Steve forgot to mention the part where he’s only averaging 127 passing yards per game and completing only 59% of his passes.

I saw him play twice last year in the playoffs and he looked like shit unless he was throwing the ball in the general direction of Achane.

I'm guess it says something like even though these coaches here aren't producing on the field, if we move them we could lose these players here, but the players could stay based on who we hire.

As good of a recruiter as Beck may be, nobody had to believe his job was ever too safe. Hell, no position coach has performed well enough to give confidence that they’d be here for any length of time. Hopefully, these recruits are solid to the University of Texas and may even be excited about new coaching prospects. The development of players looks pretty grim right now.

This. This right here is the problem. We don't have a single coach in which there is consensus confidence. Hand is the closest thing we've got, but even his unit has failed to develop in the ways we were expecting. Beck can stay on as QB coach, but we have GOT to hire a real fucking OC so Herman can focus on being a real HC. Who has improved this year? Name one unit. One. I fucking challenge you.

QB: Sam has regressed. Is he hurt? He has been indecisive and looks lost.

RBs: Can't say the unit has regressed because it was pretty close to the fucking floor last year. I guess we're just about as good as last year. Which was not good.

TE: Do we have TEs? They sure are on the field a lot to make it easier for the D to allocate resources to other dudes who are actual threats to be thrown to.

OL: Significantly worse than last year

WR: We have one good and dependable WR in duve. Just like last year. Eagles has showed promise so of course we bench him for a game and a half to punish him for expressing displeasure in his asshole dipshit of a position coach

DL: Still can't get pressure. I guess it's hard to do that when everyone on the DL is double teamed and the fourth person we bring is a safety 20 yards away from the ball.

LBs: I guess we're about as good here as last year? Still dropping our best pass rusher into coverage half the time on passing downs.

CBs: It's tough to throw three true sophomore CBs with very little experience out there all at once in the Big 12. Would have been nice to stagger it a bit more with some experienced starters. Cook doesn't seem as confident as he was last year. Green's been hurt. Jamison plays tough but gets beat a lot.

Safety: All of those dudes have been banged up all year.

In summation, we suck again.

It says even less, if you can believe that.  Nothing about which coaches could be moved, or about which players could be impacted.

I think an argument could be made that the corners have improved as the season went along and Boyce played less. It's difficult to really tell watching on TV, though. Add in the "tackling epidemic" and horrendous safety play, it's a moot point.

The Stampede: How staff changes could impact recruiting

Quote

Let’s address the elephant in the room. With the Texas season fizzling out in disappointing fashion, all eyes will soon turn to recruiting and possible offseason moves.  Of the ten assistants on staff, eight assistants find themselves up for contract renewal. Personnel movement could possibly disrupt the current recruiting class, but it is a necessary evil for the longterm health of a program. The Longhorns have had no problems recruiting in Tom Herman's time on campus, and his assistants played a huge role in that success.

Coaching and recruiting is what a coach is judged on within his job performance, and both areas hold a certain amount of weight. With only two games remaining on the schedule, we'd like to turn an eye towards the assistant coaching staff's performance on the recruiting trail. In this week's edition of The Stampede, Horns247's weekly collection of recruiting intel, we take a look at the impact assistants have with their commits and targets in both the 2020 and 2021 class.

Tim Beck, Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks

2020 Commits: Bijan Robinson, Ja'Quinden Jackson, Hudson Card, Prince Dorbah, Jaylen Garth

2020 Targets: None

2021 Commits: Jalen Milroe

2021 Targets: Quaydarius Davis

Impact: Beck has arguably been the ace recruiter on this staff from the moment he stepped on campus. Beck brought a stellar recruiting reputation with him from Ohio State where he helped the Buckeyes land several Texas studs like JK Dobbins, Baron Browning, and Jeff Okudah. Beck was the primary recruiter for quarterbacks Hudson Card, Ja’Quinden Jackson, and Jalen Milroe, and he was secondary on Bijan Robinson and Prince Dorbah.

All in all, Beck was responsible for the three highest-rated commits in the class of 2020 and four of the top six. Beck’s connections in Texas and Arizona as a former high school coach have been gold for the Longhorns on the recruiting trail.

Stan Drayton, Running Backs

2020 Commits: Bijan Robinson, Ty Jordan

2020 Targets: None

2021 Commits: None

2021 Targets: Camar Wheaton, LJ Johnson, Brandon Campbell, Jonathon Brooks

Impact: Drayton entered Austin with a huge reputation as a recruiter, but narrow misses and bad luck produced less than stellar results in the 2019 cycle. Drayton was responsible for closing on five-star running back Bijan Robinson and electric speedster Ty Jordan. Drayton has a great resume to sell recruits, but he’s had his ups and downs in his time recruiting for Texas.

His biggest job will likely be holding on to Robinson through signing day. Both Camar Wheaton and LJ Johnson mentioned Drayton as a big factor in their recruitment, but they still have a lot of time left in their recruitments.

