Steve Wiltfong: New Texas A&M commit Hunter Erb plays with a mean streak

Quote

The background of new Texas A&M offensive tackle commit Hunter Erb’s Twitter profile is a photo of pancakes. The future Aggie out of Haslet (Texas) Eaton has a big love for them and seeks those out on Friday nights. Standing in at 6-foot-6, 305-pounds, Erb had a breakout junior season where a mean streak saw him dominate foes on Friday nights in earning admiration from the likes of Jimbo Fisher and several others.

And of course a lot of pancakes. “I went to camps in the summer and saw a bunch of five-stars and five-star players and one thing they all had in common was their aggressiveness,” Erb explained. “I try and be as nasty as possible. I worked out a lot and got stronger and I work my hardest to get the other guy to the ground.” Doesn’t hurt that Erb has nice feet and length too. He committed to Texas A&M over the weekend over offers from the likes of Baylor, Colorado, Oklahoma, Oregon, TCU and USC.

“Just the coaches and everything,” Erb said of what sealed the deal. “Before I even committed, there were a bunch of Aggie people that wanted me to come there. It’s family, seemed like great people.”

Offensive line coach Josh Henson and Fisher led the charge. They offered on Jan. 25. “I did a bunch of research, FaceTimed a lot and saw bunch of stuff,” Erb said. “Them letting me know how much they liked film and how much they need me over over there and they like how I played.” Erb played just three varsity games as a sophomore, two of the against Guyer and Southlake, a huge step up. He was ready for all challengers this fall. "I got a whole lot better,” Erb said. The tape and the pancakes speak to that.

Jeff Tarpley: Hunter Erb evidence of the shift in OL recruiting for Texas A&M

Quote

Texas A&M offensive line coach Josh Henson arrived on campus in February 2019 immediately after the ink had dried on the 2019 recruiting class and when the Aggies had already secured commitments from multiple members of their 2020 recruiting class. In all, there were six players that former offensive line coach Jim Turner had in the fold (one of them, Jordan Jefferson, was eventually moved to defense). In addition, two more, Akinola Ogunbiyi and Chris Morris, had been offered by Turner but wouldn't commit until the summer. Seven of the eight were 6-foot-4 or shorter although most of them very close to that 6-foot-4 mark. In addition, they were typically listed at 325 pounds or greater. Mass seemed to be the most important physical trait within the two classes as long as they had the requisite height to play either inside or outside (although the majority were projected to be interior players).

Henson's 2021 recruiting class looked a lot different as A&M brought in four players listed at 6-foot-5 with Fort Bend Christian Academy's Remington Strickland designated as the center within the group...and he measured in at 6-foot-4. In addition, other than Foster, the group generally weighed in at around 300 pounds or so and so they had room to add good weight once they got into a college nutrition and strength program.

The shift in body types is subtle but seismic. Fisher's Florida State and Henson's Oklahoma State teams utilized zone blocking plays in which length and footwork played an important role in winning and then sustaining initial contact in the run game. In addition, longer players can theoretically keep defenders away from their bodies on just on run plays but in pass protection as well.

Now, rising offensive tackle prospect Hunter Erb out of Haslet Easton High School is another such player that seemingly follows that trend into the 2022 recruiting class. Erb is listed at 6-foot-6, 305 pounds and has the frame to eventually be much bigger (especially when you look at his lower body versus his upper body). He lines up at left tackle in his high school film but probably projects to the right side at the next level.

Erb obviously enjoys the physical part of the game as he keeps his head up and looks for contact coming out of his stance if there is no one lined up directly over him. He works to dominate people physically and likes to them into the ground whenever possible. Erb is headhunter at the second level of the defense and goes out of his way to hunt those defenders down. Regardless of your talent level, he's not someone who you're going to enjoy facing for 60 minutes.

He already has a lot of upper body strength which manifests itself in a couple of different ways. First, it enables him to sustain blocks after contact. Second, he plays with a lot of punch when he is upright and is able to redirect people or knock them over. That's evidenced by his ability to throw the discus 130 feet which is impressive for someone with his length. Erb comes off of the ball surprisingly well for someone with his length as he lacks the bend and compact stance to really explode and win pad level against opponents. He plays from the top down and tends to engulf people.

