No thread yet? We really are a white, male in the 40's-50's dominated demographic on this site, aren't we? Where my POC's at? Let's do this thread!

Toni Morrison was the real-life Buckaroo Banzai of the african-american wing of 20th century geekintelligentsia that was mainstream acceptable and not controversial which is why the average surlyite barely knew her.

‘We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives.’

Toni Morrison is having a moment at the tail end of this Black History Month, thanks to this very talented literary teacher and critic having recently written a book on her writing and aesthetics. She's making the rounds on the usual literary world circuit, which is great. It's gotten me to revisit some of the text.

Toni Morrison, as my black brothers and sisters know, was rather tokenized and made one-dimensional into a "sassy book diva" and thrown into the buckets of a different type of simplied a la Maya Angelou and Oprah Winfrey, instead of the rightful heiress to the Harlem Renaissance movement as a very strong modernist writer who punched as hard as Faulkner or Hemingway who just happened to be black and female.

Anyways, worth a revisit if you haven't in a while or a first look if you had an inferior english/literature education by weak pedagogues who didn't understand her form because of race and sociological products of the time. It's been great for me to revisit as I had been chewing through some of Hemingway's short stories again. Yea, I've been in a mood.

Also shout out to this Harvard prof for doing this:

It makes me mad because Toni Morrison was a legitimate literary powerhouse and absolutely belongs in modern canon but gets thrown out with the bath water of “race relations” and “sociology of the African American diaspora studies” type syllabi instead of “American Literature 316K - Exemplars of Modernism, Writers in 20th Century America” (I made that class up, but would love to take it).

ETA: no shade to my race studies majors and minors, NTTAWWT, whatever floats your boat, but even TM would reject her being compressed to Charlie Rose soundbytes on YT and misquoted/quoted out of context “reclamation” movements.

@Vegas64 did you use search to find this thread?

Yes. It was sad there was not any Toni Morisson threads (and this one is mispelled lol) but also the only real conversation about her in other threads was pretty throwaway. It is what it is, I guess.

Appreciate the book rec. My English teachers were great, but we never made it much beyond 1960s lit in any class I can remember taking (and this was in the 2000s..). I knew her name and the names of her major works, but came to know them via audiobook rather than their original format. An amazing writer, one of our very best who, as you say, is shamefully overlooked when it comes to canonization.
