My youngest two kids are 21 and 22, and over the years since they graduated high school I been divesting myself of holidays. Last year I told them that I wasn’t celebrating Christmas, and that they should spend it with their mom. That left Thanksgiving as the only holiday left for me. Thanksgiving was really my favorite holiday anyway. As long as I can remember, the whole family has gathered up at the ranch for a few days to celebrate Thanksgiving. The family is pretty much split down the middle politically, but for the most part Thanksgiving has remained civil and apolitical. However, that has now ended for me. A few weeks ago my two sisters were at my mom’s house (I’m pretty much responsible now for her care) a they had a pretty disparaging conversation about LGBTQ+ (of course they used different terms) and I pretty much let them have it about what evil people they were. Last week one of them was back over at mom’s house and apologized by telling me she was willing to overlook my son’s faults (he’s gay) because he’s family. I just told her that she should probably leave. So I have now told my brother that I would drop my mom off at the ranch, but that I wouldn’t be staying and someone else will need to make the dressing. I told my kids to plan on pending the holiday with their mom’s family. So I guess it’s just going to be me and the dogs now. I’m not sure what I’m going to cook for us.
