You are being kind of lazy. If you follow the conversation from the beginning, there were two points and they relate to recruiting. First, we need to find a third receiver. We have Lewis and Washington who may provide what we need but they are untested. We have Quentin Johnson coming in. Not sure where we see Omeire. Personally, I would like to see if he can play Hullaby's role and move Hullaby to LB. Second, we have to find a replacement for Duvernay and Johnson. Eagles is going to be a star IMO and will add speed to the offense. Smith is a great possession receiver but I don't see the explosive plays that I see out of Duvernay. That doesn't mean that it won't happen. It is just what I see now. And it isn't a slight to Smith. If we want speed, from what I see on tape, I'm not sure if LVBS fits the bill. Maybe, Achane or Cooper (who has issues) would help.

I'm loving Duvernay cuz he is a stud.  That being said Smith is still a freshman so give him time, as in another year of S&C.  Smith is also very fast btw.

Just wondering if some of these posters have in fact seen a game this year or just reading the Statesman on Sunday morning?

Actually, he he was just reading the statesmen, he'd see that Smith has the same number of Touchdowns as Duvernay on exactly 33% the number of receptions, averages more yards per catch than Devin, and his longest TD on the season is in fact longer than the longest TD by Duvernay this season.

If he was just reading from box scores, the overwhelming evidence would indicate that Smith is a more explosive threat than Devin Duvernay. In short, he's not reading newspapers either.

Jake Smith: Unexplosive Possession Receiver might be one of my favorite takes I've ever seen. That's is BLISTERING hot.

A little strong, for sure. I don't think I said that he was unexplosive. He is the second or third most explosive player on the team, behind Whittington and Duvernay IMO. Maybe, it is because I am pretty high on Duvernay this season. Duvernay may not have great lateral movement but he is fast.

I guess what he's really saying, if he's saying anything at all... Is that LVBS isn't fast enough for his liking and prefers Achane for that reason.  Achane is pretty much an aggy lock at this time, so he's setting this up nicely for some woe is us, Aggy got the better player BS... Stupid fucking take on Jake Smith as a possession receiver.  LVBS is a slot specialist and very quick with some excellent ball skills and body control.  I'll take that all day over Achane

This was annoying earlier.  But now it's in neg territory.

You're ranking Smith behind Whittington, who appeared in a total of about 10 snaps?  Based on fucking what?

While Smith has scored several touchdowns where he fucking ran past people.

Whittington had one catch and cut that I can remember and that's it before going out injured and you think he's more explosive than Jake?  Based on what?

Why are you so high in Whittington? He's played what, less than 5 snaps all season and went out with an injury? Exactly what "have you seen" from Whittington this season to have a high opinion of him over Jake Smith? You eschew statistics, you're obviously ignoring Smith's HS film while not Whittingtons, you admit Duvernay hasn't got wiggle, you're ignoring the fact that Duvernay is a 3 year project getting to this point, but you don't take into account that Jake Smith is a fall enrolling true freshman with no college development to date...

Also, you then say Smith is the 3rd most explosive player on the team (behind a guy who hasn't played), but your original points were that you're worried about slot receiver and he can't make explosive plays?

tumblr_m7l7txXyde1rtzlzf.gif

At this point, just admit that you have a feeling that can't can't back up with any supporting data that is shared by literally no one else, or admit that you hate white WRs.

Duvernay was a home run specialist his first year on basically straight downfield routes.  He had an unmemorable sophomore year and then resurged as a junior as more of a possession receiver who could, if the right lane opened up, still take it to the house.  This is pretty much the only year where he seems to have put it all together to become a truly top end receiver.  He wasn't even on the Biletnikoff watchlist at the beginning of the season.

Jake Smith is a true freshman who wasn't even an EE.  You can be unconvinced all you want, but he's looking like a more complete receiver at this point in his career than freshman, sophomore, and probably even junior Duvernay.  His HS film is basically a montage of him taking it to the house over and over again for about 3-4 years straight and he was the Gatorade player of the year.

Jake runs an unverified 4.37 40 yard dash, while Duvernay reportedly can hit 4.30 and claims to be one of the fastest people in all of college football.  Duvernay is slightly faster, but either has the speed to take it to the house.  We've still never replaced Marquise Goodwin's speed.  Why aren't you worrying about that?

As far as receivers, I'm more interested in who can replace Collin Johnson.  I think we'll be pretty well off with Smith and Eagles, but Epps is the bigger concern.  If he can't cut it, someone else needs to step up.

This is pretty much spot on. Although, I think Eagles can be better than Collin Johnson. When I am talking about this stuff, it is with regards to recruiting. Whether Smith is the answer is kind of irrelevant as I was referencing team speed on offense and the need for more explosive plays. If you read back, I stated Whittington and Bijan will help in that regard. If we also get that out of our third receiver we will see the offense hitting on all cylinders. So with regards to recruiting, I still would like to get a slot this year at WR to backup Smith and if Smith is the answer at slot, we should probably get Jordan to return punts.

