Texas Longhorns recruiting: 2023 OT Ian Reed on the radar

Texas signed a superb offensive line class in the 2022 cycle, and the Longhorns are already establishing new targets in 2023.

www.on3.com

The Texas Longhorns have established a number of top targets in the 2023 class.

One that could be added to that top target list in the near future is offensive tackle Ian Reed(Austin, Texas/Vandegrift).

The 6-foot-6, 295-pounder impressed multiple members of the Texas staff in Vandegrift’s playoff loss to Austin Westlake December 4.

The 25-6A Offensive Lineman of the Year has seen the interest from the Longhorns spike since a strong playoff performance.

“Yes sir, I’ve talked to Coach Milwee,” Reed told On3 Sunday. “And I saw Coach Flood a couple of weeks ago when he came by the school.“

Milwee’s message about the Longhorns to Reed is a simple one.

“He wants to build a program with high caliber athletes that are players. The goal is to win championships.”

With the interest spiking since the first week in December, an offer may be in the cards in the coming weeks.

“Texas is highly interested. I would say Cal too.”

Reed currently has offers from TCU, Colorado, Kansas, UTSA, Tulsa and North Texas. Baylor, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Kansas State join Texas and California in showing serious interest.

North Texas was the first school to offer on October 16. Colorado was the first Power 5 offer October 25. TCU is the most recent offer, December 12.

TCU offensive line coach A.J. Ricker is the best relationship developed thus far.

Also plays for the Vandegrift rugby team. They began practice in early December.

Grew up playing soccer and rugby , in addition to football. Played goalie in soccer as a youth.

Reed’s father played soccer at Miami (OH). And he played rugby professionally for more than a decade.

Attended college games at TCU and Baylor (Texas game) this season. Camped at UTSA in June.

Reed plans to major in either meteorology or kinesiology.

Interesting discussion on geographic results for recruiting in 2022 Class -- Texas did much better in DFW while aggy pretty much owned  H-Town recruiting.

@golfclap's favorite ex-asst had North H-Town as coverage area so hopefully Tashard does a much better job there + Choice recruits GA & FL well too.

No doubt that more progress in 2023 has to be made by Texas in recruiting the Houston area -- hopefully the new WR coach can really help there as well.

It also seems like more improvement needs to happen in the Horns recruiting department to really expand UT's national recruiting too.

The Stampede: Looking at the big board for the 2023 class
NICK HARRIS

With Early Signing Day and the majority of the 2022 class in the rearview, a lot of the focus is now shifting towards the upcoming 2023 class.

Since arriving on campus in January, Steve Sarkisian and his staff have been noticeably active in recruiting future classes, as the Longhorns have already established inroads with multiple high-priority targets in the 2023 class.

With a busy spring of visits and recruiting the current junior class ahead, Texas is still continuing to churn out offers and build on relationships in hopes of securing back-to-back No. 1 classes in the Big 12.

Big prizes such as Arch Manning, Rueben Owens, and Johntay Cook are the obvious viable options for Texas heading into the spring, but which recruits across all position groups will Texas look to add to its roster?

In this week’s edition of The Stampede, Horns247’s weekly gathering of recruiting info, we break down the 2023 class position-by-position to get a full picture of Texas' big board heading into the 2022 calendar year.

QUARTERBACK

Targets:

Arch Manning, New Orleans (La.) Isidore Newman (No. 1 QB, No. 1 overall)

On the Radar:

Jackson Arnold, Denton (Texas) Guyer (No. 7 QB, No. 72 overall)

When it comes down to it, it is truly Arch or bust for Texas at the quarterback position in the 2023 class, and the staff seems to be just fine with that. Despite some concern from the fanbase, a source close to our Mike Roach reiterated recently that the addition of Quinn Ewers does nothing to affect Manning's interest level in the Longhorns. A busy spring of official visits is expected, but Texas remains squarely in the mix.

In looking around at other options, a weak class in the state of Texas at the position leaves Jackson Arnold as the only worthy prospect. Quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee swung by and saw Arnold at a playoff game earlier this fall, but that race has started to heat up with Notre Dame, Alabama, Ohio State and others getting involved.

