it is in Italy, and it's going to, it will be pandemonium and the market will probably take an epic drop.... and then stabilize, and then it's time to buy. Question is when. -

I dumped just about everything I have on Monday morning except my blue-chip-dividend-paying stocks. I got spooked reading too much stuff on internet; seems I'm not alone. So now I have a big pile of cash outside the market and I'm worried that I'm not going to recognize the time to jump back in. The Virus is going to get worse before it gets better, and I expect the market to do the same...but how low? how long? I have no idea. My current thought is that 30 days from now, the market overall will be lower than it is today. Not sure what my next move is other than wait. -
I'm scheduled for a business conference in Paris the 2nd weekend of March... There is supposed to be about 3000 techies from all over Europe, but people are already starting to pull out. I really _want_ to go, but I'm not sure it's worth the risk.... I'll probably bail this week. I'm curious if the whole conference gets canned. A number of higher profile conference in Europe already have...but most of those were ones where there was a significant presence from China... My conference is just EMEA.
