Around 2011, Falwell, president of Liberty University in Virginia, and his wife, Rebecca, began personal fitness training sessions with Benjamin Crosswhite, then a 23-year-old recent Liberty graduate. Now, after a series of university real estate transactions signed by Falwell, Crosswhite owns a sprawling 18-acre racquet sports and fitness facility on former Liberty property. Last year, a local bank approved a line of credit allowing Crosswhite’s business to borrow as much as $2 million against the property.

This shit enrages me. Private religious schools shouldn't receive one goddamn cent of our tax dollars. You want to attend a madrasa, that's your choice. Don't expect the rest of us to help you pay for it. Let the lord provide. If you want Uncle Sam's help, go to a public school.

While I'm at it, fuck Ronald Reagan. He started this shit.

I went to a Christian University and I agree with this. They were intolerant of people being gay. I personally believe religious schools should never, ever have access to even a cent of public money for their students. You assholes have churches that are just tax free money grabs. Go get some money from your parishioners to pay for the bullshit education you are giving.

Well, all the other guys confess, cry on television and then commence to selling drums of mashed potato goo, so thoughts and prayers little Jerry, thoughts and prayers. Oh, and while you're at it, try some of that Miracle Spring Water. Hallelujah!

Phlegm sock?

My comments are my own, nobody's sock. I remember a Phlegm from TOS where I used to lurk but I don't remember the posting style. Mostly I remember BrisketTexan because of his beer avatar, and Mitch Crumpsteen because of his wife's 'art.' So, sorry but I am who I am.

Now, back to lil Jerry. If he is gay, there is nothing wrong with that, but I agree with WhattheBuck, and religious schools should be privately funded because their current funding is hypocritical.

Men of faith aren't tempted by homosexual acts.  Homosexuality is apparently a voluntary act of choice.

Also, if you're baptist...just expedite the process and move yourself into oncoming traffic.  You literally serve zero purpose in today's society.

Some Surly employment lawyer killed it on this agreement, but I am not sure this is a solid income/EO tax position...

"Liberty said Falwell uses the university-chartered jet to fly every year to his annual physical in Miami. Crosswhite joined him in 2012 “to explain to the doctors Mr. Falwell’s diet and exercise program and help document the results,” the university said. Because Liberty’s board requires an annual physical for Falwell, the president doesn’t have to reimburse the university for the corporate jet travel to Miami, the statement said.

It was in Miami in 2012, as well, that Falwell met Granda, the pool attendant he would later finance in business. The financial ties between Falwell and Granda have been detailed by BuzzFeed and others."

Here’s a serious question regarding those pictures of him and trump in the same room:

Do conmen even like being around each other, or is it like oppositional religious leaders or mob bosses who can’t stand each other and just tolerate being in their presence for as little time as possible?

Sounds like something Phlegm would say

You don't think Wharton wants him at Penn?  I like how he always drops "Wharton" as if any of his dipshit voters have a working knowledge of the top business schools in this country?  You may as well also throw in Kellogg, Sloan, Booth, or McCombs.  Those morons aren't gonna know what the fuck you're talking about.  Yeah, they'll know MIT or Penn, but they're not gonna know what those other names mean.

$50 says it's the University of Phoenix that houses his Library.

The fall of Liberty "University" is gonna be great.
Founded by that piece of shit Falwell.
Hired that rape cover upper Candadian Iam McCaw from Baylor.
Hired Hugh Freeze, remember he's the one that hired an escort using a State of Mississippi paid for cell phone and ended up getting Ole Miss hammered by the NCAA.

Run by cuckold Falwell Jr.

I cannot wait for that fake school to go boom. Flames indeed.

Then it would be the perfect place for a Trump Presidential Library. They’re all cons presenting themselves as Christians.

Still a more honorable place than Baylor, IMO.  But all Baptist universities could close tomorrow and this country wouldn't skip a beat.  There's about 50 of 'em, and to a campus...they are all $40,000/year indoctrination camps offering a degree worth about the equivalent of a good community college.  The only good academic Baptist Universities left the Baptist Church affiliation years ago for good reason (Brown, Belmont, Mercer, and Stetson).  The rest are just flying the Baptist flag to charge more and teach less.

