  • Dismantling the warriors

    Wulaw Horn

I think that the Steph era warriors are through winning titles. I thought that was probably the case even before Klay got injured, but doubly so now.
wiseman looks pretty good and they have Minnesota’s pick next year which should also be pretty good. The question then becomes, is there any chance they blow it up, Florida Marlins style, and set about rebuilding for their next title run. I think it’d be interesting.
What could you get for Steph?  Dray?  Would anyone be willing to trade for Klay while he’s injured?
looks like they are going to suck again and have 2 high lottery picks (in addition to wiseman) so if it’s me I think I would want to build around at least some present talent.
Kind of interesting to me to think that this team who was so awesome together might now be worth more sold for its parts.

I saw a suggestion of Harden for Klay, Wiseman and a future 1st. Unlikely but as a Rocket fan, I’d love that.

That’s a different way of doing it I guess. So that’s leave you firmly in win now with harden, Steph and Dray?

That’d be an interesting team but not the way I think I’d go if I were them.

I guess what it all boils down to for

me is “what is Steph worth on the open market- and could you think about dealing him and resetting your window to win your next title on wiseman mike timeline as opposed to a Steph timeline. The harden move would be a chance to win on a Steph timeline obviously.
that team seems a bit too small for the lakers to me.

I think Steph and Klay are with the Warriors until they retire. They are too important to the fans and the organization.

It is possible they could get someone like Bradley Beale for Andrew Wiggins plus maybe a pick since Beale may leave Washington in free agency anyway.

There are also free agents who will want to play for GS. Some options for next year would be DeRozan, Oladipo, Lowry, Otto Porter, Drummond, Aldridge.

If they are going to flip any of the original champs it would probably be Draymond Green. Maybe it would be possible to give him up for one of the above free agents who are leaving that team anyway. Someone like Lamarcus Aldridge.

A dream scenario would be give up Wiggins and the Minnesota pick for Beal. And then trade Draymond For LaMarcus Aldridge and go for it this year. They would have:

    Steph Curry
    Bradley Beale
    Kelly Oubre
    LaMarcus Aldridge
    James Wiseman

That is good enough to compete for the title this year, and even better next year when you can swap Oubre for Klay and Wiseman is another year better.

I doubt Mn pick and Wiggins is enough. If it is- yeah- you would do that in a heartbeat.

Two games in and we're bailing on the entire roster already? If they truly, truly suck again this year they are going to have their own top 5ish pick plus Minnesota's if it's not top 3 in what everybody says is a great draft. That's enough young assets without giving up your veteran championship core and culture. So they would have Wiseman, two more really good prospects on rookie scale deals, Steph, Klay, and Draymond plus whatever they can cobble together on the bench of Oubre, Wiggins, Looney, Chriss, Poole, etc. I wouldn't blow up shit. Hold tight and get set for the next 10 years while transitioning from this era to the next.

Of course, everybody is ignoring the east bay curse.

Yeah- for me it’s more about how good your assets are going to be but how young. I’m not saying do this now btw- you probably wouldn’t want to do anything but suck this year so you can get another high pick of your own. But you want to suck imo. And if you end up with Wiseman and two top picks I’d want to get younger and better to try to get that 10 year window. Steph, X-ray and allay aren’t part of a 10 year window they are part of a what 3 year plan?  Of which year 1 seems to be broken?
would Boston do Jaylen Brown and (Lots of) picks next year for Steph next year?  Should That be interesting to Golden State?

They are also, again, deep into really serious luxury tax he’ll for a shitty team. That can’t be fun to cut those checks.
I don’t know. If you are going to send Steph and Klay packing you damn sure better get the reset for a decade right.

This too.  Let's not overreact.    We all knew they would not be world beaters but I hope no one really thinks they are as bad as they got beat in these first two games.   They have a largely new roster and still missing Draymond.   They should challenge for the 7-8 seed this yr.

Nah, Klay wasn't an athletic freak to start.    He will be able to shoot like he always has until he is at least 40-45.   He may not be the great defender forever but that shot is going nowhere.   Giving him and Wiseman (who I think is perfect for them) AND a pick would be foolish.

