I think Bevo is responsible for the worst take I’ve seen on this site. Can’t remember what is was but I have him on ignore.

It was on Jake Smith: I called him a very good possession receiver because of his good hands (not because of his speed). You misunderstood the point as slot receivers used to be one trick ponies but now you see guys with good hands, good quickness and good speed. The position has evolved.

Should be a DE, but he may not be ready for significant snaps by next year. I think Bimage and Jones can both provide some good pass rush next year.

Jones was a good pass rusher in JUCO and showed some flashes in spurts this past season.  He was just put in a bad position in the 4i when he should have been rushing the passer.

I would have to call this take stupid as well. In my opinion possession receiver is terminology for good route runners with good hands that lack yards after catch ability.

I think Dorbah will be ready as a pass rushing specialist day one

He’s like 210 pounds on a good day.  I think a redshirt year and putting him on the Vaughn’s diet plan for a year would be great.

Link to only being 210 on a good day?

He’ll probably be about the same size as Trace Ford, who was able to contribute this year as a true freshman smaller DE type

Dorbah holds his own playing 4I in 6A right now, and playing the edge is easier

I mean just google his weight it’s listed at 210 lb on multiple sites.  I remember over the summer after camps, services were down on him when his height and weight were much lower than people thought.  That’s when people started looking at him as a LB or A B-backer instead of DE.  He still dominated those camps because of his speed.  I think he’s an elite pass rusher but he will struggle at his weight  against D1 tackles if he’s playing with his hand in the dirt. He needs to put on a solid 30-40 pounds to play DE.

If he’s really only around 210 right now, about which I’m skeptical, then he only needs about fifteen pounds to be about what Ford played at this year as a pass rushing specialize. That shouldn’t be too difficult to add over the offseason

Didn't Dorbah lose a lot of weight when he started basketball season?  Thought he played during the football season around 225-230 range.

Yeah, he dropped down to like 215 during basketball season last year. If he does the same, then it’ll be hard to get up to a great playing weight by next year. He could be a pass rushing specialist at about 230, but with how many teams play no huddle in our conference, that seems like it would be a pretty limited role.

Yes, Vaughn should move to WDE in this defense. He's 6-4 250. People seem to be forgetting about Myron Warren as well.

Overall, that doesn't seem too bad. Hopefully, 2 of Vaughns, Dorbah, Warren, Ossai, Bimage, TQ, and Jones will show up. At least there are bodies. Cornerback will be okay but not great. Green can potentially lock down one side, though. Safety is strong. And I guess Foster and Overshown might move to linebacker. This will not be a D on the level of Clemson or tOSU talent wise. Tillman, Gbenda, Adeoye, and Mitchell. Ford, Hullaby. That is a disaster, Orlando. Fuck, we better hit the grad transfer market hard on D and the offense better score.

Stupid questions so feel free to neg: is it common to have a DC who doesn't recruit? For the life of me I cannot figure out why anyone thought that was a good idea.

Hopefully having a sound scheme and, what could be, an above average d-line can shield the LBs some.

It’s fairly commonplace in the NFL

Bijan Robinson and Alfred Collins were listed in this article for possible bumps to 5* at the All-American Bowl. If that happens Bijan would jump Zach Evans in the composite.

how Bijan isn't a 5 star in each ranking service is mind blowing

He is a 5* on Rivals, and the 247 composite. If he stays in the top 32 he will be a 5* on 247. ESPN will most likely be the one he doesn't get there on. They are very stingy on giving out 5* ratings.

Regardless of weight, I agree he can play an Eric Striker type role for us day 1.

The impact of the Yurich hire

With the hiring of new offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich done, we spoke with several coaches around the state of Texas to get a feel for his reputation and recruiting style. Yurcich doesn’t come with a huge recruiting rep, but I was told that he’s been effective in small doses when he does get into recruiting.

Bottom line is, Yurcich’s first duty is to elevate the Longhorn offense and recruiting will be secondary. “He’s fine one-on-one with kids and their families, but he’s here for his schematic ability,” one source told me.

Once the paperwork is completed and Yurcich is officially announced, he’ll be able to go out on the road recruiting. He will definitely need to put his recruiting hat on to lock in with the 2021 class and the remaining 2020 targets. Perhaps the most important question is where things will stand between Yurcich and 2021 quarterback commit Jalen Milroe.

Milroe was the catalyst for Texas’ recruiting success in 2021 during the summer. He’s also been the vocal leader in the class and a face for 2021 along with fellow commit Hayden Conner. In speaking with sources close to Milroe, I believe they are committed to the school more than any coach, but he and his family are close with former offensive coordinator Tim Beck.

Outside of securing Milroe, Texas will still need to finish out the 2020 class and get a jump on 2021. Texas currently has two vacancies on the offensive side of the ball at the wide receiver position depending on the way the staff is balanced following this turnover.

Through several recruiting contacts, I’ve learned of a list of assistant coaches the Texas staff is doing some homework on right now in preparation for interviews. I cannot get into the full list just yet, but I can confirm Jeff Howe’s report that feelers have been sent out to Kansas wide receivers coach Emmett Jones.

A former offensive coordinator under Reginald Samples at Skyline High and head coach at South Oak Cliff, Jones is the type of made man to make a huge impact in Dallas if Texas were to land him. Jones formerly served under Kliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech before making the move to Kansas to work for Les Miles.

