Texas O-line talk

Coach pop a bitch

I'm still perplexed by this. Texas has an unnamed #99 lined up next to Banks on the left side. Jermayne Lole is the only 99 on the roster. Teams use DL as extra run blockers pretty commonly, but if that was Lole why wouldn't his jersey have a name on it? I have no idea who that is and why there's a player with no name on his jersey on the field. He tries to get to a linebacker instead of blocking Tuimoloau and Helm doesn't do jack shit and Tui makes the play. The whole thing is confusing me.

Wow…I hadn’t really looked at this play since watching live and all I can do is shake my head. Blocking just looks like ass and every coach should be embarrassed especially Flood and Sark. 99 has no business in there as he gets rag dolled. Hutson gets thrown to the ground. Helm has hands on no one. Majors gets stone walled and pushed back into the run. Connor gives no help to Majors and instead effectively blocks air as Banks pushes his guy out. Looks like Oklahoma 2023. They have to fix this shit and someone’s ass needs to get chewed. Go to a coach’s clinic because for 2 years this hasn’t been fixed.

This play is perfect for what I'm talking about. Just get your hat on a man and Gibson probably scores. The line seems to take on a person's of "I'm going to try to stop you from getting through me." Rather than "I'm going to drive your fuckin face into the dirt." Running is about toughness and attitude.

Wish people would stop saying this shit. It's not always about size. Conner Williams was a small tackle and would maul people in the run game. Studdard and Blalock weren't giants.

Nobody said always.

Connors problem is one of Size/Strength (and technique). His lack of strength at the point of attack gets him ragdolled.

Williams, Studdard, Blalock weren't giants but they were big/strong enough not to get tossed aside in college.

Flood needs to get his shit together...

ASU OL with a lot less talent, played much better as a unit than the Texas OL.  Really disappointing season for Flood's group...  😬

RB injuries and personnel were part of the problem.

Texas OL group was one of the biggest contributors to the Texas offensive struggles this season.

IMO our OL was the most disappointing position group for this 2024 season.  Flood had plenty of talent to work with -- his OL group significantly underperformed.

Who is giving this coaching clinic because we’ve pretty much whipped everyone else’s ass in short yardage the past two years?

Helm is such a terrible blocker (or he just doesn't care)... So many blown up plays this year I've rewatched only to notice Helm totally whiff on key blocks

Helm has reached favored player status.  I think the ineffectiveness of TE blocking has been understated.  There were questions about Sanders blocking last year.  Maybe it goes beyond the players.

Idk but I’ve had enough of poor red zone execution. And quite frankly, the poor execution of this running game in our losses has me concerned. So, yeah, learn something from somebody.

I think it’s absolutely worth questioning Jeff Banks… his ST were pretty bad and his TEs don’t block.

So why did we suddenly start running way more OZ this year when we've previously ran IZ far more?

I’m curious about practice allocation as we’ve seen fluctuations in pass pro and run game effectiveness.  Or maybe it’s pregame coaching/analyst allocation.  Too many wild swings.

the passing lanes he had that we never fucking have is the most frustrating thing of all.

That is because they don't have a Majors and Conner getting displaced backwards some yards every snap.

*Looks to see if he is in the Quinn Ewers thread*

People around here think that shit is normal but it's not. The scariest thing for a QB is a shrinking the pocket from the front. You can't tell anyone around here shit though. Glad you see the space and windows Will Howard had all night. That's what it is supposed to look like. We aren't going to do shit around here until our line is right. We have to be able to run the ball. Asking your QB to throw for 300 yards every game is not a recipe for success.

Because we lack the interior to move people. In IZ we cannot climb to the second level to create lanes. What ends up happening is we combo block and then the guys get stoned leaving their LBs free to make plays. This has been an issue for all the time Majors has been here. It starts with him, and then Conner. If either one of them can hold up on a solo then we can reach the second level.

We ran IZ last year with Majors and Conner starting. Wisner and Blue are both best at OZ and lack the size to run IZ regularly.

You can get away with IZ with less than ideal blocking if your backs can get their own yards. We had those kinds of backs in the past. Now we do not. Regardless. Go back and watch us run it against anyone with a pulse. And remember that was against a Big12 schedule.

I'm not saying Conner and Majors aren't part of the problem in the power run game. They are. I also think we've loaded up on too many 3rd down type backs and not taken enough guys that can run IZ and power through arm tackles. Same for not really having an effective blocking TE for Sark's entire time here. We've ran out a weird amalgamation of scheme fit personnel, particularly this year.

A few numbers.

Texas Longhorns were 1st in the SEC in yards per carry in conference games.  4.63.

UND had 23 carries for 64 yards versus UGA when taking out Leonard.  Uga had 29-62, net of sacks.  UND 42-116 versus PSU.

Ole Miss had 28 for 84 minus Dart versus UGA.  Uga 33-59 against Old Miss.

Ole Miss 32-85 minus Dart versus Arkansas.

Ole Miss 31-69 versus OU.

Ole Miss 21-70 minus Dart versus UF.

UGA 30-102 versus UK.  31-106 versus Tenn.  26-108 vs GT.  26-80 vs Bama.  Ole Miss, ND previously referenced.

Tenn averaged 4.8 versus Arkansas and lost.  They averaged 3.3 bersus UF and won.  2.9 versus OU and won.