The fans would fucking revolt if they traded a rehabbing his ass off, selfless, professional Klay for Harden, even if it meant more wins in the short term. It still wouldn't be a championship-caliber team, especially defensively, and you've traded your fun, exciting offense with 2 of the greatest shooters and heat check guys to ever live for Harden ball.

I don’t think they will. They are incentivized to tank, the west is brutal, and I think they want to hang more banners in the future. Finishing in the play in tournament this year doesn’t do that.
I’m guessing. This is my read though.

Especially having the MIN pick they aren't incentivized to tank.     They already got a #2 pick who looks to be the real deal and a great fit for them.     I anti-tanking though so I don't really ever see it as a viable option.

Steph and Klay are Warriors until they don't want to be IMO.  They are the greatest Warriors (along with Rick Barry) in the history of the franchise.  Because of this, they probably are on trajectory towards a slow burn decline.  Look, it was absolutely worth everything they did.  They got 5 WC championships with 3 rings.  A fantastic legacy and dynasty and they should be nothing but thankful.  Only thing that may change this is if Wiseman becomes a top 25 player by next year and they get another top 3 pick who's a franchise player.  All of this, let's trade Klay or Steph shit is fantasy bullshit unless one or both agree, which I think is remote.

For this year, they have to figure out how to get Steph to play at an elite or near elite level again to try and make the playoffs.  He looks a little lost without Klay.  Many of us were of the opinion that as soon as KD decided he was leaving, it was the end of the Warriors and right now that looks apt.  They can still stave off absolute decline by nailing Wiseman and next year's pick but the championship days of the splash brothers as the core are over.  It's a tricky transition and the odds are against them but it was a hell of a run.

Obviously Wilt was great but he never won a title for them so yeah Steph/Klay would be above him as far as franchise players go.

What about the tech bro culture do you think is so dripping in sentimentality that you think they will handcuff themselves into a slow decline bc they “owe the to the splash bro’s” to do so?
It sounds like you thought their run was more or less over last year with KD gone and no data point we’ve seen says that’s wrong. It’s an odd conclusion though that you’ve leapt to, imo.

First, trading Klay comes with the reality that you're trading him very low, which I believe is probably warranted.  He will not have played for 2 years and these are two rather serious and possibly devastating injuries.  He's still owed about 150 million on his contract, so his relative value is extremely low.  So what do you think a team is going to pony up for Klay?  Even packaged with a Wiseman, his contract in a Covid world makes him difficult to move.

Second, the reverence in which Bob Myers speaks about Klay and what he means to the city, fanbase and organization.

    Quote

Myers' response to NBC Sports Bay Area's Monte Pool asking him to summarize what Thompson means to the fabric of the organization:

"I talked to somebody today, an opposing coach just called me who I really admire and respect, and called and said 'I'm very sorry about Klay.' And I said I think there's two players in the NBA that everybody likes and respects without a doubt. And I'm going to say the other guy's name. I don't think I'm going to get in trouble I don't think I'll get in trouble but I'll say the other guy's name. I think it's Klay Thompson and Derrick Rose. Those two guys, I think, are universally beloved.

"And how your peers feel about you in life I think says more than anything else. And I really believe that. And I think that [Klay] is admired within. He's admired without. And you can't put in words what he means to our team. What he means to our fans, our coaching staff, his teammates."

At every point 2013, 2014, 2017, etc, Myers has resisted any ideas about trading these two, except a rumor in 2011 when both were young talent and not stars.  There are comments and feelings like this put out by Myers and Kerr all the time.  No reputable reporting has the Warriors considering trading Klay (or Steph) that I've seen.  Instead, it had them considering packaging next year's pick and Wiseman or Wiggins or both to get a win now piece.  Now, I'm not saying it may not make sense to evaluate his trade value or consider trading him in a logic bubble, but I simply don't see it happening unless Klay and Steph approved such a deal and I don't think they're there just yet.  I think they want to play together next season with a Wiseman and rookie (or whatever those pieces may provide) them and seeing if they can't make one last run.

