Pass pro was largely okay (minus a couple of blitz pickup issues here and there) but this unit should be flat out embarrassed by the game tape here. And the fucking false starts in high leverage situations are unacceptable. Disastrous overall performance today.

I thought pass pro was great overall.  Q had plenty of time on multiple occasions.

The run push however was pathetic, and we really need a coming to God moment from the OL in that regard.

Teams can cheat our run game based on alignment and slant into it. We started lining up in pistol and using motion to get set our RB in order to prevent them from doing it as easily. It worked a bit in the 4th. The real problem is why (1) we continue to ask our lineman to make blocks in space rather than fire off at smaller dlines, and (2) can't figure out a way to not tip our run plays. Our zone blocking scheme works great when our line is matched against power lines or equally athletic lines. When the other line is just quicker, the timing of everything gets blown up. It wouldn't be so bad if we could punish slanting dlines. For whatever reason, we can't.

This. Where were the gap or power runs? ASU's D-line was overplaying our outside zone all night and beating our O-linemen to their spots.

It felt like there were multiple times running between the tackles would have worked well. Especially a couple times ASU blitzed with no abandon like they knew it was a PA pass.

maybe we are tipping.

Doing a quick & dirty skycam rewatch and agree with a lot of the sentiment here. This team needs to be able to just lineup and move smaller defensive lines off the ball and instead the scheme played right into ASU's strengths. Line didn't run block well, but I think the scheme was the big problem in the run game. There were just so many plays where the Texas OL couldn't get to their blocks because of ASU's athleticism.

is there an injury update on cam williams for the cotton bowl?  banks a full go?

Hope they’re all injured, due to Flood sticking his foot up their ass.

that was a pathetic performance in the run game Wednesday.

Well I hope Sark stuck his foot up Flood's ass first. And Flood followed suit by sticking his foot up Sark's ass, because there's more going on than just OL guys not doing their part and they need to get it figured out.

Is it ok to talk about how our supposed OL wizard Kyle Flood took a very experienced and talented OL and made them kinda mid this year? And also the fact that apparently none of our interior guys are developing well enough to keep us from going to the portal. Or are we still doing 100% sunshine on Flood?

The IOL is developing, but they aren't there yet. Hayden Conner's best trait is that he knows who to block. Neto can drive block, but he misses way too often to be relied on, hence the portal interest.

The most important aspect of an OL is working together to handle the threats. They do that for the most part, just not dominantly. Things will take a step back in some regard next year, but I expect more physical dominance as the years go by.

We're looking at a portal OG, but the portal window is closed for the vast majority of teams. Pickings aren't great with most players already in the portal who are going to enter.  We probably need an interior guy, and possibly an OT depending upon what Cam  Williams does.  We need big improvement.  We can't run block for shit and pass blocking is not good against really good DL.

I've posted this numerous times and I'm posting it again, Conner is that huge kid on your youth football team that you tell to just try to get in the way.

They’re a veteran group (outside of Cam) and pretty athletic. That’s their main thing.  They lack the strength and physicality that we needed this year. Cam needs another year badly, both physically and mentally.

Getting Cam back with Goosby would go a long way for next season.

It’s been tough watching the OL with the expectations, and the talk of how big and great they are.

the reality was that they never really looked comfortable moving, or reach blocking. And they certainly struggled in blitz pickup for whatever reason.

too often, the quick feet of a DL player would beat our guys to a spot, blowing up the play, or the strength of a DL player would just overpower the OL. That became the number 1 way to beat us, because Quinn couldn’t escape and the run game couldn’t get going.

for all the talk of big humans, that is effectively all they were from guard to guard. They weren’t a plus in strength or footwork. They were just big.

DJ Campbell and Cam Williams are horrendously outmatched on the right side of our line. It's Georgia all over again

Williams is so sorry. He got owned on that 4th and goal play that led to the final nail in the coffin. The DE went practically on touched.

OL recruiting hasn't been great over the last 2 years.  Bad omen for the next 3 years.

Especially in the SEC. While our top two running backs will return and Arch will start, Flood will have to work a miracle to coach a decent OL to allow the playmakers to have space/time to do their work.  Georgia and Ohio State exposed the line forcing Quinn and the offense into a one dimensional unit. The offense was able to perform well enough against defenses with less talent than top rated teams, but this next year might not be able to be so fortunate.  Guess we'll know something pretty quickly since the opener is at the Shoe in Columbus in September.

I wouldn't consider Conner or Majors "big humans." They're more of finesse position blockers than anything. I thought our lack of a reliable power back was as big of a problem as the interior OL. It's why we needed to run OZ so much.
