I really like that. What’s the verdict?

I haven’t played it enough to make a verdict, but here are my early impressions. It’s a really nice guitar. It feels good and I like the shape and length of it. I like the nitro finish. It’s pretty resonant unplugged, which I like. A lot of Jazzmasters need a neck shim in order to get the right string angle at the bridge which prevents strings from slipping in the saddles. I’ve read that Fender cut the neck pockets at a slight angle on this model, so no shim is needed. It’s set up well and plays well.

Not sure yet how I feel about all the switches, knobs and the lead and rhythm circuits. I like simplicity. I don’t need six different tones out of a guitar.

The other thing I’m coming to realize is that I don’t like new guitars. The pics of these old Strats aren’t helping.

Edit to clarify:  It’s not that I don’t like new guitars. I like this Jazzmaster. I’ve just gotten to where I prefer playing my older guitars. When I first got my 69 Tele, I thought I needed another Tele so I could save the wear and tear on the 69. I think I’ve owned four other newer Teles in the past couple years and ended up selling them all cuz I just prefer playing the 69.

I bought an American Tele with N3s a couple of years ago and instantly replaced them with some real telepickups, an old Van Zandt I had stashed away and a Pure vintage 64 neck. N3s just don't sound like a Tele, or anything I really want to play.

How do you like the Pure Vintage 64, DougO? I'm looking at either those or the Yosemite set to replace these with. I want bright, aggressive, ice pick atack in the bridge. Not sure what I want in the neck, but still aggressive for sure. Maybe a little surfy.

Posted before, but the guy who owns that Strat has this '60 Tele. Not the best pic, but you get the idea.

Told me he'd give me the friend price of 8k.

I do like the reverse control plate.

I listened to several online samples before picking the 64 for the neck pickup because I liked it for that. Good balance of playable tones, just enough brightness and clarity yet smooth, not muffled sounding like a lot of them can be, and not real pricey. It ended up being a real good match with the Van Zandt bridge. Not sure how bright the neck 64 would be, though. A lot of people really like the Richie Kotzen preferred combo, the  DiMarzio Chopper T with the Twang King neck. I nearly went in that direction, but I liked the smoothness of the 64 .

Otherwise, I haven't played a lot of Telecaster in my day, so I haven't personally tried many different Tele pickups.

Haha. I just saw that one today. I'm way overthinking this.

I did the same. I generally stay with stock pickups, but I had to swap the N3s out and get a more authentic Tele sound, since it was my only Tele at the time, and I wanted that in my arsenal. And already having the Van Zandt stashed away, I was happy to find something cheap yet good to keep the expense down. I was really tempted to invest in a set of Nocasters or something like that, but I had already invested more than I should have on the guitar.

The N3s didn't sound bad for a rock guitar, but just didn't seem like they belonged on a Tele, just kinda sucked all the twang out of it.

Check out Cavaliers. Maker is a poster on TDPRI. Affordable and loved by lots.

Van Zandt pickups aren't terribly pricey, either. They are hand wound. The pickup I had was one that came with another guitar, uninstalled, back on the 90s. The original guy's son took over at some point and is still going. They don't get a lot of buzz any more, but still great pickups.

And if you are adventurous, the guitar builder, repair guy at Texas Tour Gear in Belton will wind you some pickups any way you want pretty darn reasonable.

Is that a double bound Custom Tele?

1960 was the first year of the Custom, and Fender didn’t make very many of them. If that guitar is all original, $8k is a steal!

Yep. It is a double bound custom. He was offering me half what he thought he could get for it at the time. He’s one of those guys that if he can avoid the hassle, it’s worth it. Plus we've been friends for 30 years.

🤷‍♂️

I’m trying real hard to understand this post, Napoleon.  Help me out here cuz I need some clarification.

Are you saying that you wouldn’t have sex with Salma Hayek cuz she has weird knees?  Or that you would have sex with Salma Hayek, but it probably wouldn’t be that great cuz she has weird knees?