Relationships and unity mean something to these organizations.  It's the same reason you didn't see teams look like the Spurs trade Manu when they could have used a youth infusion in 2010 or Dallas move Dirk when they needed to rebuild.  Some teams and organizations don't look at these situations the same as fans who look at these guys as just pieces to move around because it's fun to talk about.  I get it, the league is more transactional in nature of building teams, but personally, I don't see them moving these guys unless it was approved by each.  Feels more like fan wish fulfillment, IMO.

I get what you are saying - I just don’t think that loyalty exists. Anywhere.
Dallas made sense to hold onto dirk (and the lakers with Kobe) as stealth tank reasons, you aren’t any reasonable amount of time away from contending- so why not let it rip.
mid argue the same with Klamath and Steph, oddly enough, except for the fact that they are going to fall into 3 lotto picks in a row- the first of which looks to be pretty good. That’s a huge start on a rebuild most teams don’t get.
if you could get younger, way cheaper, and give yourself a 10 year window trading guys that you won’t win another tire with... I think you have to do it or think really hard about it at least.
I might be totally and completely off base. Maybe they trade their young talent for another grasp at a ring on the back 9 of the splash brothers and Drays career. I just wouldn’t bet my money that way.

Disagree. You just have to be right. If

they trade steph against his will and win the title in 2023 with pieces they got in that deal nobody is going to care.
If not, well- yeah- that might not be good.
But what if Denver offered you Murray and MPJr. Then you traded Klay and Dray for Bradley Beale and you ended up with a team that was:

    Murray

    Beale

    Wiggins

    MPjr

    Wiseman.

2 high lotto picks in 2021.

Thats a group that could compete for a title for years and years and years and wouldn’t pay 9 figures in luxury taxes (I don’t think) right now like their current group.
now- would Denver be open for a Curry for Murray/MPJr.?  No idea, but if they thought Curry and Joker could win a title they probably ought to do it. Or at least have a meeting. I wouldn’t think if they won a title and set up

competition for a bunch more anyone would burn their house down as I typically believe we are mostly rooting for laundry, but maybe I’m wrong and this is an exception that proves the rule.

I should also note- if they are bottom of the west again like I think they will be that will destroy a bunch of their equity from the title wins. Not that people will dislike the guys, but it will be easier to part with them.
I was a huge 49er fan growing up and had no problem transitioning from Montana to Young. Nobody did. And Montana was as beloved as Steph Curry in the bay.

In 2 or 3 years? If Wiseman is really good and one of those two high draft picks next year end up really good and Porter Jr. becomes good?  You could be talking about 5 top 30 types in Beal, Murray (already top 30 guys) Wiseman, Porter Jr. and a couple top 10 picks.
If that happens nobody cares. If you are correct and they are a 6 seed in perpetuity yeah- it’s ugly.

There is zero defense on that team.

Plus you’re talking about trading a transcendent superstar, who could absolutely still win titles with the right roster, for the chance to get some high draft picks that may or may not work out. There’s no reason for them to preemptively close their title window by moving Steph.

I think it’s already closed and that was before Klay ripped up an ACL and an Achilles. I might well be completely wrong and he might make me look incredibly stupid. But I had them missing the playoffs last year (and they looked like dogshit even before Curry got hurt) and I have them being terrible again this year and 2 games in I’m not seeing any reason to doubt that.
I actually in that scenario wasn’t trading anyone for picks. Just a couple high upside younger guys.

You don’t need to move Steph to reopen that window though. They have pieces they can move to create a decent roster. Steph is not one of those pieces. Steph is the guy that makes a good roster a title contender. He needs a good roster to do that because he’s a small guard but you don’t move one of the 5-10 best guys in the league for potential. You build around that guy to compete.

But how long is their window open with Steph where he’s still one of those top 5-10 guys and does Wiseman and whoever they get next year in the draft with their own probably high pick and the T Wolves probably high pick get good enough quick enough to be those guys that he can put over the top.
this thread got started by me based upon some thoughts I had with their opening 2 games and somebody calling Curry a ceiling raiser not a floor setter and it got me thinking.