He doesn't have great change of direction in terms of adjusting on the move but does keep his feet under his body and doesn't overextend himself much. Erb's kick step and lateral movement aren't what win him battles versus edge rushers although they're adequate for his size. He's more about using his big body to make people work to get around him and his long arms to prevent them from being able to play with bend and burst to gain an advantage.

In the run game, he's a straight line player who keeps his feet moving and his eyes upfield. This enables him to generate push on the first level and find people at the second level. Erb is somewhat upright in his stance due to his length. He's going to be vulnerable to people that have bend and can win initial pad level both in the run game and as pass rushers because he can lose leverage.

Overall, Erb is an example of how the Aggies have changed up their offensive line recruiting under Henson. While he can probably play inside, his best position is projected to be at right tackle with the ability to bucket step, gain depth, and stay with someone on zone running plays while being able to generate the power and attitude to eventually finish them. These attributes should not only enable you to build a running game around them but also be adequate in pass protection.

That Wiltfong piece gives the impression he's going to get the aggy/Elko high rating.

I'd like to see his tape evaluation. The highlights show a dude practically lined up in the backfield on every play, they seem to always run to the opposite side of him and he likes to get to the second level on pass plays a lot. But he definitely looks like he is a college football player.

Aggie War Room: A&M recruiting intel from loaded Dallas Pylon event

VIP By ANDREW HATTERSLEY 4 hours ago

With Signing Day in the rearview mirror for the most part, the focus now turns to the class of 2022 and 2023 as the 7-on-7 season swings into full gear.

The Aggies have already built up a notable amount of momentum with five additions to the 2022 class over just the last couple of weeks.

GigEm247 was on hand throughout the entire weekend in Carrollton and has gathered a ton of intel on a number of A&M prospects.

2022 BEAUMONT WEST BROOK DB BRYCE ANDERSON

(Photo: Andrew Hattersley, 247Sports)

Just over a week after decommitting from LSU, 2022 West Brook defensive back Bryce Anderson has certainly been garnering quite a bit of attention from a number of programs including Texas A&M, Texas, Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson and Oklahoma. The Aggies have been one of the schools most aggressive in their pursuit of Anderson with TJ Rushing and Ishmael Aristide in contact multiple times a week.  The top-100 safety has said that he would like to wait until the late summer to make a decision, but sources close to Anderson indicated to GigEm247 a decision could come sooner than that. Texas is another school in hot pursuit of Anderson, who said he is in contact with Blake Gideon and Terry Joseph on a daily basis as well. Right now, this is certainly shaping up to be a battle between the Aggies and Longhorns with others pushing to get in the mix as well.

2022 ALEDO S BRYAN ALLEN

(Photo: Andrew Hattersley, 247Sports)

Another former LSU commit who opted to reopen his recruitment is Bryan Allen. Texas A&M is among the programs to reach out to Allen after he reopened his recruitment along with Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Kansas State and Texas Tech. Once the dead period is lifted, Allen said he would like to visit Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Georgia.

Allen is still in the early stages of building a relationship with the A&M staff but said he has been in contact with analyst Ishmael Aristide while adding the two have a good relationship right now. There is no timeline for a decision from Allen at this point.

2022 ROCKWALL-HEATH WR JAY FAIR

(Photo: Andrew Hattersley, 247Sports)

Another A&M target in action this past weekend was Jay Fair, who is coming off a big season with Rockwall-Heath. After seeing his recruitment really take off in the past month or so, Fair said he and his family have been sitting down on a weekly basis to take stock of where his recruitment stands with the goal of making a decision sometime this spring. Texas A&M and TCU are two of the schools that have made a strong impression on Fair with Auburn and Georgia in the mix as well. Fair recently conducted a virtual visit with the A&M staff and came away impressed from the presentation where he got the chance to see the facilities and talk with Jimbo Fisher for the first time. The Horned Frogs are a strong factor as well.

