Fun fact. Last year MINOR league baseball had 50 million attendees at games. NFL had 17 million.

Minor league baseball has well over 250 teams that play 140+ games a season.   Over 37,000 games a year.

NFL plays 256 games.

Baseball makes money with quantity, no doubt. Hey it has worked since 1869 I guess.

my wife was given about 10 tickets to the roughnecks game this weekend, so I pretty much have carte blanche to invite anyone of my friends that want to go. I’m hoping it will be a good time.

Or you could sell them and get an 18 pack of beer.

Your math would be good if there were only one team in every game.

But your point is well-taken.

June Jones bringing the Run ‘n shoot back to Houston.

XFL is supposed to be geared to high scoring play.  What rules are they tweaking to do that?

agree, and I'd bet they could've gotten the Alamo Dome for cheap since they'd be filling the most of the lower bowl. I remember when UTSA started playing games there and folks were excited just to have something more exciting that highschool football

Is the XFL doing anything creative with offensive (or defensive) formations?

Hal Mumme is Dallas's OC. You can bet he'll have some interesting stuff to run.

Surprised they have not tried tweaking the offensive line for better blocking. Seems like most of the time I watch these secondary leagues (last year, Europe XFL etc) the line plane is so terrible the rest of the game suffers and becomes hard to watch.

not sure what you can do, but a QB/Offense looks a hell of a lot better when they have time.

What I’m interested in is how does allowing communication between coaches and QB’s for the entire game really impact it?

In the NFL the Comm shuts down with 15 seconds left on the play clock. In this league it will be possible to speak with the QB during the entire game. So we may see the OC yell “34 post wide open, throw it”. I’m sorry that just seems fun as hell to me.

Don't forget porn stache Landry Jones is Dallas' QB. Fuck both of them. And to top it off, I think it was a stupid ass decision to play in a baseball stadium in fucking Arlington. They should play at SMU or at the soccer stadium in Frisco. I'm shocked how many of these teams are playing in NFL stadiums. They are going to look desolate as fuck after week 1.

Agree completely. They should have gone with FCS stadiums -- big enough to seem legit, but small enough to not seem like a joke.

Went to Houston game. It was a blast. Love the pace of play. Hopeful this league works. Enjoyed the broadcast and new ideas they bring to the table

Love that they are doing Sat and Sunday games.

Fill up a slower time for sports.

It will be interesting to see how they fair when up against March Madness.  They need to make some hay in the next few weeks as far as buzz and fans.

Looked at Ticketmaster just to get an idea and the tickets for today's game are pretty much sold out with one available being verified resale. Prices of what's available start at $78. No thanks at that price but I will be interested to see what they are after a couple of weeks of games.

These games are great for gambling. Must be hard for Vegas to make precise lines in the first few weeks with no data points to work with. The o/u have been the same across the board for all of the games

The kickoff change is fantastic and I think it will make its way to the NFL in a year or two.  It makes the play relevant and exciting.  Same with the PAT, the 1-2-3 point option is very engaging in a way a chip shot field goal just isn't.

I liked DC quite a bit for overall uni/logo/helmet.  That was a pleasant, clean look.

Thought it was pretty good. The kickoff is better than the NFL. The access is interesting to watch.

The NFL really should embrace this as a place to send their practice squad and fringe guys to get development. They've needed a minor league for years.

I didn't watch any games in their entirety, but I enjoyed what I saw.

This will fail, but it won't be because it's that bad of a product.  Putting minor league football in the immediate wake of the Super Bowl is always going to hurt it.  For a minor league to really take root, they need to start play in say April.  Let people build up a little thirst for football.  Plus, you open up more possible markets.  I've always thought that places like Omaha, Des Moines, or OKC (all have AAA baseball) would be ripe to have a rabid fanbase for minor league football.  Football is massively popular in these markets, but they'll never be NFL worthy.  But playing outside in February is a non-starter for places like Omaha and Des Moines (and even OKC is at enough risk for miserable weather in February), and I also think casual fans will be more interested in games after they've been football deprived for a time.