After speaking with several high school coaches in the Dallas area, I was told that the recruiting advantage Texas could have in the south Dallas area could potentially be dominant with Jones spearheading the charge. If he were hired, Texas would be right in the thick of the race for prospects like Dallas Skyline wide receiver Quaydarius Davis, Garland Lakeview Centennial running back Camar Wheaton, and Duncanville offensive tackle Savion Byrd, among many others.

From what I’ve heard regarding the list of staffers Texas is doing the legwork on, I’d expect these hires to be geared towards taking recruiting up a notch while improving the overall teaching ability. If these early names are any indication, Texas will be looking to strengthen their in-state and national effort on the recruiting trail.

All-American Bowl primer

All-American Bowl week events start today and Horns247 will be on hand all week to cover it front to back. The biggest story we will be tracking is four-star Bastrop Cedar Creek defensive lineman Alfred Collins.

One of the few uncommitted and unsigned Texas targets expected to attend, Collins should be in for check in tomorrow. I spoke with sources near the Austin-area big man, and it sounds like the race is extremely tight between Texas and Oklahoma with Baylor also factoring in.

We’ll have a full report following check-in, but I’ve heard that new Texas defensive coordinator Chris Ash has been in contact and the Longhorns are selling what Collins can do for them in their four-man front. Oklahoma made a strong push over the last few months, but sources I spoke with still feel confident that Texas holds the lead.

Five-star Scottsdale (Az.) Saguaro cornerback Kelee Ringo will also be at the game. Sources near the Arizona prospect indicate that Ringo already signed his letter of intent and plans to name his school during the game on Saturday. Texas did not receive an official visit from Ringo before signing day, and we’re told the Longhorns won’t be the choice.

We’ll also have coverage of the four Texas commits in attendance. Four-star Southlake Carroll offensive lineman Andrej Karic will get to show his stuff in front of our national team of evaluators and would be my pick as a potential riser.

Five-star Tucson (Az.) Salpointe Catholic running back Bijan Robinson will also be on hand, and we’re interested to see him compete with elite competition.

COMMENTS
Four-star Highland Park edge rusher Prince Dorbah will finally get to turn it loose after playing in an odd front in high school, and we’re watching to see how he fares against the offensive line competition.

Four-star Shadow Creek safety Xavion Alford is expected to attend but not compete as he recovers from an injury before enrolling at Texas in January.

Ranking the QBs from Day 1 at Under Armour AA practice
VIP ByGREG BIGGINS 12 hours ago
1

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The first practice was Sunday under the lights for the Under Armour All-America Game and a couple of quarterbacks from the Lone Star State jumped out for us.

It was a spirited opening workout and the six quarterbacks threw a ton of balls. The rain held off and we had a chance to see the quarterbacks go through one-on-ones, seven-on-sevens and full team.

Here's our look at how the quarterbacks fared on day one and it's important to remember this ranking is based solely on Sunday’s performances and has nothing to do with recruiting potential. This feature will be updated after each day of practice as move toward Thursday’s game.

1. Hudson Card, Austin (Texas) Lake Travis – Texas

Card was the top quarterback for his Team Pressure squad and had a very solid day. The ball comes out of his hand so clean and he really throws a consistently tight and catchable ball. He was accurate to all three levels of the field, showed plenty of zip on his passes and throws with excellent timing and anticipation.

2. Haynes King, Longview (Texas) – Texas A&M

King was the top quarterback for Team Savage and looked very good. King, the No. 73 prospect in the 247Sports Composite, is a very talented player and does a little of everything well. You always hear people talk about King not always throwing the prettiest ball but he was spinning it well today and was right there with Card as the most accurate QB of the day. He looked poised and comfortable throughout the workout and

3. Jeff Sims, Jacksonville (Fla.) Sandalwood- Georgia Tech

Sims was impressive and had some of the flashiest throws of the day. He showed off arguably the strongest arm of the day and has a nice physical upside to him. He's rated the No. 206 player nationally in the 247Sports Composite and shows off the ability to beat a defense with his arm or his legs. He had some nice runs out of the zone read and has an intriguing upside to him.

4. Robby Ashford, Birmingham (Ala.) Hoover- Oregon

Ashford has a strong frame with projectable tools. He's the kind of quarterback who looks like a fit in any system. He has a strong arm, is comfortable throwing from outside the pocket and is a very good athlete. He showed good accuracy on the deeper throws and looked comfortable and in rhythm throughout the workout.

5. Drew Pyne, New Canaan (Conn.)- Notre Dame

Pyne was up and down a bit throughout the day. He would throw a good ball and then a bad ball on the next rep. He's a plus athlete but wasn't able to showcase his mobility much in tonights workout. As a pocket passer, he has always flashed a quick release and good touch on the short and intermediate routes and there's no reason why he can't rally and have a strong day on Monday.

COMMENTS
6. Chandler Morris, Highland Park (Texas)- Uncommitted

Morris struggled a bit to put with consistency in workout 1. He threw some good balls during routes on air but wasn't as consistent during 7v7 and team play.  Morris is the smallest quarterback in this group and his lack of elite arm strength showed up on the deeper throws. He has some dual-threat ability to him and good pocket mobility but hopefully shows some improvement throwing from the pocket the rest of the week.

Lol. I was coming to point out that line too.

VERY glad we are looking to do that as opposed to the opposite or just one of the two.
