The Guitar Pron Thread

It really is absurd that I don’t have a good traditional Strat. I have an American HH that I’ve had since the 90s, and I have the Squier that I picked up on one of those Fender fire sales for next to nothing but it’s not as easy to play as the HH. Out of seven electrics it’s the only one with single coils, and yet nearly all the big Strat players are my heroes and influences.

Every time I really think about getting one I get into analysis paralysis.

Get one. Then if you don’t like it, get another one. Keep going until you get the one(s) you like.

Problem solved.

Mid to late 80s (86--very early 90) Strate/Tele pickups are the sweet spot.

This is obviously the answer. I mean hell even one of those Adorama fire sale models is probably decent.

I need to get through a few waves of upcoming expenses first and see where I’m at.

Fuck all that. Just bite the bullet and by a real deal American made strat. In the color you like.

That guitar has made the rock and roll world go around since 1950-whatever. You won’t be disappointed.

Yeah, that's f*cking ridiculous.  I'm not sure if it's Gibson or Sweetwater who should be more embarrassed (insert "why not both" gif).

I'm pretty sure Duesenberg PLEKs every single guitar they make, including guitars waaaaaay cheaper than 6 or 7K.

It costs what, maybe $200 at a shop?  And that includes profit?
A $6K guitar should come out of the factory essentially perfect.  This is like buying a Porsche 911 and getting a $1K "tuneup" offer.

And the crazy thing is I’d never buy that guitar online (even I was in the market for a $6k acoustic guitar) because it’s so damn expensive and Gibson’s hit or miss quality reputation.

$300 on a $6K guitar is 5% of the retail price.

Apparently a basic 911 goes for $145K these days, so that tuneup would run you:

 $7,250

It’s $300 to put it through the plek machine at Sweetwater. I think that’s something they offer on every guitar. Gibson has a bunch of plek machines they use to do a pass on the frets in production - not sure if they use that on the jumbos or whatever but I think any new standard and above Les Paul goes through that.

so I never heard of this store in Carrboro near Chapel Hill but it seems interesting

And they forgot to paint the hummingbird on that hummingbird’s pick guard!

Yeah, the Sweetwater plek pitch is a "would you like to supersize your bougie gear order?" offer.  On Reverb there is a clear gear price correction going on with the used market, I don't think it's started to trickle up to the new market yet where prices are set primarily by manufacturers.  So I wouldn't buy a new guitar now that has a jacked up covid/stimulus price and a much larger than normal value drop as soon as the word "used" can be attached to it.  Pedals and stuff under $300 are still moving, guitars over $1000 are slooooowww and sellers are cutting prices to pre-covid (normal?) levels to get a buyer.  There are always outliers, but that seems to be the general trend.

For you Rick Beato fans, this interview combines two of my favorite music channels. That Pedal Show interviewing Rick Beato.

His family went to see Stonehenge and he went to see the Pedal Show Guys instead lol! They totally geek out, great video.

People keep posting this and every time I think, "man, reposting this doesn't make it any less true."

Every time I see it or post it I always think of Nikki Sixx as probably the exception to that rule.

So maybe Slacks is going to be the next Nikki Sixx.

I hope he does and I hope he posts all his conquests in IPIHB.

But Nikki Sixx doesn't play bass.

I never realized until now how absurdly heavy my other telecaster is. Twin House in Carrboro (which is an even smaller hippie town next to Chapel Hill) is a really cool shop, they didn't offer much for my 2012 American Ash Deluxe so now I have two proper teles. And I need to either sell the other telecaster or get new pups in it because this one does sound just much better. I'm not way into relic stuff but I do love the feel of this, and the kinda... non shininess already dinged up-edness of the whole thing. Can't get a good picture of the neck, but I'm sure I'll do a whole burst picture or something. Happy about this.

Best thing about a reliced guitar is the absence of heart drop when you first bang it on something that would leave a mark.

Yup. I had been wanting to modify or replace my telecaster, and the Isbell tele got lodged in my head after the dnc performance and some of the discussion here.

Awesome. Been thinking the same thing. Actually warned the better half about it the other day.

What do you think so far?

Yep. Haha.

I know it can be divisive, but this is "the one" for me. Not heavy and those pickups....damn...got to go plug it back in.
