According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be set in 13th century England, featuring dialogue true to that time period, and translation and annotations to help the audience with understanding it. It was initially conceived as a black-and-white film (as his 2019 film The Lighthouse was), but that is reportedly no longer the case. Werwulf promises to be of a piece with Eggers’ existing filmography (including 17th Century horror The Witch and Iceland-set Viking tale The Northman), which often sees him exploring mythical creatures and folklore in a long-ago time period, presented as authentically as possible. Eggers reunites with The Northman co-writer Sjón for the new film, which is scheduled for release in the US on Christmas Day, 2026. His work was most recently on the big screen with Nosferatu, an adaptation of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 classic vampire horror starring Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe and Bill Skarsgård.
