A handful of wildcat carries/play #8s a game may be the answer. Unfortunately, I think he really needs a redshirt season.

He could play in 4 games and still redshirt. I hope we don't need him at all but if we do then I at least hope we don't need him until the end of the season.

Jaren apparently benched 345 in high school, of course the bar doesn’t have to go far. He’s a little bad ass in these vids as a 5’4” RB. Would be fun if he ever got in a game. Could the defense find him?

Kid looks like a little DJ Monroe starter kit.

Problem would be pass pro, though I don’t doubt he’d stick his nose in there and do his best.

The other wall on, if he’s really 200 lbs, should hold up better when blocking.

In my “every white receiver reminds me of Steve Largent” mindset, I will admit I’ve wondered if Jake Smith has a little Christian McCaffrey in him (NTTAWWT). And he’s apparently a legit 5’11-6’, 200ish, so decent size to go with the speed.

Bro, do you even Jordan Shipley?

I'm not overly *knocks on wood* concerned with RB depth at this point. You've got 3 guys there right now and a couple of receivers that will get motioned in the backfield which when thrown, is like a running play.

People are underselling Young. Some of "those carries" people want taken away from Sam are going to go to 32. He runs hard. People forget how he's not afraid to crash dummies and did so last season. Plus, if hell freezes over and we run 20 personnel, who do you think that 2nd back would be?

Also, I really hope that quote from Orlando about Shackleford (Roach and Johnson) was true. That would mean more often than not he's winning his share of battles against Coburn, Wilbon, Ojomo and others. That'll be the best Shack will face all season sans LSU and hopefully bowl game(s).

Best case scenario, no, but currently our RB2 is a true frosh, and I've never seen DY run for anything more than what was blocked.

I think we'd prefer not to have to experiment doing things like lining up Smith at RB (even though he was great there in HS)

Obviously Keontay is out in this hypothetical.

Rewatch the Mizzou bowl game.  DY ran for plenty more than what was blocked, and don't forget not much was getting blocked by that OL.

He just need to hold on to the ball.

Yeah he ran for a whopping 48 on 12 carries.

What are you talking about? His receptions in that game?

First run of that game - gains a few yards after contact.

Second run of the game - does a nice job finding the hole and falls forward for 2-3 yards:

Third run of the game - runs into a wall of defenders; still manages to fall forward:

Fourth run of the game - trucks a dude:

Fifth run of the game - runs through a tackle for a first down:

Nice job parroting back the box score, though.

I don't know about quit, and maybe it's a bit harsh to say, but kind of turning out to be a waste of a scholarship.

To add, our depth at RB just got really really shitty. Keontay needs to stay healthy.

I don’t think anyone expected Kirk to add to our depth. Most everyone called it that he wouldn’t make it out of the first week or first contact

Daniel Young would be best playing a similar role that Dimitri Flowers played at ou. Flowers had 36 carries at ou, but 54 receptions for 886 yards and 13 TDs. A hybrid, FB/RB/TE.

agreed.  if he can do some lead blocking and keep the D honest with his receiving he can add value.

Ivan took a wheel route 60 yards for a TD vs UNC. Plus I seem to recall he returned a kickoff for a Td (could be mistaken about that).

You’re probably thinking of Victor Ike.

Ivan Williams spent one fine evening running roughshod over the UNL defense of the PA pass from Simms.

The ole Ivan Williams bit.

lol.  Fair enough.  I thought Ivan's problem, and Ike's, was that they felt they should be stars and were disgruntled.

I don't think DY is RB1 but my expectation would be that if we HAD to play him there he could churn out 3-4 yd per carry behind this OL (and most importantly earn some of the tough yards).   That would be enough given our other weapons except against our best competition.

DY is serviceable IF he's not fumbling the ball. If he gets more than 6 carries in a game that's not a blow out we're fucked
