Re: Mexican Fender Player Stratocaster
Fuck yes. Do report back as you get more time with it.

Have played it a little, but haven’t unpacked my SPARK yet after converting my new Kindle Fire 10 HD to a Google Play Android, so don’t have a sound reference.

TWO DEFINITE CONS (so far):

1) Some sharp frets, especially on the underside as you approach the body. (A little steel wool will take care of that, no filing really necessary.)

2) The Volume & Tone knobs feel cheap when turning them. The knobs feel like thin plastic and the turn feel doesn’t compare to the Tagima 530 that I bought for $110 on eBay (retail for close to $200). It’s a bit odd how cheap they feel, but I might not even notice in a week or two. The switch feels a little more fluid than on other strat style guitars I’ve piddled around with

So far I love the neck. I have to unpack some stuff to find an electric tuner, so I can’t say whether the intonation is on.

The color still rocks and the pickups totally look like pickups. (No clue about tones, because I haven’t plugged it in.)

I had to retune it a couple of times over 15 minutes, but that’s probably due to stretching out the new strings. 🤞

That’s the latest update.

The eBay Strat is probably a Mexico Standard, maybe an SE thing with the nice maple flame veneer top. The MX13 serial would put it in the 2013 range before they switched to Payers Series. I don't think Mexican Professional is an actual thing. Otherwise, it looks legit to me. It's not really buyer's market, though.

In past recent years I've seen nice Mexico Standards in great shape for just over $200 in pawn shops. But the covid has really messed up the used market prices in a weird way. For right now, not a bad price.

Just noticed the listing is also with "Rosewood board" which appears to be in error. It's a pawn shop seller, so...

I’d rather have Mayer’s ability, but White is more punk rock and more exciting to watch live. Both of them would be very hard to duplicate.

And a HSS Strat is one of the greatest things in the world.

Last night at the Isbell show he ran through lots of guitars. He started with a sunburst Strat with a white pick guard but then played a Tele, that gold Duesenberg he’s used for years, a P-90 Les Paul and then another LP that looked for all the world like the Red Eye. But I can’t imagine he travels with that thing, does he?

I didn’t notice what his acoustic was but it sounded lovely. Good show made great since it’s been so long.

I know Isbell has a replica of the Red Eye that Gibson built him in exchange for scanning the neck. I could also see him traveling with it though, especially for how little live playing he's gotten to do this year.

Whatever you think about Jack White, a song like 7 Nation Army, which becomes an international sports chant phenomenon, that's pretty fucking rad.

He’s right up there with Gary Glitter.

I’m gonna buy something that’s just my budget $600

The links above are still offering the Player Tele & Strat for $539, which is still less than $585 with tax. (If you go to Adorama, you won't get that price. You hav to use those links.)

I was playing around on my Strat last night and earlier today and the frets and fretboard are so smooth that the strings slide up like a skater on freshly Zamboni'ed ice.

The knobs & switches might be better on the Mustang you posted, but you can buy new Pots & Fender Switch for less than that Mustang with tax.

Still, the Mustang is shorter scale, so if you're thinking that you want thet, then there you go. Other shorter scale options in. your price range are the Duo-Sonic and Classic Vibe Jags & Jazzmasters.

I have a strat. I don’t have a mustang that’s the only problem. Is that strat MIM?

The "PLAYER Series" is:
-Made in Mexico
-Replaces the "Mexican Standard"
-Has modern-C shaped neck
-Has a glass on the from of the Maple Necks and an oh-so-smooth and buttery Satin Finish on the backs of the necks
-Has improved pickups
-Has slightly substandard pots & switches + harder top & bottom edge of the neck so that it doesn't quite compete with American Professional.
-Is about 35% of the cost of an American Professional with the links above

There is the TELE.

I like the Mustangs and Duo Sonics. That's on the list of... guitars that I would add to my collection, but I haven't *needed* to add to my collection yet (unlike a strat and a tele). There was in particular one recording session where there was a.... pretty sure it's a duo sonic (very slight difference in the curve on the lower half of the body, and on the duo sonic the bottom pup is not angled) that was laying around (at Trail of Dead's studio near Capital Plaza) that we made a lot of use out of. Here's some money shot with a bunch of goofy shit

I forgot about that song, I had to remember which one it was. It was a fun one

sounds a bit more neutered on the final track (at least at youtube quality) than on that studio stuff. but that was a cool guitar

So, my fucked up work schedule due to COVID has me waking up between 2 and 3 in the morning, so I tend to go plug in and play at those weird hours.. I have to say, though, that I seem to play much better in the middle of the night.

