The dead silence as the ball went up in the air and seemingly hung for an eternity until it went over the crossbar and the ensuing eruption of noise in the stadium, is still one of my favorite memories at DKR.

That looks like the Zapruder film it's so old.

Are you suggesting there was a second kicker?  I mean, the ball was "up...and to the right."

I was there! Something like a “Randall’s Grocery” $5 ticket in the North end zone. I remember that I needed to get to work at the Williamson Co. Jail, in Georgetown, by 4:00!!
I still had the drive, plus changing into my uniform, but it was worth the wait!!!

Even though he kicked it into the South EZ, it felt like the wind was definitely against him. I remember the hype of the “Barber Brothers” heading into the game. What a way to start the season!

If any of your”Surly Bastards” got checked into the “Georgetown Hilton” b/t 95-97, I probably checked your dumbass in!

Friday and Saturday night were definitely entertaining! I knew then that I never wanted to be on the other side of the bars!

His pregame was astonishing, not surprised he had the career he had. Also heard stories of how much he practiced in high school, that people thought he was strange. Born to kick the hell out of a ball.

What?

Well, he WAS with the Chargers last season.  As a kickoff specialist in the playoffs.  So I mean it's almost the same as being a future HOF'er!

The kick against Virginia was the greatest kick I ever saw or ever will see. It was 50 yarder, not that big of a deal, but into a straight on 30-35 mph wind. Impossible.

The video doesn’t do it justice. I had a perfect view from the goal line and the ball was going backwards when it hit the ground. Nobody thought he would make it.

I was there and from where we were sitting (in alumni side with pretty good seat thanks to my friend's dad) it looked like the ball went up and then came down and almost a straight down angle and just oh so barely inching past the bar as it shot straight down.  I know from the replay it wasn't that razor thin close, that perception made the moment that much more amazing to witness.  I thought that was also a game where we rushed the field but maybe it was after another game that season (hey...it was the 90s....).

Awesome moment and awesome career.

I broke my arm the week before that game, which ended my sophomore season so my dad took me to the game to cheer me up. Such a fun team.
Wait, I've seen you post for a hundret years, never knew you were on the team. That's pretty cool (if I am reading your post correctly)

Phil was my last man standing, the last player from my time on the 40 acres still playing football.  Had a class with him the 1995 season and I remember shortly after the Virginia game he tweeked his knee and came into class on crutches and wearing a full leg brace.  I remember several of us freaking out at that.

I think he told us he should be fine a little bit so we calmed down a bit, after at the time we thought he was a huge weapon for the team.... we hadnt fully understood that Priest and Ricky were gonna wreck shop the rest of the year

Anyone who watched him kick multiple 50+ yd, last second game-winning fgs in high school knew he was going to be one of the best kickers to ever set foot on campus.  He lived up to the hype.  It’s a shame he never had the opportunity to make more meaningful kicks in college or the NFL, because he would’ve nailed every one.  Happy trails Phil.

I was one of the Texas Football beat writers for the Daily Texan that year. I'm one of those people behind the goal post (I think) in the replay. That's the angle where I watched the kick from. I remember thinking it was coming straight down on us and I could reach out and catch it. Unbelievable kick. What a fun season that was -- until the Sugar Bowl.

I was a part time computer tech at The Logic Approach on South Lamar at the time, whilst continuing my labors as a CS student. I was listening on the radio, and got mad when they sent Phil out. No one could kick straight on into that fresh gale. Surely, letting James heave one to the endzone stood a better chance.

Everything went dead silent once Phil kicked it. Then I heard, "It's goooooooooooooood!!!". I swear it took 5 seconds to register in my brain!

I saw Phil a few weeks ago out at ATT stadium. At first I didn't recognize him. He sticks out from most of the former NFL players because he is one of the happiest people you will ever meet. Bald as a cue ball, but one of the happiest people you will ever meet.

I remember hearing that Phil had been a kicker and an OL at Lake Highlands. So when he got to Texas, he kept working out with the OL there, too. Always thought that was awesome. He must have looked like a dwarf.

A buddy of mine knew him and his family from when he lived in Corsicana.  Say he’s a great guy.

Man, he’s going to have one hell of a pension given his years in the league.  And he played so long he doesn’t have to wait as long as most.

He still looks like a dwarf.

A rich, happy, cheerful, dwarf who doesn't limp when he walks, doesn't have his brains scrambled, and has a big, fat NFL pension waiting on him.

The worst part is that if I ever found out he was banging my wife, my only response would be to ask her to invite him over for dinner so I could bullshit with him.

My bet is he gets a job on the studio team of either a college or pro telecast and kicks ass. He is a genuinely nice guy and has a ton of stories to share from his playing days at both levels.

Phil was a Playboy All-American, wasn’t he?

And I think he did not go to the photoshoot for that.  Because of his values or something?  Or maybe I'm confusing him with somebody else.

It didnt just hang.  If you were there, and I was, it sort of backpedaled.  That was the craziest kick, short of Garo Ypremian's "Non-kick" debacle that any kid of the 70's or 80's remembers from the old NFL film.
