I think anyone capable of answering that would be insane to answer that. I'm also betting there is no sweeping for bugs inside any of these programs, Texas or otherwise. Maybe I'm being naive, but it seems farfetched.

Yeah, I think very little sophistication across the board.  Although I did hear that Mack Brown once confiscated the cell phone of every staff member to try to find a press leak that pissed him off or at least scare them into not leaking.  Which did not shock me in the least when I heard that.

But I'll add my suspicion regarding the lack of sophistication among coaches generally makes me think there is a paper trail if on this if they are able to look in the like places.  I see sophisticated clients and law firm partners put stupid shit in emails all the time.  Can only imagine the text conversations college coaches have if those could get turned over.

This is bigger than the Astros scandal I think.  The was for just breaking ball or fastball with nothing about location or pitch type for breaking balls.  There was still some guess work for the hitter.  This is beyond just knowing if it's run or pass.  If they put in enough work, they would have known the exact run play and the route options on pass plays.

Expand

No.  Hitting a baseball is one of the hardest things to do in sports. Knowing what type of pitch is being thrown is a monumental advantage for the batter.  Only people with no intelligence and/or no integrity would think otherwise. You know...Astros apologists.

There are (or at least used to be) signs up around Moncrief near the low level/student staffers that said "what you see here, what you hear here, let it stay here when you leave here."

Mack was def paranoid about that kind of stuff. Lots of practices inside DKR or the dogshit bubble for big games.

Deion had some comments on this earlier in the week. Said its  a much bigger deal in baseball.

I'm not a Big Ten fan but I always watched the game and it seemed odd that Ohio state was destroying Michigan and then suddenly Michigan was destroying Ohio State. Something changed and now we know what it was.

Who has the balls to have that listed as a budget item in their annual audit?  This screams to me less B10 pettiness and more Vegas being pissed once they found out...

Here's what I don't get- if I'm OSU or another opponent that knows signs are being stolen, I'd flip that to my advantage.  Not only completely change, but change them to the exact opposite.  The sign for 4 verts is now belly dive, etc.  I know it's not quite that easy, but seems like this could easily be turned around on Michigan- think Leach in the 2000 TX/OU game.

Why would Vegas care unless they were shaving/fixing?

Expand

Because they were consistently screwing the spread.  Michigan was 2nd best "value added" ATS in college football and best record ATS in college football since 2021.

Thats a lot of money consistently going one way. If your models all say that they should do X and not account for if they have an added edge, Vegas eats that difference.  That in many ways is more costly than shaving because it is not an isolated set of large bets bet a major slant on all Michigan games.

Run it as a basic math problem. Build the spread to be 50/50 and cash on the difference between likelihood and payout. Now instead skew that likelihood by a major percentage and so they don't make money and most likely lose a ton because of how popular they are.

The other fin part is that they are bad against the spread early in the year and then all of a sudden get much better as the season progresses...

Nah - this screams Ohio State to me.  And I despise Ohio State and always root for Michigan in that rivalry.   But if Ohio St and/or boosters spearheaded this I am absolutely here for it.

Yeah, now that I read the article, getting access to computer drives had to stem from that.  But I don't know enough about that investigation to know who would have engaged a third party law firm if not the NCAA.

I could see that. I just have a hard time seeing it being paid for by an opposing AD because of the paper trail. Now if this was in-house damage control for something else and then they found this and decided to report it, I could buy that.

This shit just gets more and more wild. If it wasn’t the team I root for it would be a whole lot better.

Vast networks, manifestos, hacking of university computer, and Venmo. What a story.

Surly thinks Coach Day looks like a pedo.  I don't cohort with pedo's so I can't agree/disagree.  I'll just defer to the pedophile experts here and I think you should as well.  All in good fun.

So the next question.  Does this firm give their findings directly to the Big10?  If I was Michigan I would be more worried about the conference than the NCAA.

Well, if it started by folks realizing their files/computers were being accessed and they hired someone to dig into that...

Sorry if this has already been discussed in depth, I’ve really only been scanning the thread for large upvotes or links. But, I find the lone wolf theory to be hilarious because it makes absolutely no sense. Any Michigan coach with an IQ above room temperature would look around and simply asks the guy how he’s so good at stealing the signs. He can’t be at multiple places at one time, the opponents signs are not on film, and it’s impossible to get anything from watching the games on tv. This is why it looks so bad on the Michigan coaching side of things because they either completely ignored what he was doing or aided in the elaborate scheme. Obviously it is the latter but which ever version you choose, the coaches were complicit in the scheme. You also cannot equate it to the bag game in the sense of coaches “turning a blind eye.” Tennessee can hand out as many McDonald’s bags full of cash but they still have to coach and put those players in positions to win on game day. Michigan was actively hurting the integrity of the game day experience to their own unfair advantage.

Rick Neuheisel was on Sirius XM radio this morning talking about this staffer being next to the UM DC last year during the tOSU game, and he would wait until Day sent in the play before furiously sending signals to the D.  Not only the staffer, but other coaches and players who all evidently knew the tOSU signals.  Neuheisal went over his story in great detail and is convinced that this information will be the end of the Harbaugh era at UM (will go to the Bears, which of course is widely speculated anyway).

The NCAA will not act before season end because of their processes, and I don't think the conference will act this season either.  The question is whether UM will sack up and sack Jim.  They have to know that it is appropriate, but will they sacrifice this season?  (Of course, they should imo.)

They won’t. A national championship is worth potentially hundreds of millions of dollars. They’ll beg for forgiveness later.

That assumes that UM is in the playoffs.  Their schedule is back loaded, so that may be probable, but not a done deal yet.

The most entertaining outcome would be watching the season play out and UM falling apart because their success was based on knowing the signs.  I assume there is no way they can continue doing it since they will be under a microscope.

I'm glad someone did.  Supposedly they've done this to over 15 schools, so it's not just against conference rivals. Which means, I hope we've changed our signals before the game next year....