Drew Mehringer, Wide Receivers

2020 Commits: Quentin Johnston, Troy Omeire, Dajon Harrison

2020 Targets: Loic Fouonji

2021 Commits: Billy Bowman

2021 Targets: Quaydarius Davis, JoJo Earle, Theodore Knox, Bryson Green, Blaine Green

Impact: Mehringer had a strong 2019 cycle, and he was a big reason that Texas landed Quentin Johnston and Troy Omeire in 2020.  Mehringer also helped to land Quaydarius Davis before he decommitted last month.  High school coaches in Dallas speak highly of Mehringer, and he’s been able to connect with several recruits on a more personal level.  Mehringer has potential to be one of the better recruiters on the staff, and he’s excelled at identifying talent.

Corby Meekins, Inside Receivers

2020 Commits: Quentin Johnston, Troy Omeire

2020 Targets: Loic Fouonji

2021 Commits: None

2021 Targets: Theodore Knox, Var'Keyes Gumms

Impact: Meekins’ impact is less about individual volume and more about the relationships he has in the Houston area. While Meekins is typically in on the receivers that Mehringer is recruiting, he’s also involved in one way or another with most recruits in the Houston area. A former Texas high school coach at Spring Westfield, Meekins is responsible for north Houston. Though his connections are valuable, his results aren’t usually seen as much as other assistants.

Derek Warehime, Tight Ends

2020 Commits: Kitan Crawford, Jaden Hullaby

2020 Targets: None

2021 Commits: Juan Davis, Lake McRee,

2021 Targets: Var'Keyes Gumms, Clayton Smith, Marcus Burris, Landon Jackson

Impact: Warehime already landed two tight ends in the 2021 class, and he’s been the area recruiter for any east Texas prospects on the Longhorns’ board. Warehime has a good reputation among east Texas coaches, and we’ve heard good feedback about his recruiting efforts in the area. Warehime also is experienced in JUCO recruiting and the Oklahoma area where he has deep ties, but tight end position usually features an ace recruiter.

Oscar Giles, Defensive Line

2020 Commits: Van Fillinger, Vernon Broughton, Prince Dorbah

2020 Targets: Alfred Collins

2021 Commits: Ja'Tavion Sanders

2021 Targets: Shemar Turner, Marcus Burris, Landon Jackson, Jordon Thomas

Impact: Giles had a big 2020 when he landed most of his primary targets, but he lost a commitment from Princely Umanmielen. If Giles holds on to Van Fillinger and lands Alfred Collins, he will have had a very successful year. Giles has a solid rep as a recruiter, but he’s lost some battles in past years that saw elite prospects go elsewhere.

Giles does have a unique ability to connect with certain recruits and he has a reputation for being a strong teacher of the game.

Jason Washington, Cornerbacks

2020 Commits: Kitan Crawford, Dajon Harrison

2020 Targets: Kelee Ringo

2021 Commits: Billy Bowman

2021 Targets: Tony Grimes, Ishmael Ibraheem, Hunter Washington

Impact: The 2018 Big 12 recruiter of the year, Washington has been responsible for some of the biggest wins in Herman’s tenure at Texas.  Washington handles the San Antonio area, but he’s also been brought in as a specialist on some recruitments while also handling his position.  Washington shined in 2018 and 2019, and he landed one of his top targets in Crawford in 2020.

Washington shined in 2018 and 2019, and he landed one of his top targets in Crawford in 2020. His record will ultimately be marked with the decommitments of Ethan Pouncey and Joshua Eaton, but Washington still has the chance to win a big race for five-star Kelee Ringo.  Washington has a reputation as a strong teacher of technical ability, and he's recruited well enough to be one of the strongest on the staff.

Craig Naivar, Co-Defensive Coordinator/Safeties

2020 Commits: Jerrin Thompson, Xavion Alford, Vernon Broughton

2020 Targets: None

2021 Commits: None

2021 Targets: JD Coffey

Impact: Naivar was responsible for stocking Texas with elite safety talent in the 2018 and 2019 classes (DeMarvion Overshown, Caden Sterns, BJ Foster, Tyler Owens, Chris Adimora), but 2020 was a year where he lost out on several recruitments that looked to be his.  Still, Naivar ended up with four-star Jerrin Thompson and four-star Xavion Alford along with an assist in the Vernon Broughton recruitment. Naivar has a strong reputation with the kids he recruits, and the lifelong Texan holds a lot of influence with high school coaches in the state.

CDC and BMDs need to decide if they want the absolutely stacked 2021 class to be a transition class or a new coach bump class.

Yep. Things could really freaking ugly with recruiting and transfers over the next year if we keep Herman. Not to mention a coach taking over in 2020 will have an elite QB to work with and a stacked 2018 class going into their third year. A coach taking over in 2021 will have a massive question mark at QB with a good bit of the 2018 class missing due to early entrants and grad transfers.

Also, people keep mentioning the buyout, but it’s only going to be $5.5 million less next year, plus any new coordinators or high level position coaches we hire this offseason will likely demand at least two years guaranteed, so the cost savings will be about $2.5 million at most. So unless CDC is going to take the position that finances will prohibit us from moving on from Herman for at least three more years, then the buyout amount is a sunk cost that won’t change much between now and the end of next season and shouldn’t be a factor in making the decision.
