How to appeal to reluctant Trump voters?

Hugo Stiglitz

Recommended Posts

Obviously the cult 45 clowns are beyond moveable but it is my view there’s a section of not as ignorant fence sitting voters that are persuadable.

What kind of messages would resonate with them?

Here’s a approach I’d probably roll with:

You won, you got the big win and stuck it to the people you hate but what have you really won?  Why don’t you want more?   What if there was a candidate that was just as committed except more prepared and not as petty or mean?  What if there was someone that strikes fear in the corrupt establishment and the 1% while giving your kids someone they can look up to for inspiration?   What if there was someone that fights for your kids to live in an America where quality healthcare and a good education are no longer unaffordable or financially crippling?

Because if you haven’t figured it out yet, Trump isn’t going to take you anywhere near that America. But that doesn’t mean you have to hate Trump.  He will still be around doing the same thing he’s doing now regardless of what happens in the election, he’ll be tweeting and playing golf as long as he can.

You know all the rhetoric about open borders and socialism is just a ploy to scare you into not voting for a democrat right?  Aren’t you tired of the bullshit?  Wouldn’t it be nice if we aspired to something other than destroying the other side?

The point is we could do better.  We should demand better.  Because America can be so much more than anything we’ve seen in the past but we’re going to need to make a change at leadership now to get it.  Trump isn’t taking this country to a better place and I think you know that.

What are the issues that caused these people to hold their nose and vote trump?

if it was crooked Hillary, problem solved.

Abortion seems like a non starter, that’s dogmatic and they won’t change, and the D platform obviously won’t change.

Gun rights and immigration?  Do these people believe that democrats want open borders and no guns?  Is there room here for movement?

Don't. Write them off. They can go fuck themselves.

Trump himself has already taken care of that. That along with Hillary not running means trump has no chance short of stealing it.

Seems like those saying write them off are missing the bigger picture here.  You don’t have to be mean to these folks and you shouldn’t ignore them.  You don’t have to pander with latent racism or lies either.  I honestly believe many of these people just want someone that will shoot it straight and listen.

Sure, you might beat Trump without appealing to these folks but your presidency will be much more challenging if you leave these folks behind again.   If you can persuade just a portion of them over while locking down all the democrats, your presidency would be nearly unstoppable and you can simultaneously end the Republican Party as we know it.

The goal isn’t just to win for the sake of winning. It’s to annihilate Trumpism and make sure it never comes back.

Evangelicals and Trumpkins are not reluctant Trump voters, they are his base. This is like calling aggy corp dorks two percenters. The reluctant Trump voters are the disenfranchised working class from the Rust Belt.

Bernie could do it.

He’s the 2nd best suited to do it IMO.

Warren has potential. Other than those two no other Dem is really targeting the the disenfranchisement that fueled Trump's rise to power.

Here’s the problem. Anyone who is actually paying attention and still supports trump at this point is long gone. And from a personal standpoint, this includes my own dad. He’s at the CNN made up trumps statements about Charlottesville point.

There are trump supporters who can change. But it’s the ones who are directly affected by whatever the economy impacts them type. If the economy stays the same so will they.

Hes still gonna lose though. He doesn’t have enough support to win without cheating no matter what happens.

So what’s their issue?  Jobs?  Taxes?

Open/porous borders (stop saying they're not for it), free healthcare for illegal aliens, Higher taxes on everyone.  So far these are the only things they've actually all offered.

Mrs. Warren has probably the only Realistic platform of proposals for governing for citizens, but her types of platforms don't resonate with voters on a level that gets them to pull the lever in the voting booth.

As satisfying as it is to say, that’s the wrong answer.  Or at least, it’s a suboptimal strategy for Democrats and will produce bad results for the country at large.

Trumpkins are hopeless and worth writing off.  But there are 2016 Trump voters and potential 2020 Trump voters who are very much on the fence, who don’t like the guy, and who are potential defectors. It’s worth at least considering how to get those votes.

You offer candidates who aren't pushing more and more to the left of center.

I don't think many people are on the fence at all. If they are, fuck them. They can suck a dick and get bent.

Perhaps show them change, maybe not call them racists. If they are one, feel free. Can any politician on earth reduce spending? Try acknowledging the good ideas working in the country right now. There are actually quite a few. Trump will take care of himself, don’t play his game. You aren’t good enough at it

Ah I see the THE DEMOCRATS HAVE TO MODERATE TO PLACATE ME crowd found a new home.

They have to appeal to the most voters, and most voters consider themselves to be moderate. Just left and just right of center. The present course of the DNC is much further to the left of center.

And the current Republican Party is as far right as one can get. You’ll still vote for them. Y’all NEVER say they’re too far right for your vote. Because they ain’t.

Dude, that’s JimmyJames dad you’re talking about.  Watch your mouth...

In defense of my Dad, as much as I somehow can, he somehow was aboard the trump train long before Trump proved to be a complete scumbag. He supported the dude even before he announced he was running. He’s a lifelong republican but one of the Ron Paul ilk. Trump was right in his wheelhouse. He simply can’t come to bring himself now to ever admit he was wrong. He never will so what can I do.

Part of that is he’s pretty damn old. Its like those telemarketing scams that called people on their landline phones back in the 80s when I was a kid. They preyed on the old, trying to scam money out of old people. Successfully enough to keep trying. In my opinion Fox News and Trump did the same thing to people like my Dad. I simply wasn’t paying enough close attention to it as it was happening, my fault I guess but was busy with my own kids and all.

I still love him though and can’t ever write him off. Its part of the reason why I’m not on the brisket train. Oh well.

Hey I get it.  This stuff has torn families apart.  Normally I’d give the stay civil speech but when the actual President is the one not being civil, it sets us all back.

It’s amazing how people think playing to the center automatically attracts more voters.  Our presidential candidates (especially republicans) have been campaigning to the center my entire life until Trump came along and blew that shit up.  That’s what made him a seductive candidate, his unorthodox “fuck everyone” provocative approach.

Authenticity carries so much more weight than ideology or policy in today’s politics.

This is the Politics Board.  The Common Sense Board is down the hall, across the street, well actually the farthest point possible in the universe from this place.

I don’t believe there are reluctant Trump voters.

Anyone even considering voting for him after the last 3 years isn’t worth it.

And I’m so tired of hearing why the shitty decisions of Trump voters is the fault of people who oppose Trump. And being asked to bend and moderate to placate their retrograde viewpoints. And no one expects them to compromise.

Just ignore them and wait for them to die of old age or diabetes or heart disease or opioid overdose.
