And the video confirms.

No telling how many dead we'd be talking about had it not been for these cops.   Dude was literally steps aways from more target practice inside the bar.

Guy turns the corner and the cops just take him out.  Stunning video.

Is that the cop that shot him talking into a mic, or is that bar security?

Looks like he poked out, assessed the situation and then took up a shooting position.  Well done.  If he clears that corner, we are talking a shit load of dead bodies.

Yep, went full screen and you can see it better.  Shotgun with an attached flashlight.

Not 100% on the shotgun, but the way he carries it that is what it looks like to me.

Cop got kinda lucky in my opinion, based on what you can see there.  He seems to have stepped way out from his cover fairly early. Maybe he figures the gunmen was moving quick and wouldn't be able to shoulder his rifle in time.

Waiting for additional news on this one, particularly the timeline of events leading up to the shooting. Was the sister and the other person who went with the shooter targeted for some reason? Was he actually denied access to the bar first as reported yesterday? Did he then go back to car to retrieve gun and put on body armor?

I always keep my body armor in the trunk, just in case.

It looks like the cop at the upper right of the video also shot like 3 times. He probably got it from both cops.

Give that cop a medal. Stepped up, risked his life, did his job.

Also... maybe... just maybe... we should find a way to keep the guy who had a hit list in high school from buying an assault rifle. Jfc

He ordered it from Texas.

It was legally purchased by Betts' from an online retailer in Texas. It then was transferred to him by a local firearms dealer who would be required to perform a background check, police said.

Nothing on Betts' criminal record would have prevented him from buying a gun.

He used legal-to-own 100-round drum magazines.

The lower receiver, which houses the trigger, was made by Anderson Manufacturing in Hebron, Kentucky. Under federal law, the lower receiver is the gun. Purchasing a lower receiver requires a background check. All other parts of guns, such as barrels and stocks, can be bought legally off the shelf or online.

Betts could have had as many as 250 rounds in his possession; he fired at least 41 rounds in about 30 seconds.

Title of the article?

Dayton shooter used a gun that may have exploited an ATF loophole

Yeah, read the article. The loophole isn’t the lower receiver, it’s the pistol brace.

Even though it looked like a rifle, the gun used to kill nine people and wound at least 14 more was likely classified as a pistol, skirting around laws restricting short-barreled rifles.

the timeline of the El Paso shooter is a mystery to me.  Given the 10 hour drive from North Dallas to EP, the shooting in the morning, did he drive all night and enact the deed without sleep?

Or was he hunkered down in El Paso for weeks, planning the details, anticipating the busiest shopping day?

Grandparents say he moved out 6 weeks ago.  This implies he's in EP for a long time.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/el-paso-walmart-shooting-suspect-patrick-crusius-grandparents-release-statement/

The Browns said they were "devastated" by the shooting and were praying for the victims. The couple added that while Crusius' driver's license shows their Allen residence, the 21-year-old had moved out of the home six weeks ago. Crusius was living with his grandparents while he attended nearby Collin College.

And he still killed 9 people and injured 26 people.

Weapons of war have no place in civilized society.

The pistol brace is a bit of a loophole around NFA rules though. Although that doesn’t really have anything to do with procuring the lower.

Not really.  ATF has always defined a "pistol" as a "weapon originally designed, made, and intended to fire a projectile (bullet) from one or more barrels when held in one hand".  Falling outside of the purview of the restrictive National Firearms Act.

Remember, the brace was created back in 2013 to help disabled shooters hold the front-heavy and awkward AR with a single hand.  Barrels were shortened for obvious reasons to help accommodate a one-handed shooter and conceal the buffer tube.  They are cosmetic (like virtually everything else on ARs).  The wording from the ATF as to why:  they are"not an integral part of the firearm"

If you really try to shoulder a AR with a brace you are hunched up and over your rear sights as you would using the buffer tube.   It can be done.  But why?  Why not engage with a full-size rifle.  This isn't CQB work.  For most:  because they "look cool".

These two are identical:

The semantics revolve around whether the adaptation constitutes a "redesign" of the device.  As stated, you can shoulder a brace.  You can also shoulder a buffer tube.  Leading us to the opaque "designed and intended" verbiage of the ATF.

weapon designed or redesigned, made or remade, and intended to be fired from the shoulder.”

So if you install a pistol stabilizing brace on an AR pistol as it was intended to be installed (on the buffer tube and up against, or at least close to, the rear of the receiver), then you have not “redesigned” anything. If you then fire that pistol from your shoulder, you haven’t changed the original designer’s intent and you haven’t redesigned it.

I can see both sides.  In the end, I still think this kid made the purchase because the rifle "looked cool".

Antidepressants found in his system. A common thread with many mass shootings, esp. involving younger individuals. Serotonergic link to impulsivity. Nothing to see here.

So people with mental health issues shouldn’t have access to guns.  Glad we agree.

I know someone who was going today. I think it was a patient.

Man, we left right before that happened. Or not too terribly long. Started getting texts and calls about 20 minutes after we pulled out.

Speaking of nonsense, I had to carry a damn 30 year old pocket knife back to the car, but they let this ass come in with a gun?

Last weekend for the game security to get in the fair was basically nonexistent. You could have gotten any semi auto in that you wanted.

Had to pass a metal detector at every gate today.

i was at the fair when the shit went down on saturday night, it was pretty wild. we were in the midway by the ferris wheel and suddenly a stampede of screaming people was running towards us. immediately assumed it was a shooting and we ducked behind a coupon booth while all the panicked people ran past. we didn't hear any gunshots and the panic died down after a few minutes...but then the sirens went off over the PA and it started all over again. we couldn't hear the announcement from the PA due to all the screaming so i have no idea what they said. there were people still riding all of the rides and the screams from the people on the rides would periodically set off another stampede of people thinking something was happening. police helicopter was circling the whole time. eventually we found a cop and he told us it was safe but everyone should evacuate. definitely got the adrenaline pumping for a few minutes. the aftermath of abandoned wagons, baby strollers, midway prizes, etc was post apocalyptic looking.
