  1. What is “west of Houston?” I’m at Katy freeway and 8.
  2. I did 16 mile this morning at 15 mph. My neck and back are sore but I guess that's to be expected. Trak fitted the bike for me but didn't comment on form. I'll look that up.
  3. It was certainly a teaching moment. I was riding a road bike like I would my trail bike and jumped up on an empty sidewalk to avoid some cars. The sidewalk had a little curve I missed because I was looking back to see where I could jump back into the road. Front wheel got caught between the sidewalk and the grass and I failed to pop it out. The bike quickly came to a stop when I turned the handlebars and I kept going. I feel pretty wrecked but will be fine. I'm taking it as a warning from the "have some sense gods" and will be cycling more carefully from here on out.
  4. Well, say day one of cycling did not go well. Went over the handlebars.
  5. Yes, cycling just makes your quads burn or the burn goes away?
  6. Thank you all. The bike girl at Trek has been very helpful and invited on a 35 mile ride late August. Well see how the lead in to that goes. Never thought about aches and pains from sitting in the same position for 2-4 hours. I have no ass and can’t sit on a plane for 3-4 hours without getting uncomfortable. I will go get fitted at Trek if they can stomach a Specialized in their store. If not, there’s other bike stores I’ve been to. I’ve been working I a stationary rehabbing after surgery. Does the thigh burn go away at some point? Or is that just part of riding when you push it. The stat bike course put me on 8 & 9% grades that wore out my quads real fast.
  7. Hi everybody! I’m 47 and blew out part of my knee running high mileage. Surgery was in early May. I’d like to just go right back to running when I’m cleared in a couple of weeks but I’ve been highly urged to take up biking as well to reduce impact on my knees. I know very little about road biking. I’m getting a used Roubaix this weekend and got some basic kit (helmet, jersey, strobe, etc.) from Trek. I plan to jump in and start with a 15-mile ride. I’d like to do a 35 mile ride with the Trek group at the end of August and a 60-miler with my brother and friends in October. No idea how feasible that it but going to try. Any advice or words of wisdom for an older biking newb? Edit- I did get sized and a 56 or 58 should work for me. I’m 6’ 170 lbs. with a longer torso. The Roubaix is 56 cm.
  8. Just an fyi - my fatass tried to lose weight for years while drinking way too much. Never worked more than a blip here and there. Quit drinking and turned into a skinny bitch in six months.
  9. The bottom line is you have to go for it. Whether a hard drinker or a true alkie, you know - likely for years - that alcohol is a problem a problem. It sure as shit isn't going to solve itself. It might be a big pain in the ass to quit or it might be relatively easy. But there really aren't any other reasonable options other than quitting or riding the downward spiral as far as it will take you.
  10. My power is back on after 9 hours. The folks across the street, not so lucky.
  11. Its been nothing more than a longer-lasting summer storm at Katy freeway and beltway 8. A lot of branches and some trees down. Power is still on.
  12. This is either a good joke or the storm-driven recurrence of carpetbagger ignorance.
  13. Huh, you got this take from a ten-year MLB vet on the one hand, and some Karan crying from the mom of an underperforming dwarf on the other. I can’t decide which one to believe.
  14. He was either borrowing money or claiming to raise capital for something and ran of with the cash. He did it to a few people. There was a texags thread out there on it but its old and I don't know if its still around.
  15. That guy is out of prison but he's been disbarred from practicing law, got divorced and is persona non grata because he scammed a bunch of people on Texags out of money. Real winner that guy turned out to be.
  16. I was thinking it most likely had to be them. That is one aggy program. I’m not aware of any other LL program that positions itself to be an offshoot of a college program.
  17. The SOC changed from 50 to 45 without family history of cancer a few years ago. My doc told me about this change during treatment because I was dx’d at 40. So probably 2017-18-ish.
  18. We just got back from a week in Cooperstown All Star Village for the 12u. I had been told it was an amazing experience and it was. The kids absolutely loved it. 64 teams and they played 9 games in 4 days. For those of you who haven't heard of it yet (because you will at some point) it's a wonderful experience. Competition level was AA to majors, but there were a lot of AA-level teams there. Here's HR and a strike out*.\ * I have no idea if that's actually a strike out or not, but he did have SOs so it could be.
  19. My man - I may have way overdone it on running and had OATS surgery 6 weeks ago. I have been told by three doctors that I need to mix in something else with running so I'm eyeing a 70.3 next April. I can already tell my wife is going to be really pissed if I fuck up my knee again and have to have surgery.
  20. I can confirm Newdoc may know what he's talking about. I've had both and I'd certainly rec the scope over the cancer. I'm back for my 3 year tomorrow. Prep day sucks worst than procedure day.
  21. There's some good advice on this thread and I'd add to keep calm and carry on. Her world is not going to implode overnight. You don't have to permanently change diet/lifestyle but his weekend. You don't have to go no-carbs. A diabetes diagnosis is scary and there's information overload but you have time to get it figured out. An easy initial option is to move towards foods with a lower glycemic index. There's comprehensive lists all over the internet.
  22. I don’t know a thing about the chemistry or math but as an anecdotal point my body seriously does not like alcohol. I was a daily drinker for years and was 6’ 230 when I quit. About a month after that weight just started melting off and now I’m usually 165-175. In addition to the empty calories I suspect the alcohol slowed my metabolism.
  23. He also spent a bunch of money -650,000,000 - that the City doesn’t have to settle with the firefighters after voluntarily dismissing the City’s legal defenses. His plan is to kick the can down the road and make the city even more broke.
  24. Hezbollah fired a buttload of rockets at Israel and set it ablaze. Wonder if the loons are going to throw a temper tantrum when Israel responds.
