We called them garden spiders when we were growing up and, yeah, tossed the small grasshoppers in the webs and watched them go to work.  During 4th of July they got a few lady fingers tossed to them, they are quick learners.

for scale those are garden shears and a pair of gloves on the ground.  the spider when its legs were spread was fucking impressive in size

that is a male black widow. They aren't as venomous nor as likely to bite as the female.

 

The female is all black with the hour glass on the underside of the abdomen.
