Every guitar is a play it and don't worry about the dings situation. I've already chipped the paint on my '58 refin.

Since it's from the future, maybe the mark will disappear?

Dude I seriously was googling the Dunlop Flow picks, not that I'm ever going to change the same purple Tortex I've been playing for 25 years, and the first hit I got was a Reddit post about a yellow Tortex cake. I'm like there's no way this happened to two people....

So I got some picks to try, one of which was some Jazz III XLs, and I didn't even have to open the damn bag to know these goddamn things are way too small.

So if anyone wants a free bag of picks hit me up and I'll mail them too you.

Look at picks on this site.

https://bogstreet.com/

All sorts of picks to choose from that are “non traditional”.

This guitar has been with him since 12/25 and has likely had the tuner clipped on the entire time.  Two rings/indentations and we will never make that mistake again.  This guitar is really pretty and this isn't a "play it and don't worry about the dings" situation.
So, I'm off to the pedal thread to discuss in line tuners.
In other news, I'm taking him to see Bob Dylan play, which is nice.

We need to see the whole guitar please.

The guy mixing our record is incredible. He's making us sound way better than we deserve. So far we have rough mixes of 5 or the 15 we recorded. By rough mixes, these are for us to listen to before we go back and fix what needs fixed, then do a final mix. There's plenty that needs fixed, but I really like where this is heading. This is only my second time making a record and Im really appreciating what I learned making the last.

Here's 2 selections for you guys that I probably shouldnt be sharing outside the band and my close circle, but hell, Ive been here so long most of you feel like friends and some of you actually have became friends in real life over the years.

Sally needs no back story. Typical scene that plays out every night somewhere.

Bear Song though, that was written before my time in the band and is funny. One of the songs that made me decide to join when invited. The idea is that your out in the woods with your baby when all of the sudden there's a bear attack. You can either fight the bear until it eats you and then eats the baby or, as in this case, just hand over the baby and give yourself time to run away. At least there's a survivor in that scenario. What they call dark humor.

This is a good peak into what we got going on. Oh, and officially I quite the band due to "artistic differences". If thats not resolved my bass lines will be deleted and re-recorded by somebody else, but I've been told it it will be worked out and they are still acting like I never quit. Who knows. I doubt they'l ever get this out without me, amd they know that. We're called The Koffs for a reason.

Speaking of hybrid picking (which I never got the hang of):

I’m gonna miss Brent in Mastodon terribly, but I can’t wait to see what he does next.

Interestingly enough I never really got the hang of it either, and I didn't set out to become passable at it, but I picked it up when I was doing triad practice. Once the muscle memory in my right fingers was there it's like can't unsee it.

I think the time had come for all involved for Brent to leave, seemed like a bad situation. I was never super into them, I gave it a whirl when Leviathan came out, but too plodding for my tastes, I lean more thrash. But they are a very talented group. Not sure if you saw but Ben Eller is filling in.

I had my J45 at my office for a while, and it had a snark and a cheap capo clipped to the headstock. I was dumb. I accepted the scars as stupid tax but I asked my guitar guy to see if he could do anything about it last year when I took that guitar guy in for a setup. He was able to touch it up - it's not invisible, but it's less visible. WIth the light up close and just right you can see the scars from the snark and then even that straight line above the D string is a permanent mark from the capo. From far away, less visible.

If I was in Austin, I would 1000% take it to my buddy Julio at Moon Music.

Julio used to be at Straight Fret, he opened up Moon Music with a friend after I left town, it seems like a cool shop. Julio is the one who fixed my Gretsch that got ruined through a combination of Warped Tour and long term alcoholic depression

I think I screwed myself early in my playing day by learning to hold the pick with three fingers. That leaves only my ring and pinky to do anything else and I’ve just been doing it too long to undo it.

Plodding is not how I would describe Mastodon, but I am incapable of being objective about them. Absolute Atlanta legends, I’ve seen them more than any other band in my life, and I’ve seen a few. I did see that Ben is filling in, and he’s talented, but the other big gap is going to be Brent’s voice. Songs like Oblivion just won’t be the same.

And to make up for no pr0n, here’s his funky 9 string

It seems like he’s super talented but a train wreck of a human. A combo that is not infrequently seen in our little corner of the world. Do I have that right?

Only seen them once and it was a great show.

Love that Gretsch. How does it sound through the Matchless?

Sounds great, super chimey, I got obsessed with ringing open strings when I started playing that gretsch and the matchless.

it’d a fuzzy time but I want to say that the main guitar on this song is gretsch and that matchless, and I think the baritone guitar also went through the matchless and a bunch of reverb

That’s awesome. I had one a while back. Was impossible to keep in tune. I’d be interested to know how that goes with the Taylor.

He'll sell it the minute it's time for a restring. :)

Interesting. I was googling Marcus Miller's again recently because i was cleaning up my Fender Marcus Miller and I guess he's basically got a whole line of basses with this Sire brand? Obviously that looks like a 51 p - love those, they have a great sound.

I've got a Sire LP with P-90s that is flawless and punches well above it's weight. Thought I give this a try. My Sweetwater guy gave me a nice discount.

The LP...

Sire does nice necks. They roll the fretboard edges, too.

So free to anyone that wants them, I have a dozen each Jazz III XL Tortex 1.5mm, Herco 75, and Tortex III 1mm picks. Plus random assorted Fender 351 mediums.

Maybe some of the beginner guitar threads peeps like @Gourmand or @tigol would be interested in trying some different picks?

Thanks for thinking of me!

I’m good for now. I don’t use one much these days because my husband doesn’t like the way it sounds when I use one. Probably too loud and definitely shitty.

Whatever. Just writing that makes me want to turn up my amp. lol.

So I was actually half right and half wrong about the pick experiment. I indeed did not end up wanting any of these picks I bought. But.... I did end up favoring something different than my purple Tortex for some of my Strat playing. One of my very first picks, which I still somehow have, don't ask me how. The old Fender Medium 351 celluloid confetti from the late 80s early 90's, but played with the shoulder and not the point. Well, it actually doesn't really have a point anymore, but still.

20250330-170731.jpg

If anyone can find these I will absolutely pay money for them, as apparently they were only made for a couple years. All the other confettis have darker colors, there was like a 3 year run of the ones with bright pink and light blue.  The one on the right is a normal confetti, the one in the middle is as close as I've found, I think it's a mid 80's era.

This reminded me that I forgot to report back on the Texas Special pickups I put in my telecaster.

I love them.  A lot.  I assume they are what y'all describe as "hot" because I barely touch a string and they kinda growl.  It's awesome.

I also bough an Ibanez tube screamer.  Goddamn.  That is a fun little dude.  I like it a ton more than the 3 other Boss pedals I have and it's the cheapest one.