Wake Forest?

I don't think Wake Forest was ever Baptist.  I know their medical school has some kinda affiliation with the Baptist teaching hospitals in the south, but I assume that's for some kinda fund-sharing arrangement.  Wake Undergrad is secular, private to my understanding.

From the WF Wiki:

The School of Divinity, accredited by the Association of Theological Schools, offers a Master of Divinity degree as well as dual-degree programs in bioethics, counseling and law.[69][70][71][72] The school also offers a certificate in Spirituality and Health in association with the Wake Forest School of Medicine.[73]

Gail O'Day was appointed in 2010 as dean of the school and professor of New Testament and preaching.[74] The school has 18 faculty members, five adjunct faculty and 12 associated faculty from other university departments.[75] According to its mission statement, the school is "Christian by tradition, Baptist in heritage, and ecumenical in outlook."

It’s a great school , best in the list after brown.  Nothing against them, I didn’t know the heritage angle and they sure as shit don’t advertise it.

There are many things about my alma mater that I disagree with but BU doesnt teach at a community college level. The majority of my profs in the history department were UT or Berkeley grads and not one of them treated me any worse when they found out I was non-religious. Not once did religious pressure happen in the classes that I took. I did hate the chapel class they make freshmen take, but it was a big harmless mess. The scriptures class was great in that they taught it in a historical way and not a "you better believe this happened" way. They would give us the traditional information then tell us what scholars now believe that goes against the traditional beliefs (mostly with authorship and dating) and that actually strengthened my lack of faith. There are levels to religious institutions and Baylor does not equal Bob Jones or Pensacola Christian. Those schools aren't going to teach you about evolution but BU has plenty of courses on physical anthropology.

Now will I advocate my kids attend Baylor? No, I'd rather they go somewhere in the top 50 for that kind of money, but I left without paying a dime in tuition so it worked for me.

When believers hear that, they understand they're supposed to learn it just to pass the class then they can forget it and go back to believing in their mythology. That's the school's intent. And the intent of the parents who send their kids there.

The profs enjoy ruffling feathers of 18 year olds from First Baptist ____, but yes there are a lot of parents that are trying to keep their kids in line when it comes to college and the admin is very much about that as well. That's where a lot of issues begin. The admin thinks that these kids are different than other college kids and can't possible believe that X is happening here. When x does happen here well it was an isolated event so sweep it under the rug. Currently there is a big fight between the profs and the admin/board over allowing gay rights groups on campus. The university officially won't kick you off for being gay and equates gay sex as premarital sex as a sin blah blah blah. Younger alums and students started a petition to allow the groups on campus and I was proud to see pretty much the entire history department signed the petition along with other departments, but the university basically said thanks but no thanks.

One thing that always give me a chuckle was how Baylor's religion department is filled up with Duke and Princeton Theological Seminary grads which are Methodist and Presbyterian schools respectively.

Long Politico story on how Liberty University seems to funnel money to the Falwells and anyone associated with them. (I know, big surprise) Easy to keep dissent down when everyone high up in the university needs Jr. to fund their life.

https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2019/09/09/jerry-falwell-liberty-university-loans-227914

have to admit that I was unaware that Falwell jr. wasn’t a minister, and instead calls himself a real estate developer, lawyer, and of course university president. Jr. sounds almost exactly like trump in terms of how he runs Liberty. Money flows to the falwells.  Family is promoted to top positions. Hypocritical personal actions especially for someone running a religious school that goes as far as punishing students for coed dancing.  But the president and his son are running and partying at a Miami nightclub isn’t a problem?

and as far as politics, liberty doesn’t seem to care that they are violating their tax status by promoting politics. But since they promote trump, who’s going to go after them? And if a future administration goes after them, I’m sure liberty will respond it’s because they’re a Christian school.
