Filtertrons and the model number beginning with a 6. ie 6120 (Chet Atkins), 6128 (Duo Jet), 6136 (White Falcon), etc.

All the Pro-Line models start with a 6, and they are beautifully made in Japan.

The Electomatic line, the models start with a 5. They are made in Korea or China as tbone mentioned. I'm sure they are fine for the money you'll save.

Thanks. I’m torn between scratching the itch of getting something new right now like this or a rick... or waiting to get the 335 I want early hopefully next year

I might have recommended holding out for when Adorama starts blowing out the hollow body Electromatics again, like they seem to do every year. But I heard that after I got mine they started making them in a China factory rather than Korea, the big sale price also got lower. Not sure if the factory thing is verified or not. I've seem some decent reviews of the Streamliner series, but the Electromatic is supposed to be a significant step upwards.

And this year there don't seem to be many sales, with all the crapola that's going on. So who the hell knows.

Didn’t see the price tags on them gretsch’s. I’ll have to get a 335 before them! Reverb had them for around $5500-$6500

Oh weird, it looks like there's.... a lot of 1950s era Gretsches on Reverb. That's what you're seeing. New Japanese Gretsches are more in the 2-3.5k range, and recently new are slightly discounted.

I want to say I paid $1600 for my Duo Jet. That is the number that comes to mind, it sounds about right. Looks about right from this - maybe there was room to wiggle and I just breezed by.

I get that.  This may be more endemic to a loose town like Austin, but if a band takes a request that they haven't rehearsed, they will be far better served if they're ear-trained to the point that they respect everyone they're on stage with and do them the honor of paying attention.  Sometimes one player goes rogue and the best solution is for everyone else to follow along, but some players are so rigid that they either don't hear what's happening or don't care.  I find that insulting if I'm on stage with them.  I might be a motherfucker on open G/C/E/D/A/F and maybe a few barre chords, can't play a lick of lead, but I will damn sure pay attention to what you and the others are doing and try to fit my rudimental chops in so I don't rock the boat (baby).

some people just have no ear for that

So I talked to my Sweetwater sales guy for an hour on the phone. He made some great points and ultimately this is what I landed on. I gotta sell some memorabilia to get this but I think it may be the right call

The Rick I got long ago was a 360/12 special edition with some extra binding or something, beautiful classic cherry sunburst, stereo jacks. It was gorgeous and sounded it, too. A guy had it on order for a year from the factory through Heart Of Texas music, then he bailed on it when it came in. I couldn't afford it, but i couldn't resist, it was a dream guitar for me and i took a massive plunge.

I couldn't play it for squat, though, with the seemingly narrow neck making it dang near impossible to make a clean 12-string chord with my fatass fingers. I had to sell it and recoup my money back, which fortunately i did 100%.

I’m selling sports memorabilia old watches to get this in my collection. I gotta get within $1000 cash and it’s mine

Got my new Keeley Memphis Sun pedal today. Plugged it in...why does this sound so wrong?
Five minutes later realized I had the amp reverb turned up to about 7.
D'oh!

My kids have a habit of occasionally stomping on my stomp boxes. More than once they have left the wah pedal cocked and on and I can’t figure out why the hell everything sounds so bad.

Got it dialed in, finally. Folsom Prison Blues never sounded so good.

Epiphone Porn, in the form of a buddy's LP he left here after jamming last night.

This guitar has played a ton of shows in a lot of janky places. I'd never noticed the "markers" he added at the 3rd and 5th frets. Not a bad idea actually.

I dunno, most folks around here don’t like relic’d guitars...

I read once that Danny Gatton replaced his side markers with cubit zirconia. I’m sure it helped in dark places.

He has a book out about the history of bass and his collection.- Geddy Lee's Big Beautiful Book of Bass. I'm about half way through it right now. Lots of great photos and nerdy details about the instruments.

Watched the book infomercial before the rush movie a couple of years ago.  That's where I learned about his collection. Such a historical haul.

That's a bass that... I think actually would've made a lot of sense for me. I wonder how well the bridge pickup approximates that EB Sting Ray sound.