It was in Bateman's quote from Bob Myers:

I think it's Klay Thompson and Derrick Rose. Those two guys, I think, are universally beloved.

Derrick Rose changed his game and has officially resurrected is career

    ^^^^^^ This guy.

    Quote

In October 2016, Rose and two friends were found not liable in a gang rape case related to an incident that took place on 26 August 2013. The alleged victim, who did not come forward with the complaint until 2015, accused Rose, Randall Hampton and Ryan Allen of breaking into her Los Angeles apartment and raping her while she was incapacitated from an evening of drinking. She also claimed to being drugged by the men.

Like many sexual assault cases, it turned into a “he said, she said” affair, with the focus weighing heavily on the woman to prove her case against a superstar athlete and idol of millions (including, it would seem, the jury members who posed for photos with Rose in the aftermath).

Despite Rose admitting to not knowing what consent meant, and admitting that, yes, he and his friends did have sex with the woman while she was intoxicated, he was not held accountable in any way for his actions.

Perhaps the most shocking part of the trial was the admission Rose gave in response to what he and his friends were planning on doing once they arrived at the apartment:

Q: So they just said, ‘Hey, it’s the middle of the night. Let’s go over to plaintiff’s house’ and they never gave you a reason why they wanted to go over there?’

Rose: No, but we men. You can assume.

    Q: I’m sorry?

Rose: I said we men. You can assume. Like we leaving to go over to someone’s house at 1 a.m., there’s nothing to talk about.

Q: All right. Is there — within what you just reviewed in those text messages — is there anything within them that would lead you to believe that plaintiff wanted to have sex with you and the other two defendants on August 26, 2013?

    Rose: No.

That team would kinda suck @Wulaw Horn. They would be disastrous on the defensive end.

Eh- then form a different team- that was literally just an off the top of my head example of something they could do. But I don’t think there’s any way that team sucks in 2 or 3 years if they get progression you’d expect

feom wiseman and of MPJr doesn’t break (which could happen).
the entire point of what I’m saying is I think this version of the warriors is dead and they have enough going for them that I think they ought to make some baseball style trades where they trade wins today for more wins tomorrow.
And I’m saying that Steph sucks (not

really- just that LBJ might have been right when Steph got all that shine as the best player in the world- but

    its complicated).

Why would Denver do this?  It appears the Nuggets are pretty high on MPJ.

Michael Porter Jr. is apparently untouchable in trade talks after showcasing his potential during the 2020 NBA playoffs for the Denver Nuggets, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst.

"In talking to teams around the league, the Nuggets have made it clear: Michael Porter Jr. is not available," Windhorst said on the Hoop Collective podcast (h/t RealGM). "Do not ask."

Certainly, why the fuck would the Wizards consider trading for two old or broken down assets for Beal?  There's no real reason to do that deal nor value to them.

I don't find your hypothetical rooted in reality in any genuine way.  It's fun for fan fiction but feels like there's no real path for that to happen.

I’m not saying Denver would do it- I’m saying they might consider it if they thought pairing  Steph and joker could win them a title.
Also I’m not saying Washington would do it but maybe Beal wants out and something like that is the best offer.
It’s interesting though that you are arguing not enough from golden state and others are arguing “Wulaw’s proposed new team is dogshit horrible”.   I’m more of the opinion you are correct and not the other side arguing the dubs aren’t getting enough here.
Of course it’s fan fiction- everything we do here is mental masterbation. If the warriors did trade off their pieces it looks nothing like what I suggested I’m sure- I was just kicking shit around I’m my head.

    This thread is a disaster.

GSW will be fine with a healthy Klay and Dray along with Steph, Wiseman and whatever high pick they get next summer.  Although they might be better off trying to couple that pick with Wiggins and maybe talk Beal into a S&T.   Regardless, shit changes pretty quickly in the league so with a move or two they can be right back in it.    Giving up Steph and Klay will only be done if they ask out.