Thanks. Someone has to do it. I get tired of the non-football talk. So even if it is three pages of attacking me on fringe comments, at least it is football talk.

So you quoted a guy who was ridiculing your post, and are now saying you're agreeing with him completely and this (contradictory post) was your real intent the entire time? Bravo, lets get MarkStanco back here to tell us Van Fillinger is a fucking stud and Spider2yBanana to tell us that none of our RB recruits actually look like Jamaal Charles while were at it. Shit, CTJ can even say something incredibly nice about Drew Mehringer while we're at it.

You actually don't think the people on the recruiting board, where you posted this, realized that your post was colored within the prism of recruiting until you reminded us?

Here, let me just go ahead and put you out of your misery. We're chasing Dixon for the slot position this year, and it doesn't matter because if RB depth fills out then Whittington will always be capable of sliding into the slot position with Jake Smith, which is where Whittington was recruited, regardless. It's amazing what happens when you recruit versatile players you've recruited who can wear multiple hats. So slot position isn't really a problem, chooch.

Nothing says explosive like <10 yards per catch.  Not that Duvernay isn't a great athlete but that's not really the role he's playing.

X is a question for next year, and it’ll probably be Marcus Washington, although Eagles to X and someone like Woodard, Lewis, or Johnston to Z could work too

To me, this is the only actually interesting response to this abortion of a discussion.

I have a visceral objection to moving Eagles away from Z.  He's been a revelation there and is getting better every week.  Why would you move him?  Especially since his skill set doesn't appear to lend itself well to X.

I hope they redshirt Lewis and Washington and let those two duke it out for X next year.  Loved Lewis's run after catch against Rice.

Could be one of those Adimora/Owens situations (knock on wood it happens like this) where Washington starts out better, but after a year or two Lewis' physical ability is coached into something special.

It's just a potential option. To me, Z is the easiest spot to fill, while X is more advanced and difficult, and for some WRs, starting at Z to get on the field earlier before transitioning to X or H after becoming a better receiver is the likely path. In this specific case, it really just depends on how Eagles progresses, and how good the replacement Zs (Woodard, Lewis, Johnston) and Xs (Washington, Epps, Pouncey) are. What if Pouncey has a 4th year Chris Brown type of jump? What if Lewis or Washington has a Eagles type of sophomore jump?

Where it gets really interesting is going through scenarios where Collin Johnson can't go again against top opponents this year. What then is the best trio? I don't think you can try Epps or Burt at X at this point. Duvernay might actually be the second best X on the team right now, and Smith is a natural replacement for him at H, but you probably don't want to mess if a great thing of Duvernay at H. Eagles and Washington might not be ready for X, although they probably offer more than Epps there. Eagles to X could put Burt or Smith at Z. Having Duvernay, Smith, and Eagles as the trio would force defenses to play two deep shells, and open up the run game, but it might not be as efficient at moving the chains as other options.

It appears that Herman and Beck are finally using their recruited positional prototypes instead of plugging holes on offense. If so, we will be set at Z for awhile as QJ is in the Eagles mold. The big, jumpball X isn't Epps. If we need anything to sort itself out at WR, it's the future at X, and there's no shortage of good options.

I think the comparison you're looking for is Cook/Green.

Cook has weirdly gotten worse than he was end of freshman year. I'm hoping both sides of the pair succeed to the best of their ability. I would also like a slice of blackberry pie a la mode and a date with Olivia Wilde, but we can't have it all I suppose.

Inexplicable sophomore slump, like Trevor Lawrence is dealing with

I agree that Z is probably the easiest spot to "fill," but it might be the hardest spot to get solid production out of.  Hell, Eagles already has 4 TDs and almost 300 receiving yards there, already this year, where Duvernay had 4 TDs and 500 receiving yards in ALL of 2018.  Eagles has been a revelation at Z.  We should leave him there.

Herman has fallen over himself saying how Smith doesn't know the playbook well enough to play anything but the slot. The Epps experiment hasn't worked, fine, so make a change at X. It's not a reason to shuffle every position. Let the young guys make some plays and see what you have.

If there's one position in the offense that has shown itself to be the easiest spot to generate solid production out of, it's the slot receiver position.  From RHM to LJH to Duvernay and Smith, the H is the easiest place for this scheme to find explosive plays.

Well, he gave a football answer which I happen to agree with. If you go back to the beginning of these posts, my point was that we need to get more speed on the field and have more explosive plays. TE is a question mark which we don't seem to be addressing. Other than that the only question mark on offense is a third receiver and maybe an H back. With regard to wide receiver, I think Eagles will be equal to or better than Johnson. And Eagles brings speed to the field. All these posts with regard to Smith has more to do with me liking Duvernay this year than any negative on Smith. Richter correctly pointed out that Duvernay just broke out this year so Smith may do the same and Smith is already better than Duvernay as a freshman. I like those thoughts. If Smith steps up, then the only question mark in the receiver group that I see is a third receiver and quality depth. BTW, I also like your comments that Whittington could slip over to slot if needed and Dixon may be a quality back up to Smith. I may not be in love with Dixon but there is no doubt that we need someone to backup Smith.