2022 FRISCO LIBERTY WR EVAN STEWART

(Photo: Collin Kennedy, 247Sports)

I had a chance to catch up as well with Frisco Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart, who appeared close to announcing a decision in recent weeks before deciding to hold off. Stewart said he plans to take some time to make a decision and did hear a few weeks ago from A&M wide receivers coach Dameyune Craig, while Jimbo Fisher has been in contact as well. Still from talking with sources around Stewart, A&M has a significant amount of ground to make up for the national top-50 prospect if they decide to push for him with others including Texas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and LSU making strong pushes as well

Tarp puff piece on King Haynes

Spoiler

When you ask people about the quarterback situation on campus, this is the only guy they talk about.

King garnered everyone's attention after his arrival on campus last year by coming in with work ethic second to none both in the weight room and the meeting room. A multi-sport star coming out of high school, everyone knew that King was a really good athlete but that he needed to get stronger. However, what they didn't realize was that he not only got bigger but also even more athletic. King not only registered the fastest 40 time when players returned to campus for the start of the off season program but also reportedly the best long jump, vertical, and shuttle as well. Given the influx of great athletes in the football team under Jimbo Fisher including guys like Demond Demas and Devon Achane, that's saying a lot.

However, King has also made his presence felt among the veterans due to his seriousness and dedication to his craft. He came in and worked extremely hard in terms of learning the offense but his reputation as a coach's son meant that he asked better questions and picked things up a little faster. His background has given him a feel for the game that most kids don't have. As a result, veteran wideouts have gravitated towards working with him moreso than they normally would a young player at that position because they already have a lot of confidence in him and are impressed by his knowledge and maturity.

No one is saying that he is going to replace Johnny Manziel as the best quarterback in school history. However, they do have high hopes for him being ahead of the curve in comparison to most redshirt freshmen when he steps on the field in the spring and then again in the fall.

I'm not sure I'd be bragging about my redshirt freshman QB having the fastest 40, long jump and vertical....I'm pretty sure King isn't Mike Vick....

He didn't allow Kellen Mond to go out there and sling it around. Good thing because some games, Mond had a hard time hitting the ground with the ball.

That's pretty talented if he can read what's written on a wall while deep throating at the same time.

Perception becoming reality in recruiting battles between A&M, Texas

By  JEFF TARPLEY 84 minutes ago

Quote

Texas A&M wound up with a 9-1 record in 202o that saw them finish fourth in the final Associated Press poll which was their highest ranking since 2012. As a result, their 2021 recruiting class finished seventh in the country per the 247 Sports Composite.

Meanwhile, Texas completed a 7-3 season in which they lost to Big 12 rival Oklahoma again and two home games. They wound up firing head coach Tom Herman and installing Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian. Since the majority of their class came on board during the early signing period before the coaching change and in a time when the Horns were said to have actively been looking to replace Herman, Texas managed to land the country's 17th rated class.

The preceding indicated that there is a direct correlation between the direction you're headed on the football field versus that of the recruiting class that you sign. For a school like A&M that's located within one of the most talent rich areas of the country and just an hour or more from one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United States, that should serve them very well in the regional recruiting wars against the likes of the Sooners and Horns.

In turn, that should translate into a high end class on a national level because even though the Aggies recruit nationally far more than they ever have before, they still manage to stockpile talent from within their own borders as much or moreso than they do from anywhere else. Of their 24 signees in the 2021 class, 14 were located within the state of Texas. Not only that, while the final battle for most of A&M's signees may not have been one between the Aggies and Longhorns, per the 247 database Texas did offer 13 of the Aggies' eventual signees while A&M offered just eight of Texas 21 commits.

On the surface, it's an indication of just how one sided the battle got in 2021 between the two programs but below the surface Texas has a lot of work to do to catch up to the Aggies. Texas Football did an anonymous survey of 32 high school prospects and they were asked which was the most overrated program in the state.

About two thirds of them...21 in all...answered Texas. Only two answered A&M. That's not just a mandate, it's a landslide.

That mentality is carrying over into the 2022 class as well. Although both programs are off to solid starts so far, A&M already has commits from five prospects and four of them have offers from the Horns. The other, offensive tackle Hunter Erb, was a A&M-Oklahoma battle. Not only that, four of the five A&M commits play on the line of scrimmage (offensive line, tight end, or front seven) which is where games and championships are ultimately won.

That trend is expected to continue into the 2022 class as A&M is generally projected as a top ten program heading into the 2021 season. Once again, those results will be reflected in the December signing period and then the 2022 class rankings.