I used to think the same that they should be in the mid-size markets to get more fans. But I'm coming around to why the current league is in professional markets (StL being the only exception). Nebraska, Iowa, and Oklahoma are "big" football markets, but the are already devoted to their college teams, and pretty much every fan has an NFL team they follow, either because of nearest proximity, because their favorite college player is on that team, or maybe they just pick at random. Oklahoma has strong followings of both the Cowboys and Chiefs for proximity reasons, and a healthy "Packer Backer" contingent. Giving one of these markets a half-baked minor league football product is not something that will really sway them to support over and above their college and NFL allegiances. It seems that the current XFL's model is to promote "affordability" to the NFL markets, i.e., the Cowboys cost way too much, but come see the XFL for cheap. Many of them may have no strong college allegiance, which happens in big markets, so minor league football for cheap might be appealing.

I also think this league is designed to make money by media contracts as opposed to attendance. I was surprised to find that all of their games will be on ABC, Fox, or ESPN. Not like the AAF where there were streaming games and other weird networks where you need the big cable package. Three of the four games every week will be available OTA it seems, and the other on basic ESPN. Small market fans are already accustomed to watching games of teams from big markets, but I doubt the inverse is true. I think sports fans in Des Moines and OKC will tune in to watch LA v. NY or DAL v. HOU, but I doubt many people living in those cities would tune in to watch Des Moines v. OKC. Maybe I'm wrong, but every past iteration has failed. This will probably fail too, but they are trying something different, so it has as good a chance as any. The TV contract alone is promising and a big advantage over the AAF.

That's a pretty solid argument for doing what they're doing, but again I'll bring it back to timing.  Even keeping with NFL markets, I think the odds of drawing good TV ratings increase with some distance between this and the current football season.

Running the league from April through the end of the July would be about perfect time-wise.  You have separation from the end of the NFL season, but you wind down right before the real football hype starts, and give people a month off to get warmed up for that.

I would like to see:

1 pt from current NFL extra point (as a kick)

2 from 1 and 1/2 (traditional go for two spot).

3 from the 5 (or somewhere a little further out)

I really hope we get an OT game soon. I'm sold by the description that it will be better than both NFL and College rules. I'd like to see it in action though.

On that note, I was surprised this week to see so many one point tries, and how many of them were failed attempts to run up the gut. You would think the coaches would have more passes drawn up which would not be much harder to execute for 2 than 1. I thought the rules would be to encourage more 2 and 3 point shots.

My 6 year old is fascinated with football so i became a bit of an XFL expert over the weekend while watching the majority of all 4 games.

Observations:

- Love the in-game audio of the conversations between players and coaches.

- Instant reaction on sidelines after positive (TD's, etc.) and negative (missed FG) plays is cool, if a little uncomfortable.

- Cool that turnover takers get to keep the other team's ball as a trophy.

- QB play is rough.

- More punting than I expected, Dallas punted on 4th and less than a foot from their own 40 in a scoreless or 3-0 game in the first half.

- Kickoff solution is really good.

- Curious about ticket sales.  Large areas of the best seats don't show any availability.  I'd be shocked if those are really all sold (especially in the $100+ / seat range).  Wondering if they sell those to walk-up buyers to minimize the empty seats close to the field.

- All four stadiums, announced official attendance was approximately 17,500 (suspicious)

- Hearing the communication between refs and replay official was interesting, process moved along quickly for the most part.

- Like the 1, 2 and 3 point conversion options.  Wouldn't mind having a separate 1 point PAT option that is a 40-45 yard kick.  Also would like a 4 point field goal (Not PAT)  from 55 and beyond.

- Bob Stoops still sucks.

- Never saw the much heralded "double forward pass" play.  Maybe I missed it, but was disappointed it didn't play a more prominent role.

- Wondered if the in-stadium fans have any option to hear any of the coach/player, player / sideline reporter , or referee / replay official communication.  If not, they need to figure out a way to include the fans in the stands on that as it enhances the watching experience in my opinion. (similar to scanners at car races)

Overall, entertaining enough.  Hopefully they will build some momentum, avoid the urge to play conservative football and understand that pushing the envelope on offense is what people want to see.

Totally this.

I think they would have been better off to have found a couple of no-name non-BCS division football coaches with innovative offenses then recycling some of the retreads they have.