Nah, I appreciated that. And obviously Herman thinks Smith is quick and fast enough to make people miss in space. Otherwise, he wouldn't be on punt return. But, when we run a screen or a slant, I feel more confident in Duvernay breaking it for a big gain. Look, I realize and am happy that Smith is going to start for the next few years. I'm not confident that he is better than Duvernay and will provide the home run threat that Herman wants out of the position. Either way, if he goes down, we will need a replacement. And speed kills so I would look for someone in this upcoming class to fill that role and I don't think LVBS is the one.

Jake Smith’s longest reception this year is longer than any Duvernay has had this year and the two previous. Plus, Smith has more yards per catch. You are being obtuse.

What if Lewis or Johnston (he might enroll early) is looking like a revelation at Z in the offseason? Eagles offers rare gamebreaking speed at X if he can take to the position. There's a long ways to go until next season, which is why I think the replacement lineup for in the event we're in a big game and CJ is injured is more interesting

Anybody can recruit TEs to fill their needs, but can they think outside the box?  One thing I loved about Mack was his TE recruiting.  He understood that real TEs were developed by spending a few years riding the bench as the undersized DE.

I get what you’re saying with Eagles, but I don’t think he can get in and out of his breaks well enough to play Z. I’m sure the staff could make it work this year if they had to because of CJ’s injury, but I’d like to keep Eagles at Z long term. He loses too much speed out of cuts greater than 45 degrees to play X, IMO. Johnston is a guy who I think could start at Z early and transition to Z later. Part of wanting to keep Eagles at Z is also his blocking. He is a dominating blocker as a WR and a big reason Duv has been so good on those WR screens.

We definitely have a bit of an issue this year when CJ can’t go. Hopefully next year Washington or Lewis can fill that gap, but you’re right that moving Eagles to X may be necessary if no one else can ge that spot down next year. I hope someone can though. I’m tired of putting guys in less than ideal positions because we don’t have someone who fits there. Thankfully, that issue is fading away every year Herman gets another class on campus.

The Epps obsession from (checks notes ...) yep, Drew fucking Mehringer is ridiculous. They're pathologically committed to a guy that has shown nothing but the ability to play really small for a huge man during game time. He's fucking brutal to watch out there. An absolute negative WAR example if there ever was one. We have some sort of craven addiction to fucking up personnel choices every season at WR. It took these stumblefucks 3 fucking years to realize, "Eureka! I've got it! We should be playing Devin Duvernay in the slot!". Motherfuck.

Washington should not be redshirting and he should be playing X for the duration of the season when CJ can't go. Epps is flat out costing the team with every snap he's taking.

Yeah, I mentioned that in a previous post. Either Herman isn't too concerned for next year at TE or we will look at transfers. I am guessing the latter since we are redshirting Liebrock this year. I know Herman would like to incorporate the TE more in our offense.

If CJ can’t go for an extended amount of time, I’ll be really surprised if they don’t burn Washington’s redshirt, but we still have the triumvirate of Herman’s bro’s coaching all of our receiving options, so anything’s possible.

To be real, they may move Eagles to X and give Burt more playing time at Z. In theory, I hate that, but in practical application it could work.

Eagles to X, Smith in the slot, Duvernay to Z has always seems like the most obvious answer to me.

Eagles won't be as good as Collin in the short game, but he'll be better than Epps. Duvernay is better in the slot than at Z, but I don't think the difference between he and Eagles at Z is as large as the stats would indicate. Some of that is Sam's progression over the last year. Eagles at X is the biggest question mark, but IIRC he did spend his freshman season there so he should know the position.

Eagles/Smith/Duvernay gets your three best receivers on the field.

You keep Duv and Eagles at their respective positions.  They are both playing at a very high level.  Marcus Washington is very talented and does very well at high pointing the ball.  His body is not there yet and not sure how well he knows the playbook.  You basically play the hot hand between Washington and Epps.  I’m not yet ready to give up on Epps.  Collin Johnson had a bad sophomore year because he was bad at getting off press coverage and took a big jump his junior year.  Epps is just a sophomore.  I’m not expecting elite level play from him but I don’t think he’s even close to scratching his potential.  However his level of effort needs to put him on the bench until he realizes he fucking 6’7 and should be abusing DBs.

If that’s still not working then Eagles at X, Duv at H, and Smith at Z.  Z is probably the easiest position and Smith is plenty fast.

To be real, they may move Eagles to X and give Burt more playing time at Z. In theory, I hate that, but in practical application it could work.

That is undoubtedly not the best option. We know what Burt is and it’s not good. Run with the freshman and trust that they’ll improve.

Fuck no. You don’t move Duvernay out of H no matter what else happens.