Even though A&M is now far more involved in the national recruiting wars than the Horns as befitting the geographic reach of a head coach like Jimbo Fisher and a staff that recruits the southeastern and northeastern regions of the country very well, it's still important to win the head to head battles within your state. While A&M's competitors have increasingly included SEC West rivals Alabama and LSU, being better than Texas on the field still carries important advantages off of it and should continue to do so into the foreseeable future.

Before we completely flip the page to the 2022 recruiting cycle, Dave Campbell's Texas Football wanted to get down to the bottom of some of the most pressing questions we could think of for 2021 recruits.

So, we surveyed 32 of the top Texas high school football recruits promising anonymity so that they could speak openly and honestly about the questions posed.

First up: Which in-state school is the most overrated and why?

Below are the responses we got, unfiltered and anonymous as promised:

  • Texas, have been an average team for a while
  • Texas. Do not know how to recruit right.
  • UT Austin
  • Texas. They get tons of highly rated recruits but can’t seem to put those super talented guys on the field and have them pan out
  • Univ of Texas , they get top guys every year but don’t put any in the league
  • Texas, because they get 4-5 Star recruits every year but can’t do anything with them
  • Texas and boosters
  • Alabama
  • Thay are not
  • Texas because they play LSU
  • UT because they suck
  • Ut because there ut
  • Baylor- horrible town and bad program since Rhule left
  • UT. They just are
  • Texas they don’t have a history of producing talent to the league
  • oklahoma state just because
  • SMU- they don’t play any elite teams
  • Texas, never gets it together
  • Texas tech and because my friend Coby is about to go there
  • Texas lol
  • UT, they haven't seemed to be able to get things going on the inside. Also heard poor things about how the old staff would treat players after signing.
  • Texas A&M. they just overrated
  • Texas idk why
  • Texas
  • Baylor
  • I don’t think any are overrated
  • Texas idk they annoying
  • Texas and they never produce and they constantly get multiple top recruits
  • Texas
  • Not sure
  • Texas because Horns down
  • A&M. They lost to UCLA... in football... Thats all.

This entire article could be summarized as "texas a&m out-recruited texas' embattled and soon to be fired coaching staff last cycle, and despite having been on the job for 3-4 weeks now (not having held a full practice much less a game) the new staff has not yet been able completely change the programs perception in the minds of 17 year olds.

That's really all the entire thing says.

Expectations are higher for Texas. Shocking. In reality, the silver lining to that is that when Texas meets or exceeds expectations, it lands damned near whoever it wants in-state. We just haven’t won at that level in 11+ years. I guess you can make an argument for 2018, but Texas still lost 4 games that season, including one to fucking Maryland.

We haven't been good (outside of the Fiesta Bowl win) since these kids were 4 years old. We've had top-10 classes in 6 of the last 10 years and a 73-53 record over that time period. We are, objectively, the most under-performing program in the state over the last decade. As ctj said, the expectations for our program are higher than for A&M, Baylor, Tech, etc.

Aggy is coming off their greatest season since Germany invaded Poland. They're playing the game at a Jackie-Sherrill level. They should be whipping our asses. But they're so fucking weird that we'll still get a bunch of good players with whom we can win a bunch of games. And the good news is that when we win games, we get pretty much whoever the fuck we want.

This is not a grand PR conspiracy leveled against Texas by our regional rivals. It's perception rooted in on-field bed-shitting. But it can all be erased with a 10 win season and the perception that we're headed in the right direction and not tripping all over our dicks for the first time in a dozen years.

By the end of Herman's time here, players were actively negatively recruiting the program to HS kids. That sort of thing would have stuck in their minds. All A&M, TCU, blOU, etc. have to do is reinforce it and no more new coach bump

We've sucked for quite a while, but that's way too negative an outlook.

When that head coach and the majority of his staff - presumably the primary targets/subjects of the negative recruitment - are gone ... and several of the new guys are not only from Bama, but fresh off a dominant National Championship win, I don't think it's going to be that easy to reinforce said negative sentiment, or eliminate the new coach bump in its entirety.

The Winfield and Blue commitments, Guilbeau sticking around, and Murphy's interest, are evidence of that.