RUNNING BACK

Targets:

Rueben Owens, El Campo (Texas) (No. 2 RB, No. 27 overall)

Javin Simpkins, Miami (Fla.) Norland (No. 16 RB, No. 238 overall)

On the Radar:

Kedrick Reescano, New Caney (Texas) (No. 13 RB, No. 219 overall)

Kalib Hicks, Denton (Texas) Ryan (No. 26 RB, No. 436 overall)

Much like the quarterback position, the running back position is primarily focused on one guy: Rueben Owens. The addition of former Georgia Tech running backs coach Tashard Choice has only helped Texas in the recruitment of Owens, as the two have a previous strong relationship that led to Owens taking an unofficial visit to Georgia Tech last summer. Along with Choice's relationship with Owens is his relationship with former Georgia Tech commit Javin Simpkins out of Miami. After taking just one running back in 2022, the Longhorns could look to take two in 2023, with Simpkins being an ideal second punch to the five-star Owens.

WIDE RECEIVER

Targets:

Jalen Hale, Longview (Texas) (No. 4 WR, No. 30 overall)

Johntay Cook, DeSoto (Texas) (No. 7 WR, No. 40 overall)

Jaquaize Pettaway, Cypress (Texas) Langham Creek (No. 8 WR, No. 42 overall)

Braylon James, Del Valle (Texas) (No. 11 WR, No. 76 overall)

Jaden Greathouse, Austin (Texas) Westlake (No. 16 WR, No. 106 overall)

Ryan Niblett, Aldine (Texas) Eisenhower (No. 11 ATH, No. 108 overall)

Ashton Cozart, Flower Mound (Texas) Marcus (No. 23 WR, No. 167 overall)

Chris Palfreeman, Fort Worth (Texas) All Saints (No. 70 WR, No. 492 overall)

On the Radar:

Cordale Russell, North Mesquite (Texas) (No. 25 WR, No. 218 overall) *TCU commit

Noble Johnson, Rockwall (Texas) (No. 40 WR, No. 298 overall)

Montrel Hatten, Carthage (Texas) (No. 45 WR, No. 341 overall)

Anthony Evans, Converse (Texas) Judson (No. 74 WR, No. 517 overall) *Arkansas commit

Kaleb Black, Klein (Texas) Oak (NR)

The 2023 class has become an absolutely loaded cycle in the state of Texas at the wide receiver position, and Texas has already built on key early relationships with multiple top targets. Having the luxury of not necessarily having to leave the state for a receiver is rare, but after the Longhorns took just Brenen Thompson and Savion Red in 2022, I could see the future receivers coach loading up at the position in 2023 with targets from across the country. Exactly who those targets may be will become clearer as we get into the spring.

As for the targets on the board now, Johntay Cook and Jaden Greathouse jump out immediately as the most likely additions to the 2023 class. That being said, Texas is in the top five for both Ashton Cozart and Chris Palfreeman, and have made its way to a figurative top grouping for Jaquaize Pettaway, Jalen Hale, and Ryan Niblett.

TIGHT END

Targets:

Walker Lyons, Folsom (Calif.) (No. 4 TE, No. 74 overall)

Lafayette Kaiuway, Arlington (Texas) Sam Houston (No. 24 TE, No. 388 overall)

Will Randle, New Orleans (La.) Isidore Newman (NR)

Tight ends coach Jeff Banks will have his first opportunity to truly recruit a tight end prospect in the 2023 class with key relationships having already been developed. Will Randle has let it be known that his recruitment is separate from his close friend Arch Manning's recruitment, but Texas has made it realistic to picture both in the same spot. However, I see Lafayette Kaiuway as the most likely addition to the class when it's all said and done.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Targets:

Harris Sewell, Odessa (Texas) Permian (No. 2 IOL, No. 69 overall)

TJ Shanahan, Austin (Texas) Westlake (No. 4 IOL, No. 115 overall)

