I googled it, and it said he was a lefty... But I think this may be a case of AI misinterpreting search results. I see the first several links for it being left handed highlights, and I think it's just summarizing the search results as a fact. But I see now he's listed as a righty on his draft profile. Anyways, if having a right handed Center to pair with Fox makes any conceivable difference, I'll be surprised. Never heard of a player mention that before.

2025 MLB thread
Yeah you're right, a few of O'Neil Cruz's homers were at 120+ EV. I think what they meant is that it was the fastest pitch hit for a homer.

If that was all there was to it, that would be hilariously stupid. Plus Wemby is a lefty, which doesn't help your argument.

2025 MLB thread
"Gurriel crushed a 103.9 mph fastball from Miller into the left-field seats for a two-run homer in the eighth inning, tying the score at 5-all. It was the hardest-hit pitch for a homer since MLB started pitch tracking in 2008."

He had Sabonis in Sac, who is no slouch and garners plenty of attention from the defense. Sabonis is a top 20 player by most accounts, and yet Fox's shooting numbers have been bad to average at best for most of his career. That's not a great indicator for a guy who is 27. Some of that may be him trying to carry a mediocre team and shooting too much to overcompensate for the lack of talent and coaching around him though. However, it's tough to gauge how much better he can be in a system and organization that is considered to be top 5 versus bottom 5 in the league. I know the Spurs have taken guys like this and turned them into better shooters, fixing small things like elbow placement, release point, the way they jump and land, etc etc. The Spurs do that really well and tend to get the most out of their players, so maybe Fox will get a whole lot better. Betting on that growth isn't a bad idea, but if they are wrong it will be an expensive mistake.

The Democratic Party
The framework would be a whole lot better if Republicans would actually follow the laws and stop ignoring them. They treat it the same way modern Christians treat the Bible, they revere and worship it as a holy document ordained by god, but when it comes to actually reading and understanding how it works, they pick and choose the parts they like and ignore the parts that don't support their mission. It's a wholly self-serving ideology completely unrestrained by any moral or ethical principles. Anything can be justified by their interpretation of the ancient words, so long as they ignore details, context and historical precedents, which they enthusiastically do to their own benefit and convenience.

The Democratic Party
Saw this headline on the NYT and it made me chuckle. It applies here, because for all the "helping the poor and downtrodden" that the Dems have historically supported as a main party tennet, they just can't seem to get behind this idea that Israel is committing an obvious and easily preventable genocide in Gaza. I'm sure Cuomo saw the good press and vibes that Zohran got from being against the wholesale slaughter and starvation of Gaza, and thought to himself "gee maybe I should try to take that away from him in this election!" Then I'm sure AIPAC called him and set him straight about what he's allowed to discuss publicly, or maybe his consulting and image team corrected him on it, probably both. Anyways, I think the Dems need to come out stronger as a party on this issue, as it likely would have been the difference in the Presidential election if Kamala had hammered on that issue instead of palling around with Liz Cheney.

Fox deal estimates: Yeesh, that is pricey. Maybe the Spurs can work their magic and fix his 3pt shot, that would make this a lot better.

Texas -- a failed state
Don't be surprised when ICE starts acting on behalf of Texas in the name of "Law and Order" to abduct and deliver some of these reps to Austin...

Wow, that Fox extension is expensive. I thought he would give the Spurs a discount, since he wanted to go there and made that his trade destination. They have a lot of guards to work with, but figuring out the balance is going to be difficult.

Because he is actually accessible and talks to people about lots of different topics, so he has made a lot of friends in the media. I think he gets a lot of friendly coverage from that, plus he's been a successful GM for his career. Lots of GMs avoid anything other than the interviews they are legally obligated to do and are mostly unknown outside of boring press conferences.

For comparison, those 60,000 clean energy jobs currently in Texas are significantly more valuable, environmentally friendly and safer than the entirety of the 42,000 coal miner jobs that exist in the entire US. Coal is a very small industry compared to the rest of the energy market, but it has an outsized voice in politics for other reasons. It should be a national goal to get rid of entirely as an energy source, as it naturally gets replaced with green energy technologies that are constantly making gains in efficiency and cost. The next Dem president should ban exports of coal and essentially cut the balls off the industry to all but remove it from the field. Even other fossil fuels are preferable to coal for energy generation.

Texas -- a failed state
Yeah the only way that happens, and it absolutely should happen, is if Congress passes a new Voting Rights act and SCOTUS upholds it. Not happening for quite some time, so in the mean time they gotta play the game. I think there are a lot more seats to be gained by Dems in Blue states than what the Rs can squeeze out of their states.

Texas -- a failed state
I kinda hope we see Texas move forward with this effort, because I think the Republicans will fuck it up and not gain the 5 seats as promised. Trump won't be on the ballot in 26, and lots of independents don't like this version of him. I think the Rs may be putting other seats in jeopardy that they assume are safe, and this could lead to a some upheaval in the state reps currently in power. It wouldn't be the worst thing if that happened even if the numbers slightly change. More importantly, this nakedly obvious illegal and unethical power grab will give several blue states the motivation and reason to do the same, in a way that will be a huge net positive for the Dems seats in Congress. They have to fight fire with fire, and if they actually believe their warnings of "losing democracy forever" are true, then they need to occupy every seat possible to prevent it. California can definitely squeeze a few Rs out of power, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, etc could all pick up a few more seats. If they all do it, it would result in a seismic shift that could prevent the House from turning red for another decade. The only reason Mike Johnson is even in power is because so many red and purple states have already done what Texas is threatening. So fuck them, fuck playing fair and doing the right thing, moral victories are for losers. Go win the damn thing and start blocking the dumb shit this administration spews out. Fight dirty, fight clean, whatever it takes, just actually fucking fight it.

Houston Astros 2025 Season Thread
Meanwhile the NFL this season is launching ball tracking technology to know exactly where to spot the ball on every play. They can get it down to the frame of the video to know exactly when the player is down and where the ball is at that point. No more stupid outdated chains to measure it, which can lead to human errors. And that only matters a few times in a football game, as opposed to questionable pitches near the edge of the zone, which are much more frequent in baseball.

I doubt it's the full 30m. Everyone knows that's a bad contract. If the Twins eat 10-15m of it each year, that would be a fair deal to take on the rest. After all, the Astros were the only team he would lift his NTC for, so they were over a barrel on this one. Happy to have him back, I hope he is reinvigorated by coming to a club with playoff hopes and a positive outlook!
