How the hell do we end up with only 1-2 healthy RB every single year.

Well lets see..

Carter and Porter transferred

Kirk Johnson is made of glass

Trey Watson graduated

Derrian Brown had a freak tragedy happen that almost killed him

With JWhit moving to RB, we would have had 2 incoming freshmen RB's plus Jake Smith as a gadget back had it not been for Brown's condition.

We are expected to sign two more incoming RBs this year, and maybe just maybe might get Derrian Brown back at some point. Next year we should be in a much better situation.

Limited depth and bad luck??

With Young having a high ankle sprain, we’re already down to only Ingram and Whittington as true RBs for most of the year. Drayton’s done well (at his position only) in the 2020 cycle, but man he’s really fucked up every other year and has left us in a terrible spot for this season.

2017: Took Toneil Carter over Eno Benjamin, who ran for over 1,600 yards last year.

2018: Only took one non-grad transfer RB when our RB depth chart was 2 JAGs, a RB made of glass, and Carter was already showing signs of fumble and work ethic issues (Kyle Porter, Kirk Johnson, Daniel Young, Carter and Tristian Houston).

2019: Drayton fucked up by going all in on Cain/Sanders and missing both. Thankfully, Washington recruited Derrian Brown (bad injury luck) and Whittington ended up being a switch candidate.

I mean that’s just utter fucking incompetence from a roster management standpoint.  Not getting a JUCO any of the last two years or going after a GT this year, Drayton personally whiffing in 2019 when we desperately needed numbers at the position. There’s no excuse to not have a stable of quality backs at Texas after three years to recruit for the position.

How could you forget Tristian Houston, the pride of Southwest Oklahoma State???

All of these things were foreseeable, except Brown, and Drayton was gifted Whittington, who even the staff considered a WR until late in the 2019 cycle. Imagine if Whittington didn’t have the frame/ability to switch to RB. Drayton has completely fucked up.

Carter fell into his lap when UGA was out of room.

The point was that he chose the wrong RB.

Lulz. Transition classes suck. What if Strong had chosen to take Eno in the spring, what if Strong had chosen to take Anderson over Porter.

I think everyone was very happy when Texas landed Carter. Little did we know he was lazy.

Should have taken another GT, but no one could predict the bad luck Texas has had at RB this offseason.

Absolutely moronic post from Htownhorn, as usual. Drayton’s had three recruiting classes to figure this out. It’s no longer Strong’s fault no matter how much he screwed up.

Carter has character red flags in HS. There was nothing unforeseeable about how his career turned out.

There’s been one unforeseen loss (Brown) and one unforeseen addition to the position (Whittington). Expecting anything of Johnson would have been foolish and one of the other 3 scholarship RBs getting hurt in fall camp is completely foreseeable.

And this is why some of us criticized the staff for throwing their few serviceable RBs to take hits during physical scrimmages.  Fucking morons.  Knowing Whittington has a groin injury and Keontay has an injury, maybe let the walk-ons take all the reps since we are down to our fucking 3rd string back.  Instead, he’s hurt now with an injury that takes a lot of time to heal...

We better pray Whit and Ingram stay healthy.  Those two guys have both previously sustained lingering injuries.  Increasing Sam’s carries is not the damn solution.  For a staff that seems to make the right decisions most of the time, they’ve really fucked up the roster management when it comes to RBs.  Thank goodness Whittington is an athletic freak that picked up the position easily.  Imagine if he couldn’t transition from WR.

Drayton joined the Texas staff in the same month Carter enrolled in Texas, and Benjamin enrolled in ASU.

Drayton didn't "choose" anything in 2017.

They have to practice playing football to be good at playing football. Shit happens.

Toneil Carter’s speed an ideal compliment for Chris Warren’s power running

Spoiler

If what the Footwork King sees in Carter after three year’s of training him is accurate, the early enrollee may ultimately prove to be the best of the bunch.

“The University of Texas is getting one of the hardest working running backs that that school has ever seen,” Whitfield said. “He doesn’t get tired; he’s all about that work. They’re about to get a kid who wants to be great, wants to help Texas get to the national championship and a Big 12 Championship. You’ve got a kid who wants to be productive; every single time he gets the ball he wants to score. He’s a leader; he wants to be great.”

Repeating this nonsense again doesn’t make it sound any better.

Sure... put the walk-ons in there all day and let them take a beating.  With that line of thinking, why don't we go ahead and let Sam take off his green jersey and let him take hits too since you know... we have to practice taking hits to be good.  No one is arguing to stop practicing hard.  But given the lack of depth and the current injury situation, it would be wise for the staff to maybe be cautious with the remaining healthy backs considering LSU's defense is going to be the toughest defense we will have faced the last 3 years.  Let the defense go hard at the walk ons.

15+ carries for Keaontay, 8-12 for Whittington, 6+ for Sam, mix in a few bubble screens, dump offs in the flats, a jet sweep or two with Duverney / Burt.  Injuries happen. We'll adapt. It's like some you aren't happy unless you're complaining and hand-wringing.  Thems is the breaks in football. Deal with it.

Limit the backs against La Tech, all hands on deck vs LSU, rest whoever needs it gainst Rice, do whatever to win the conference opener against OK State, then get to the BYE to rest up more and move forward.

Lots of HORNS backups need reps vs La Tech.

Get Up Big Early vs those LT Bulldawgs...
