I know it's an expensive beginning but it's something I've wanted to do for a long, long time.

My first guitar was a black and gold Les Paul custom.  I was 15.  I mowed lawns for the better part of a year.   Knocked on my neighbors’ doors and offered my lawn mowing services.

I think they were all rooting for me... right up until I bought my first amp.

Backstory.  When I was a kid I wanted to play guitar.  Badly.
Parents intervened and said learn to play piano and then you can learn guitar.  So, I did and I was decent but the guitar learning never came.  Now, so many years later I want to realize the dream.  My question is, is this to ambitious to start with American Acoustisonic Telecaster?  I want something that I can start with and that will take me where I want to go.  I know it's an expensive beginning but it's something I've wanted to do for a long, long time.
Thanks for any and all input.

Fuck it. Why not?

Seriously.

Go for it.   As long as it inspires you to play and you can afford it, it doesn't matter how good you are.

All these guys are correct. If this is what makes you think you’ll play it, then that’s the one you should get.

Because as all here know, if your interest in that guitar wanes, you can always get another.

When I decided to start playing a few years ago, my friend told me two things. 1) if you want to eventually play electric, learn on an electric and vice versa if you want to play mostly acoustic. 2) buy a guitar that feels comfortable. Strum several and don't get your heart set on one particular guitar before going. You may not like how it feels and if you don't, you won't want to learn.

Thank you all for the input so far.  This isn't something I'm going to jump into quickly.  I'll do a lot more research on it.

Why I started the thread with that guitar?  I like that it's a hybrid which I can start out on in acoustic mode.  I like that it's on the smallish side and that it's light.  Thanks again for the help.

I'm curious about the acoustasonic but trust me, you'll eventually end up with a Tele and a Martin...

Don’t get your heart set is excellent advice, which I’ve occasionally not followed. And regretted.

It's funny that you say that.  I've started looking at used Martin's to learn on.

Can't go wrong there. Even the entry level models are solid guitars.

I'm reading the new Jeff Tweedy book right now.  He writes an amusing passage about how his mom got him a shiny new JC Penny guitar when he was 7 or 8 and it was a total piece of shit that put him off guitar for a few years.  He muses about how many young people were set astray from the musical path just by having tried to start on an "instrument" that was more akin to a cheese grater than a guitar.  Point being, buy something decent.  But it sounds like you know that already.

I think the acoustasonic is very interesting. But I wouldn’t start with it.

I’d recommend a strat with a humbucker in the bridge position (referred to as HSS). To me it’s the most versatile electric there is especially if the humbucker is coil tapped (meaning you can use it as a single too).

Thankfully, the days of really shitty entry-level instruments seem to be behind us.

String roundup.  What are y'all rocking?   I'm hooked right now on a combo of light on the steels and Gibson VR pure nickel mediums on the wrapped, going 10-13-17-30-42-50.  I have to break up 2 packs to make it, so I just need to make friends with someone who favors 11-14-18-26-36-46 and we can split the cost.

You inspire me sir.

I might have to appropriate one of these:

And a TV is definitely in the works. As is a receiver and good pair of speakers. I want it to be a listening room as well as a playing room.

It’s 12’ by 18.5’, which I think should work. Need some amp stands.

I'm bout these D'addario NYXLs. Longest lasting most corrosive resistant strings I've ever played.