Bama averaged 2.2, 2.3 in their losses to UM, Tenn and OU.

Oregon -0.8 versus OSU.

Several SEC teams YPC are increased by their QBs.  Potential positive impact due to extra blockers.  Also, there’s a number of poor performances from top teams. I’d guess the consensus is that all teams represented here have better power backs.

So better backs, better Olines, better running Qb doesn’t equate to the conclusion drawn on this thread.

Def agree with you 100% and it's worse than that. The backs can't run through arm tackles, the TE's cannot block, and we also have an obsession with receivers who are DB size and smaller who cannot hold up blocking on the edge. Couple that with how much we like to run bunch sets and you get what you see every week. The goalline play with Golden as an example, Bond every week, and why Bolden cannot get on the field with regularity. Last year we could at least block on the edge because we had physical receivers, and the combo of Helm and Sanders was better than Davis and Helm. We just do not have the tools to run what Sark wants to run. We took the best portal players but not good fits. Bond, Bolden, and Golden are all slot receivers in the league.

All three games that we lost, we lost both the rushing and sack battles. That's all you need to know. We have a guard and center who cannot hold up in the run game on one side, and we have a guard and tackle who cannot hold up in the pass blocking on the other. We have a single lineman who can do both. I said this in the Ewers thread but people saw it as an apology for Ewers. Think about it. Almost everything bad that happens in the passing game happens on the right side. Since it's fresh in our memories Campbell fell down and Sawyer came through the gap and batted a ball. We all saw the Cam Williams last play. When Arch was in there vs Georgia and got stripped it was off the right side. So it's not whether or not the QB can run, it's competent line play or not. In the end the right side of the line bit us again. Even Quandre Diggs is calling it out. If the line play is even remotely better we win both Georgia games and we are playing next week.

You ran IZ zone last year because Texas was in the B12, meanwhile every playoff-caliber SEC and B1G team has nfl starter quality 0 and 3 techs. And you’re not running inside against them unless your interior line is all day 2 players or better, something Texas doesn’t have. Thus IZ zone is off the menu

Also not sure why people are surprised at the run game struggles,  the production vs Bama the 2 years prior was similar to what you saw this year vs elite run defenses. And that was with the #1 overall RBs carrying the ball

Vs 2022 Bama 33 carries 79 yards 2.4 ypc

Vs 2023 Bama 37 carries 105 yards 2.8 ypc

I said Jones was better than Williams and was laughed at. I thought it was weird in the moment that people couldn't see that. If Jones is playing vs OSU we might be talking about how we should beat ND.

We ran IZ because it's Sark's preferred scheme. We haven't recruited to match what we'd prefer to run, particularly at TE and RB.

Spencer Shannon seems to have the size to be a force blocking in the run game. Lets hope he can at least catch a little to get on the field.

Rewatching on YoutubeTV…the first two sacks are on Ewers (the patented self-sack), the third is probably a split-decision depending on what coverage looked like down the field, and the sack-fumble is 90% on Cam Williams. You can’t get beat one-on-one there. That being said, Ewers had Golden running underneath (which looked to be schemed?) from right-to-left and he might have had enough momentum to fight to the end zone if he catches it clean in space. Ewers worked the left side of the field from the snap and there was nothing going there — too many OSU bodies.

The run game is truly appalling sometimes. There’s a play in the 3rd quarter that sums up the interior OL experience where the play is schemed PERFECTLY with Majors and Conner pulling to the left with one edge player to kick out (J.T.)…Majors probably could have chipped him to help Conners out before moving to the second-level responsibility, but instead it’s Conners 1v1 on the pull and he gets absolutely fucking smoked and Wisner loses 2 yards when the play was blocked up for 7-8 yards otherwise with no OSU players near the LOS on that side of the field. He gets swim-moved inside SO EASILY. The execution is just not there in the run game…the reality is some of these dudes are JAGs and it was exposed against our best competition.

If veteran 5 star Williams gets clowned in big games I'm worried for the later arch years when the slew of 3 stars we recruit are the new veterans.

Williams was not a 5-star on any service and was only a top 300 player in the country for one service.

He also shouldn’t have played Friday. I appreciate the effort but he was not even close to 100% and it was obvious.

It’s also funny to consider him a veteran when he started 1 season as a redshirt sophomore.

100%. He is going against a 5 star DE that is projected 2nd pick. That was a DL that led the nation in sacks and sack rate (11%+). Not sure what people expected, but I think most rational people expected the pockets to be messy. OL gave up 2-3 sacks in ~45 called pass plays.

Yes the blocking sucked.  But give yourself a chance and cut off right guard.

This isn’t a video game. Run plays are designed to go through certain gaps and the chance of recognizing a cutback on the 1 yard line with 11 bodies at the LOS moving forward would take special type of vision.

I will say that we have a RB room full of pretty average ballcarriers right now. If a run is blocked for 4 yards, they will get you 4 yards. If it’s blocked for 2, you are getting 2. If it’s not block at all, they aren’t making things right for a tough earned 2 yards. I respect Tre Wisner’s toughness and maybe he beefs up some in the offseason but he just lacks the physical tools you’d typically see in a high-end SEC RB. Jaydon Blue is a scat back who you can barely trust to carry the ball and Gibson is the most physically imposing but is a freshman with ball security concerns. I think we squeezed almost everything we would out that room this year considering the injuries.