Is that what you mean?

All I know is that if I ever end up in the same room with that Strat, I’m gonna do whatever it takes to have sex with it.

Anyone else ever have those guitar sessions where you feel like you're inexplicably better or worse than usual?

I was jamming around Sunday night and it was some of the most technically proficient, melodic soloing I can ever recall pulling off. At other times, I go grab my guitar and it's like I forgot how scales work and I sound like I'm butchering a song on guitar hero, bending too much or too little, sliding past the fret I wanted...etc.

On a related gripe, I also notice that sometimes I absolutely love how my setup sounds, and yet every now and then, on the exact same settings, it sounds to me like I'm back in high school playing my cheap strat knockoff on a shitty 10 watt amp.

Exactly my experience with one of the "Elite" line Teles with noiseless pickups.

Very nice guitar.  My favorite neck of any guitar I've ever owned.  Sounded good.  Didn't sound like a tele.

I sent it back and got something else (ended up buying a used 1990 custom shop tele for about the same $$$... y'all have seen it... post 3950).

B-Bender Telecaster porn

These "Noiseless" pickups actually sound great, but somehow the neck one is hotter and more treble than the bridge. I don't care for the Strat pickup configuration on a Tele. I like Tele's over Strats precisely because that center pickup is always in my way.

This ones for sale by a friend. He brought it here cause he thought I may be interested, but i think I'm gonna pass. Extremely clean, like new. I'm sure he'd work a good deal if anyone is interested

I had a friend who had a Tele with the Strat pup configuration. Finally convinced him to pull the middle pup and put in standard Tele configuration, then buy a Strat. He never looked back.

I was looking at those Nashville b benders a while ago. I'll end up with a b bender tele at some point, although I'm still between gigs at the moment so not now.

I've decided I'm going to become a "thumb over the top of the neck" f chord guy. No problem playing it, but lots of unlearning to do.

I don’t have the baggage of playing an F chord as a bar chord for a number of years, so I have found that the F played on the middle 4 strings with the flesh of my thumb and the flesh of my palm deadening the strings.

Also, the smaller the fret radius, the easier it is to strum those middle 4 strings without hitting those E strings.

I've mentioned before that I made that transition a few years ago. Glad I did, but I still go to the barre when I really want to emphasize the bass end of that chord.

Now Im getting used to playing the G in the bass of my C chords, cause I decided I wanna be that guy.

I did something today that I’ve never done before: I sold a guitar. And if another guy hadn’t bailed on me I would have sold two.

Sold this unusual animal that I’ve just had sitting around forever:

Sounds like this after some upgraded Seymour Duncans:

And I’m trying to unload this guy. They seem fairly sought after amongst the Firefly nuts so hopefully I moves soon:

Man, the gold tops showed up again.

Firefly FF338 Semi Hollowbody Guitar (Gold) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HQJ3ZVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_pfetFbRQYX8MD

I’m tempted to order one of those too and then return one. The only thing holding me back is that I’ve read that the gold wrinkles under the finish after a few months. That would kinda suck.

Need advice:  I really need to get at least 4 guitars off the floor -- two electric, two acoustic.  Are there solid, reliable, will-not-pull-out-of-the-sheetrock/drywall guitar hangers out there?  Or am I going to be forced to find the studs and come up with some kind of horizontal strap that anchors to those studs?

I'm not at all against using some of those heavy duty drywall anchors, but I just don't know if they suck or not.

As long as it's not a Les Paul, I've had zero issues with drywall anchors.

In my experience, they all suck over time. Eventually the sheetrock pinched between breaks down and the attachment loosens. Then I just have a bigger hole in the sheetrock to patch. I would go with a cross support in the studs and mount to that.

Drill holes in the drywall and replace the hanger screws with toggle bolts?

Semi-hollow Tele, Frankencaster, and two dreadnoughts.
