I don’t care what position you call Foster.  I call him a football player who can run and knock the fuck out of you.

Where it's somehow 'targeting' to hit a guy running high with the ball.

Defensive lineman do it to offensive linemen every play. Knock one mouthpiece out of a pussy "star" reciever and everyone loses their minds!

Challenge for students this year is the South EZ construction. They did a survey with students and rather than be in one strip running from upper to lower deck the students opted to keep where they were on the East side currently and then move to the wedge on the NE side, lower level.

There weren't many season ticket holders there and the ones that were were relocated.

End of the day though there are fewer seats for students overall this year.

Targeting smargeting, whatever. The NCAA has pussfied football. If it even looks like targeting it's going to be called. If the helmet in any way makes 1st contact it's gonna get called, like it or not.

We're going to have to acknowledge that hits to the head will end football.

Right now, the sport of American football is under the microscope as causing severe brain injuries that can cripple a person for life. Insurers are terrified that this is the next asbestos or similar payout. They don't want to underwrite football and its risks. Football is responding by eliminating, to every degree possible, hits to the head and head area. If the sport did nothing, it would be trivial for a plaintiff to say, "They knew it caused problems, yet they allowed it to continue!".

Intent of the player doesn't matter. Football at all levels has to show focus on removing head contact from the game, or else the game will evaporate overnight. Foster did not "target" the head, but he hit it pretty good. It was a football play, and he'd do it 10 out of 10 times again.

It's an unfair punishment to the player, but we're going to have to simply accept that players unlucky enough to be placed in that position will be ejected. Otherwise, our saturdays will be spent watching "Fortnight".

I think it was the Oklahoma game last year - we get popped for targeting when the replay clearly showed zero contact with the head - Clearly !!  About 10 minutes later Du or LJH takes a hard shot to the side of the head - great example of targeting.  Not a flag on the field....frustrating

There's no question that Foster hit him above the shoulders / in the head / helmet to helmet, but the question is whether the player was defenseless. I don't see how, by definition, he was defenseless:

  Quote

 Defenseless player (Rule 2-27-14):

  • A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass.
  • A receiver attempting to catch a forward pass or in position to receive a backward pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier.
  • A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return.
  • A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick, or one who has completed a catch or recovery and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier.
  • A player on the ground.
  • A player obviously out of the play.
  • A player who receives a blind-side block.
  • A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward progress has been stopped.
  • A quarterback any time after a change of possession.
  • A ball carrier who has obviously given himself up and is sliding feet-first

None of those apply. No defenseless player = no targeting. Bad call.

There are two rules related to targeting that result in ejection. Only one of them is about a defenseless player. The other is rule 9-1-3 targeting and making forcible contact with the crown of the helmet

That's the first time I've heard an extended interview with the young man and I'm very impressed.

Huge things in his future if he continues to work hard and stays humble.

Here's the actual targeting rule. Like @GW Hayduke said, it doesn't require a defenseless receiver. I've bolded the parts that show why BJ's hit was targeting. It's textbook targeting in literally three different ways.

ARTICLE 3. No player shall target and make forcible contact against an opponent with the crown of his helmet. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul. (Rule 9-6) (A.R. 9-1-3-I)

He did not target with the crown of his helmet. He went in with his left shoulder into the guy's right arm.