Got Jimmy Page's new book today. Wow! He covers what seems to be every piece of gear he used, with plenty of photographs and explanations, from the start of his career on. Really well done.

Here's some pron samples.

This book is amazing. He kept everything, down to his clothing and his calendar books.

Here's his actual set up from the MSG concerts in "The Song Remains the Same"

Yep. Plexis. A lot of current photos of all his gear over the years. It is a fantastic book. Lots of write ups about it all. $54 on Amazon right now.

It does feel like he's making sure he passes down all his history before goes. He was secretive for years, particularly about which Supro he used on Zeppelin I.

You'll enjoy it. So many little details. Shit like a picture of a box of nothing but NOS replacement tubes.

"Here's a box of vintage amp valves. They call them tubes in America."

Goes into what tubes he was using in his amps. Little things like that.

Yep. I was still living in Austin, CHIEF Jr. was a tike, and my folks came down to see him for the weekend. The Barnett Shale had been hot for about a year, and my Dad had been leasing a bunch of places and flipping them to Chesapeake. He had quite a wad of cash but didn't want to put it in the stock market. I suggested for him to buy some vintage guitars so he could enjoy them as they appreciate. So we headed to South Austin to hit up HOT Music and the vintage guitar place. Dad had always wanted a Brazilian Rosewood, Ray didn't have one but he had a custom shop blonde J-45 in Indian Rosewood, with gold hardware, it is an absolute beauty. The action was a little high, so he left it there to be set up and we walked to the vintage guitar place. Dad told the guy behind the counter he was looking for a Brazilian Rosewood, the guy was like "isn't everyone" and that was about as far as the conversation went.

While we were there killing time, the guy at the counter said to let him make a call, he knew where a BR guitar was, and he would make a call to see if the owner wanted to sell it. Said it wouldn't be cheap, Dad said he didn't care, call him. After about 30 minutes, in walks JJW with a case. Of course, I said "holy shit, that's JJW." my Dad just looked at me and said "who?" I rattled off about a half dozen of his songs, of course Dad didn't even know who he was. Well, he opened up that case, and there it was, Sunburst solid Brazilian Rosewood custom shop J-45. JJW looked at Dad and said he would take $4800 for it, Dad gave him 48 one hundred dollar bills.

So we head back over to HOT Music, and Dad tells Ray he had bought another guitar as well. Opened up the case and Ray immediately said, you bought that from JJW, and was pretty miffed he didn't get the chance to buy it first. He offered Dad $8k for it on the spot. I just smiled at Dad and said, looks like it appreciated almost 50% in 45 minutes. After that Dad was hooked, he bought and sold quite a few guitars over the next few years, but we kept those two J-45s, and a solid BR Yari Alvarez.

Dad gave it to CHIEF Jr. for his 12th birthday on the condition he had to learn to play it. I mean, where do you go from there? Like buying your 16 year old a Ferrari Enzo as his first car. We told him there was no way he was taking it to UTD with him, so Dad bought him a Martin. Spoiled as shit.

My copy arrived and this thing is something else. It's biblical, but with much better pictures.

$36 on Amazon right now and I mean come on. That's a silly good price for what you get.

Kind of stretching the boundaries of guitar porn here, but I really like this Steven Wilson song and especially Guthrie Govan's solo that starts around the 5:05 mark.  I recently stumbled on an isolated track of his solo, which is in the 2nd video.  Guthrie is fully capable of being a shred monster, but unlike most guitarists with those abilities he will keep it in check and stick to what a song needs first and foremost.  Here it is a really moving and melodic piece that compliments the song really well, imo.

I just got a Variax JTV 69. Some might consider it a toy but fuck is it fun. And no need to retune between songs that require alternate tunings!

I’d be interested in a more in depth discussion of your experience after you get some time with it.

Sure. Right off the bat I can say it plays beautifully and the tuning shifting works perfectly. The modeled guitars all sound a little bit too mid-forward, comparing to my actual tele and strat though.

But I get that is different than the traditional tele twang from the bridge.

I don't hear the "twang" when a bridge Tele pickup is overdriving a Marshall or a Vox.  I just hear glorious rock 'n roll.

Everything is mid forward compared to a Tele, unless you aren't playing a Tele on the bridge pup, like you should be doing. Lol.

Variax modeling a Tele bridge position is more mid forward than a Fender Tele bridge position.

Observe...

But I mainly got it to switch tunings on the fly.
