I think this last tangent just goes to show that most people, willingly or not, socialize with people with similar political beliefs.

It’s also not surprising that the vast majority of posters on this board believe they and the people they know are getting more “liberal”.

Still stuck in the mid-40s as an incumbent is such an awful place to be.

Also NV polls always underestimate the Democrats, because of Vegas.  Republicans always seem to lead in the polls. I mean, just ask Senator Angle, Senator Heck and Trump, who totally won NV, right?

Yeah, if you're an incumbent and you aren't at 50%, you are in trouble.

For the sake of discussion, let’s say Milennials get no more “conservative” as they get older. Going through some of the positions in my head.

Love some of the social stances. Drug legalization, gay marriage (don’t care), less emphasis on gun control, less in favor of abortion.

Hate the outrage mob mentality/political correctness. Extremely worried about their interpretation of the first amendment.

I think they’ve gotten screwed by student debt situation, but populist candidate/movement will eventually vote to erase some or all of that.

As an aside, I am concerned about their overall diminished work ethic. I’ve seen it in my profession just since I’ve been working. They come in expecting more for less.

I’ll think of other things as they come.

LOLZ at the idea of the majority of millennials becoming anything close to conservative. Conservative millennials will be the overwhelming minority as they are now. Once millennials take over it’s a fast track to overly progressive views only emboldened by Gen Z.

There will be healthcare for all. Education will be a priority as our kids will not go through the same bs we did. Think marijuana is the end? Watch out for psychedelics. After that who knows. Anyone will be able to marry anyone and most will not care. Women will do any job a man does and be better at it. Racism? In case you haven’t noticed sex and the inevitable offspring is prevalent across racial lines. This trend will only continue. Work ethic? Robots will be programmed with a superb work ethic. Young people are moving to cities in record numbers, vacating small towns, and connecting with those around them. The Internet and social media changed the game.

I'd like to know why gr thinks millenials are less in favor of gun control and abortion

And pc/anti first amendment thing is severely overblown by the right wing media. The people you are afraid of are dorks looking for attention.

The kids marching in the street is fake news. Women are having less sex now than before and abortions are a thing of the past.

As an old man millenial (36) I can tell you that in general the homophobia, transphobia, and (more recently emphasized) racism from the gop is completely off-putting to people in this generation. The gop will drop that eventually, but it will be interesting to see if it's too late.

Even the "conservative" millenials I know are turned off completely by the toxic social platform of Republicans.

I think the last Texas legislative session pissed a lot of people off. Most people think Dan Patrick is a disgusting loon. It’s sad that Abbott has taken a backseat to that creep. Unfortunately, it looks like potty Patrick’s strategy to keep Texas red is to clamp down on the social issues and drive us as far right as possible and it makes me sick. Next year, we might see a bathroom bill and school vouchers put in place.

its also very disappointing that over 80% of Texans support medical marijuana and I’d bet over 50% of Texans support recreational marijuana, but the legislature totally ignores that while they continue to fight about bathrooms.

As far as the PC thing goes that absolutely started on the Left.  The Right is using now too, which I disagree with. I don’t care to force people to apologize for saying anything unapproved.

Most millennials were in or soon to be entering high school when columbine happened. They’ve seen the continued non action by republicans on that front

I'll check out those links in a bit.

What I meant is right wing media is fixated on pc zealotry as a scare tactic. It's right up there with "black crime" and a teacher having kids learn a song about Obama.

It’s always been worse on the Left. There was even a movie called PCU with a young Jeremy Piven that was made before I got to college making fun of it. We’ve only “progressed” since then.

PCU was before you got into college?

Man, I hate to break it to you, but you aren't old enough to have an opinion on political views vis a vis aging.

I was at Ut 97-01. I’m 39, with 4 kids.  I hope to have a long way to go, but already my views have evolved from supporting Ralph Nader to conservative today. It’s only anecdotal, but I’m going off my experience.   I’m sure my thoughts on a lot of things will shift over time.

I'm not disproving your thesis. Just saying, that's all.

I agree with the others, I've gotten more liberal. Then again, I'd never consider an idiot like Nader. I voted for Dole.

Getting more conservative as you get older (and have more of a stake in the status quo) is one thing, but is a separate thing then what is going on here and why millennials are not going to defect to the GOP in droves as they approach 40.  Because this is not the conservative people and the liberal people, this is the Trump people and a big jumbled mess of everyone else.  Including a lot of people like me who 4 years ago would have happily described themselves as socially liberal and fiscally conservative.  I still would, but priority #1 is stopping this systematic destruction of American values and government.  If the GOP entirely goes down in flames and is replaced with a completely new fiscally conservative party that is free from the yoke of "Christians" and ethnonationalism and has modern views on social policies, I could be wooed back.  But the stench of this will be on the GOP for a long time and I can't see casting a ballot for a person who has aligned themselves with this movement.

Who is forcing people to apologize?  Evidence of a forced apology?

I'm sure you're okay with certain people just dropping n-bombs left and right, so it's cool.

Lulz at the Boomers being "conservative."  They fully support the welfare state through entitlements and they just want to prop that up even if it means the death of everything else.

Here’s a local example of what I think he’s talking about:

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/professor-apologizes-for-calling-gop-candidate-nice-guy-on-twitter

Also there are some weird things going on like comedians going back and apologizing for some of their past material, or deciding that certain things are off limits.

I think you called me racist one time on here and I’m not sure what that was about.

Even in that link, it doesn’t say the university forced him to apologize.  I haven’t seen anywhere where there has been a forced apology. And I’d gladly welcome evidence.

Protip for the olds here. I'm a 31 year old millennial who just bought a house, has a young daughter, and got a huge pay increase when I took this job last year right around the time she was born. If anything I'm even more liberal now and even more willing to pay higher taxes now because I am so sick of all of the old whites giving zero fucks about any social services beyond SS and Medicare (they hypocritically think somehow these aren't socialist-like policies), sick of them supporting a party that is doing nothing to help the majority of Americans, and completely denying the overwhelming evidence that shows we're destroying this world with carbon emissions.

Like I said earlier, the idea that millennials are going to have kids and then start voting for the party that wants to gut public education so the Koch's can have a tax cut is laughable.

congrats homie, on several counts.

Similar vein as above - I'm enjoying the economy as far as my 401k, IRAs, and other investments are concerned.  I also remember the housing market going bananas in 2007.

Yeah it's wild that we're somehow on board with gutting public school education funding in favor of charter schools that often skirt around accreditation. I really didn't want to move way out to the suburbs just for the stereotypical "schools are better reason" but it completely changes when you're thinking about your kid. At the very least it's in an area that isn't pure white flight but a very good proportional mix of the greater atlanta area's racial makeup.

I know Brisket and a few others have talked about Betsy Devos being a big reason suburban moms are starting to leave the notion of voting whatever their husbands do. I can only hope we see that reflected come November.

Just watched the Utah Senate debate.  Pretty fucking civil. Wilson's last remarks were along the lines of  "please vote. I hope you'll vote for me but if you choose to vote for Mr. Romney, that's fine, he's a great guy".

Posted

The notion that people become more conservative as the age hasn't been proven to be statistically accurate. A study I read about a few years ago demonstrated that the events that take place in your early voting years tend to "bake in" the party that you vote for. Here's a good Upshot piece that shows that data:

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/07/08/upshot/how-the-year-you-were-born-influences-your-politics.html

And, to discount an anecdotal story told above, I voted Nader in '96 and '00. Since then, my political views have only solidified - albeit, I'm more "pragmatic" now in how I think change can be affected.
