I am a close friend of Henry's and hopefully I can clear up some of the misconceptions. First off, this isn't any type of GoFundMe scam.
Henry does have health insurance, but his insurance isn't great. It's not employer provided, he's paying out of pocket and having been a relatively healthy guy, he didn't opt to get the best insurance possible.
Even with insurance, this was a major event and his bills are astronomical. I can't say I know every single detail, but I believe he had to be airlifted via helicopter to a trauma hospital in downtown Chicago amongst several other complications that required extra care. I don't exactly know how all of that factors into what is covered by his insurance and what isn't at this point, but he spent 3 weeks in ICU and I don't believe the whole thing simply comes down to meeting a deductible and then everything else being covered.
Right now, he's unable to walk and will require on-going physical therapy. This will be a lifelong condition he is facing.
He certainly isn't broke but having made $18m in career earnings, you can quickly deduct that down to less than half ($9m after taxes, agent fees, league fees, union fees, etc are taken out). And then factor he hasn't even been in the league for almost 10 years now. He lives a bit better than your 6-figure tech bro, but anyone would be set back by this major life threatening and long term medical setback. He has a very long journey ahead.
Also note that Henry did not ask for the GoFundMe to be setup. A friend of his made it on his behalf and is making sure he receives all the money, but it's not in Henry's character to ask for money. Having said that, it's a pleasant surprise as he will certainly need the money over time. If it's not for your taste or how you want to spend your money, all good! If you care to donate, it is definitely appreciated by him.
Hopefully this puts some of the shit slinging and speculation to rest.