That Epi LP is awesome. I can fucking smell the rooms that has played in. Reminds me of a gig in Des Moines - we had connected with a band from Iowa when we were in St. Paul and were playing a few shows with them going down I-35. Young kids, very Bible belt, from Ames. We rolled up to where we were supposed to play in Des Moines, and it was an extremely industrial area, Razorwire, glass shops, etc, not just down the road from a business or residential area but just surrounded by industrial shit. The guys from Ames wanted to bail, but fuck that, we found the door that we thought seemed right and went in. There was a guy laying on a couch playing xbox, looked like Jonah Hill with a heroin problem. "Oh.... are you guys for the show?" and pointed us down the hall, where there was a room that smelled like the yellow armpit of an old undershirt. Size of an average living room, no stage or anything like that at all of course - a powered mixer and a speaker on the floor. The walls were covered in bloodstained carpet. Ames guys were really pretty sure we should leave. We went to load in and there were some extremely bro looking dudes pounding Natty Light on a Honda Civic. Apparently we had a small pocket of fans in Iowa City, they had come down for the show. They all worked at bars and very easily convinced us to come play at "The Yacht Club" the next night, which turned out to be a pretty crazy night. Those dudes and some very crusty punk people filtered into the room, we played for forty five minutes of just people beating the shit out of each other, falling into us, grabbing the mic.

Man, that guitar just drips "house show". Awesome.

This is what "Almost Famous" would have looked like if Faulkner had written the screenplay and Tarantino had directed.

Okay guys.  I'm back after a Rick vision quest, where I found...this:

dsc_5606.jpg?fit=366,682&ssl=1

So, here's the description by the guitar shop:

Quote

This guitar is not a Rickenbacker even though it plays one on TV …. It’s a custom built one off from a french luthier named William Young who is a well known specialist in Rickenbacker restorations as well as custom builds. Since its build date in 2010 the tailpiece has been changed to a Bigsby. Its an easy switch back to the original style tailpiece if you wish but you would need to locate one. It is super clean and plays and sounds and looks great! If you are a Bigsby guy, it definitely gives it that “twang thing”. A very cool early Rickenbacker style guitar that won’t break the bank as the original Rickenbaker 360F’s typically sell for well over 10k. Comes with a hardshell case.

So for this copy Rick, which may be custom built by the guy in France (who knows - there's an FB page, but is it real or not?), they are asking $3300.  That seems like a lot for a guitar that ISN'T A REAL RIC.  But damn, it does look good.  I also found this on YouTube, that has to be this guitar, right?

I toss it out to you all.  What do you think a reasonable offer on this would be?  I'm confident in my knowledge of vintage prices and what drives value.  But a one off copy?  Maybe a good copy, but nonetheless.  And an altered copy (removed original tailpiece) at that?  I'm at a loss.

Yeah, @topochico actually found that for me on craigslist locally, so shout out to him.

My hope is that I can cover a lot of tonal ground for the variety of stuff I record with the active EQ and P/J pickup combo.

That's cool and all, but being some sort of repro, would you ever be able to get close to your money back if you didn't get along with it? Seems like something you could really take a bath on.

Exactly.  This is my concern, dude.

It's kind of the expensive version of a Warmoth.  With a Warmoth, if you have to sell, you can get back the value of the parts that went into it pretty easily.  But this?  Its as someone's dream that they commissioned and I'm sure paid top dollar for.  But unless you can find someone else who had the exact same dream and vision...what's it really worth?  Tough question.

Yeah, I'd pass at that price.

At that price, for sure.  But there's always a price, and I have to wonder how long it has been there at that price and what the real price might be.  I often find that items from estates are marked quite high based upon the survivors' emotional attachment to items.  Maybe that's what's going on here.  Or maybe, they're hoping for that one guy to come along.  But if they got a cash money offer, on a guitar that's just been sitting there, during a recession...how low is low enough not to leave too much on the table?

That's why I tossed it out here.

I used to only leave it out my pedals until I wanted to play. But now that the kids are a little older, I can leave it out, but need to to check the knobs every once in a while to make sure they're not all dialed to 11.

I can see where he's coming from. I ditched my pedal board and stomp boxes and got a multi-effects board (Boss ME-80).

Sound wise, it doesn't come close to the pedals I sold (TS-10, OCD, Supa Trem, etc.), but I just play in a small church worship team, and carrying 8 lbs is heck of a lot easier than carrying 35 lb.
