Happy birthday David Sanborn (7/30). I had to run to the store for bananas and peppers (not banana peppers) this afternoon and heard about it on Jazz Sunday on WCBE.

I’m neutral on Sanborn. I don’t dislike him but I wouldn’t say I’m a fan. He’s fine. It turns out we share a birthday, though, so here’s to ya, Dave.

Caught some Ella.

This was new to me. Pretty cool. I thought it was interesting.

And now happy birthday Kenny Burrell (7/31). He’s still alive and kickin’ at 92.

That brought me home.

I heard him play live in 2020 right before Covid started.  He’s lost most of his chops, it was almost painful to watch considering how explosive he used to be.  I’m more of a straight ahead jazz fan, but I had to see Sanborn at least once!

Great performance.  This was in Berlin, but same crew.  Alan Dawson steals it.

Completely agreed on the album I linked.    Was blown away by it.

Somehow I've been sleeping on Hank Mobley my entire life. Like, I knew of him of course, just never dug in before. Bummer because I've missed out all these years, but great because now I can go through the whole damn discography and it's all fresh.

Love Mobley's tone and particularly this album which was recently reissued as a Blue Note Classic.

Don't miss his work as a sideman.  Horace Silver's 6 Pieces of Silver is great.

Have any of you fine gents read a good book on the making of Kind of Blue? I was thinking about making that a book I read next month to celebrate the 65th anniversary of my favorite jazz album. I've heard good things about the Ashley Kahn book about the making of it. There's also a new book by the Sinatra biographer James Kaplan that focuses on Miles, Coltrane, and Evans called 3 Shades of Blue.

Different strokes I guess, but I find that unlistenable.

To be fair, I tuned into her more recent stuff, and she is indeed, very talented.  Clearly channeling Amy Winehouse.

On the subject of kickass female leads, here's a new favorite of mine:

Ha, I did the same thing. Sounded like Adele Winehouse to me.

I hear you.  The point is how many ten years could ever sing like that?  And it as definitely jazz which is the theme here.

Her newer stuff keeps getting better and she’s obviously had jazz influences as well as artists like Adele and Amy Winehouse.  She did a cover of You Say at 15 that’s unbelievable.  Personally I think she’ll become a huge star.  Her parents managed and limited her career but she’s about to turn 19 and is now doing original music to go with the covers.

Huntertones... I posted a cover on the covers thread. Great sound and some really tight playing.

This is what happens when you let your trombone player become a human beatbox and your trumpet player picks up a sousaphone 🤣🤣

That's Jon Lampley on the trumpet.  He's on Colbert's Late Show band and works with Cory Wong as well.

There's a cool thing going on right now, in that there's about 30 or 40 musicians all floating around with different projects within the Jazz/Pop/Funk fusion wave.

Here's Jon with Dirty Loops.

Honestly, I wish they wouldn't.  It smacks of being groomed for stardom.  Maybe I'm wrong.  I wish parents would just let their kids feel out different musical avenues along with theater, sports, whatever.  Breadth is as important as chops at that age.

But, as was said, different strokes.  Some kids are super focused, maybe she is too.

She was exposed to talent shows at a very young age.  It seems that when it was apparent that fame was coming her family really limited her exposure to mostly doing YouTube videos.   She signed with Republic but releases were limited.  She's 19 now so if her career takes off now if the time though her style isn't what one would consider modern music IMO.  She also doesn't sound anything like that now.

There seems to be a great team and structure around her.  She works with Toby Gad a lot and he has an impressive catalog.  Jimmy Z plays sax at many of her performances.   It will be interesting to see where the career goes of someone who was discovered at the age of 7.  She's now 19.
