Rolling Stone gave the solo album 3 Stars.

I'm partial to Foxes In The Snow, Bury Me, Ride to Roberts (hell for the guitar playing alone), Gravelweed.

I could hear someone like Roy Acuff(well not anymore) singing Don't Be Tough

That Rolling Stone review misses the point of a few songs - particularly the title track.

That song is not a celebration - it's the narrator acknowledging he's a fiendish piece of shit.  Which is why it's great.

I really haven’t paid much attention leading up to this. Giving it a first listen now and am enjoying it - i like him with just the guitar. Some of his full band recordings sound really tame to me, the stripped down thing works well. Anyways, enjoying this. I had to google what guitar he’s playing and as I suspected it’s a little Martin. Didn’t pick up that it was all hog but apparently it’s a 1940 o-17. Here’s a picture of one. I know this isn’t a guitar thread but it sounds nice and now I’m going to have to pull my ooo-15m back out.

i enjoyed gravelweed and eileen the most the first time or two through.

couldn't help but laugh when "don't be tough" played and i thought, this is just additional verses to "cast iron skillet." different tempo but similar melody and the exact same lyrical song.

Don’t Be Tough sounds like Prine to me, but I can’t decide if it’s All the Best or Souvenirs

I found this album over the weekend on the apple new Americana playlist and really like it. A little different but I think some of y’all will dig it. A bit of an MJ Lenderman feel.

Seconded. I found out about them at some SXSW event in a parking lot last year - not sure exactly where (drunk) but was an enjoyable show. Believe they are from Asheville so the MJ Lenderman comps are not totally out of left field.

Took me a couple of listens through the new Isbell album for it to really click, but damn this is good stuff.  I don't think there is a skippable song on the album and I like them all more each time I hear them.

I do think I prefer the divorce songs to the love songs, in general.  Although "Ride to Roberts" and "Wind Behind the Rain" are both pretty great.  The love songs aren't bad by any stretch, but IMO it's never been his biggest strength as a writer ("Cover Me Up" and "Goddamn Lonely Love" being notable exceptions).

"Bury Me" really stands out as wholly unrelated to anything else.

He's definitely in a high point of his career lately.  As is well documented in this thread, I wasn't a fan of much post Southeastern stuff until Weathervanes.  But damn, he's been writing some of his best songs recently.

I'll say it.  His schtick is old.  I can't listen to him anymore.

I still like his music but you're not wrong and that was kinda my point. He's at risk of overexposure by releasing an album every 6 months or whatever.
