All these budget brands have their place, but I have owned 3 Harley Bentons, and they a project to get playing/sounding great.  Better than not having a guitar if that's what your budget is.  But if you want it to play and sound great, you'll have some work to do and/or money to spend.

You can get a great guitar that isn't a project beyond a setup in the $500-$800 range.  If you start with a $200 budget guitar and need to put $300 worth of electronics/luthier labor into it to play and sound like a $1000 guitar, why not buy a used Reverend or PRS SE for roughly the same amount and just set it up and play?

I get some people love the tinkerers aspect and the sweat equity they put into making a cheap guitar great, but I decided I'd rather just play.

Owning some cheapos did give me the chance to learn a little bit of DIY guitar work, but mostly I just learned that I don’t want to have to do that stuff. I’m going to put some 8s on the remaining Firefly to see if it improves (you can barely bend the strings with 10s) and then I’ll probably move it. I’m going to move my Squier Strat too now that I have a real American SSS.

OK, regarding my buddy's Martin 0-15.  What luthier would be best to evaluate and possibly work on this thing?  Austin is NOT a restriction.  Gruhn in Nashville?  Other?  I don't think he considers this an investment, he plays and it has a lot of sentimental value, so he'll want it to be the best it can be.
