1st & 15 or 20 is the best way to get a drive going you idiot.

The eyebrow raising thing today is that Quinn wasn't much better in terms of pocket presence and the OL was honestly worse than the Georgia game. Some of that is likely obvious game script - when you're starting drives 1st and 20 it tends to help the pass rush - but they drew those flags too.

Good time for a bye week. Unlike Ewers I think the OL can get it together.

QE reduced the reverse bailouts from the pocket and I did see him climb into the pocket and deliver on-time throws down the middle several times.  He still was way too cautious and his deep ball is bad.

The O-line took many pre-snap penalties and holds, but the worst were the busts.  There were at least 3-4 instances where an unblocked defender came in while we were double teaming someone else.  Conner missed one, I think DJ missed another.  They weren't all blitzes either.  That's not a QB issue, or a lack of running game issue, it's a protection/communication issue in the O-line.

You could put Tom Brady back there with a defender in his lap at the go and he's going to have trouble (on THOSE snaps, not a get-outta-jail free card for QE's performance).

The one in the first half where the guy came right between Majors and Conner, I wonder if they thought Blue was picking up that man. It wasn’t like that was a delayed blitz or a well disguised play so I have a tough time believing two guys like 70+ starts between them just let a dude run free right between them

Blue ended up blocking no one and the guy flashed right in front of his face if I remember correctly.

That's what it looked like.

Pretty sure Blue blocked Majors on that play.

So, I really know jack shit about O-line play.

But, with the exception of Banks, I think all of our individual OL have been complained about fairly relentlessly early, and later, in their careers:  Majors, Campbell, Williams, Hutson have all been shat upon roundly.

I know that OL takes time to develop, which presumably includes individuals making improvements.

So, these guys are now experienced, and playing somewhat better than past lines, but are these really the guys?

Have you personally tried them both? Just kidding

Georgia has much better talent on the OL than we do, and they usually have a run first offense. Their run production really isn't that great though.

Same OL kept 2 first round draft picks completely in check @ Michigan.  I still think they can be the top tier OL we expected to see.   The pre-snap penalties are just a complete lack of focus and have been a problem all year.  The regression the last 3 weeks across the board has just been odd.  At least OU and UGA have really good to elite front 7's.  There really isn't any excuse for all the mistakes these guys made yesterday.  Bye week couldn't come at a better time.

Good discussion below

Go to 44:30, Brian wonders if OL may be playing too uptight due to jawja debacle.

Maybe Cam Williams missed his calling.  He'd make a pretty good matador. But hey, I'm not putting it all on any one guy. The whole OL has underperformed lately. Too many flags and blown assignments.

If that continues, and Ewers can't move better in what remains of the pocket, I have no problem trying an Arch package. And maybe a little more trickeration, while we're at it. (But save lining up Arch as a wideout for the playoffs.)

Switch RB rooms with Georgia and the Texas run game gets much better

I think people were being too negative about the OL after UGA when a lot more of the issue was on Quinn’s horrible pocket presence and Wisner not being a very good inside runner. The Vandy game wasn’t great, though.

Flood’s been here four years now. He should’ve coached up the guys he had or gotten better ones. There’s no excuses left for him in Year 4. The OL has to play better.

If only you had people in your life telling you how stupid you were being posting in every thread imaginable that Majors was our worst OL and had to be replaced when it was obvious both Guard spots were way bigger issues.

Do you expect Cam to return for another season at Texas???

He has very limited game film and now a big chunk of it is pretty bad. I’d be very surprised if he declares considering the opportunity he has to come back, get NIL money, and improve his draft stock after another year. The gap between first and second round contracts is very big. Unless he plays at an elite level the rest of the year, declaring would be a bad idea.

Tom Hart (SEC Network) was interviewed on the Aggy show today and was really critical of Texas OL -- said vandy was one of the worst sec teams pressuring the QB.

He was surprised how many sacks vandy had vs Texas. 😬

Rod said Vandy blitzed more against us than they have all season. They mimmicked UGA to the best of their ability with overloading a gaps and blitzing a gaps while bringing pressure from corners. Seems like that will be a lot of what we see moving forward.

Good news is by the time we hit aggy we will be really accustomed to seeing blitzes. We're about to get a ton of live game reps.

Put this on O-line bulletin board...

Screenshot_2024-10-28-10-46-50_kindlephoto-7914673.png.6c057d36e7634b512480bf2d8ecce0db.png

The two times the Texas Longhorns gave Vanderbilt the short field, the Commodores took the biggest advantage and tallied 14 points. The turnovers, in addition to 10 penalties by the Longhorns, either took points away from Texas' scoreboard or added more in favor of Vanderbilt.

With a bye week between this game and the home matchup against Florida on Nov. 9, the Longhorn offensive line must work on avoiding these easy mistakes so as not to struggle against the Gators and the rest of the teams in the schedule.

The Texas o-line gave up four sacks in addition to nine tackles for losses, and though that is a small improvement from the six sacks allowed last Saturday against Georgia, it is far from the standard head coach Steve Sarkisian preaches. This line is experienced and has no excuse not to play to the best level, and we know they can be better. In the first six games of the season, the offensive line only allowed six sacks, this number has almost doubled in the past couple of weeks as it reaches 11.

Sarkisian credits a lot of the issues to the amount of penalty calls the team had.

"I was getting a little frustrated," Sarkisian said. "It's one thing you get a holding penalty on a one-yard run, we were getting holding penalties on chunk plays, then you get backward. You get off schedule. I think when we're on schedule as an offense we're really good, and we got off schedule in the second half and things got difficult for us."

Texas was forced into punting four times for 145 yards, which was still less than Vanderbilt's five for 241.

The next two weeks will be crucial for the development of a solid offensive line, which must improve communication and discipline going forward.

Question (cross-posted from gameday thread - figured this was a good place to ask it):

Does PK not run a bunch of twists and stunts? If not, how can the OL prep for stuff like if they don't see it very often in practice? Same for blitzes. Obviously not calling out the D - they've been awesome! Just curious how our OL can get better if they don't see it live in practice very often. I know with upcoming dual-threat QBs that the D will face, offense has someone in practice simulate that. But how do you simulate what's confusing the OL if the D line isn't about those concepts?

PFF has Banks then Majors as dead last on the team in run blocking (among OL starters). Do our eyes agree with that?

I just looked at it and Campbell was last by a comfortable margin.  Banks is #1 in run blocking and overall.

But no the masses don’t agree because Conner was #2 overall.

Thing about the grades is they finalize at odd times and I’m not sure how many iterations they go through before it’s finalized.