Markis Deal, Garland (Texas) Naaman Forest (No. 5 IOL, No. 123 overall) *also being recruited as a defensive line prospect

Olaus Alinen, Windsor (Conn.) The Loomis Chaffee School (No. 12 OT, No. 125 overall)

Isaiah Robinson, Arlington (Texas) Lamar (No. 14 OT, No. 165 overall)

Jaydon Chatman, Harker Heights (Texas) (No. 13 IOL, No. 247 overall)

Colton Thomasson, Smithson Valley (Texas) (No. 23 OT, No. 357 overall) *Texas A&M commit

Andre Cojoe, Mansfield (Texas) Timberview (No. 32 IOL, No. 465 overall)

Connor Stroh, Frisco (Texas) Wakeland (NR)

On the Radar:

Isaiah Kema, Wolfforth (Texas) Frenship (No. 16 IOL, No. 278 overall)

Trevor Goosby, Melissa (Texas) (No. 34 OT, No. 449 overall)

Narado Stoker, South Oak Cliff (Texas) (NR)

After signing a loaded 2022 class on the offensive line (one that may not be done yet with Devon Campbell still uncommitted), Texas could have the luxury of being picky with the position group in 2023 for the first time in over a decade. Among the elites that Texas will pursue, Harris Sewell is an option that Texas has a solid shot at landing. TJ Shanahan, Isaiah Robinson, and Olaus Alinen are guys Texas has at least put themselves on the map for, but it's the project guys like Andre Cojoe and Connor Stroh that Kyle Flood may find the most success with.

CORNERBACK

CB Javien Toviano (Photo: Nick Harris, 247Sports)
Targets:

Javien Toviano, Arlington (Texas) Martin (No. 5 CB, No. 28 overall)

Malik Muhammad, South Oak Cliff (Texas) (No. 6 CB, No. 46 overall)

Jayvon Thomas, South Oak Cliff (Texas) (No. 11 CB, No. 133 overall)

Jordan Matthews, Baton Rouge (La.) Woodlawn (No. 14 CB, No. 140 overall)

Micah Bell, Houston Kinkaid, (No. 16 CB, No. 146 overall) *also being recruited as a wide receiver

Daylen Austin, Long Beach (Calif.) Poly (No. 19 CB, No. 164 overall)

Rodrick Pleasant, Gardena (Calif.) Serra (No. 20 CB, No. 166 overall)

Vernon Glover Jr., Dickinson (Texas) (No. 50 CB, No. 528 overall)

TayShawn Wilson, Katy (Texas) Mayde Creek (NR)

On the Radar:

Jaylon Braxton, Frisco (Texas) Lone Star (No. 37 CB, No. 364 overall)

Despite flipping Terrance Brooks on Signing Day, talent and depth at the cornerback position is still needed in the 2023 class. It starts up top with Javien Toviano who is one of the most-wanted recruits for Texas in the class in my book. Director of High School Relations and Dallas-area aficionado Chris Gilbert may end up winning big at South Oak Cliff in the next couple of classes, with Malik Muhammad and Jayvon Thomas being two key pieces in 2023. This is a position that I could see Texas going national for, as Jordan Matthews, Daylen Austin, and Rodrick Pleasant all have shown healthy amounts of interest in the Longhorns thus far. Cornerback may end up being where it gets wild in the 2023 class.

SAFETY

Targets:

Joenel Aguero, Danvers (Mass.) St. John's Prep (No. 2 S, No. 45 overall)

Derek Williams, New Iberia (La.) Westgate (No. 3 S, No. 51 overall)

Peyton Bowen, Denton (Texas) Guyer (No. 4 S, No. 58 overall)

Braxton Myers, Coppell (Texas) (No. 6 S, No. 100 overall)

Ryan Yaites, Denton (Texas) Guyer (No. 7 S, No. 121 overall)

Jamel Johnson, Arlington (Texas) Seguin (No. 9 S, No. 136 overall) *Texas commit

Daniel Demery, Dallas Parish Episcopal (No. 25 S, No. 258 overall)

Deldrick Madison, Duncanville (Texas) (No. 27 S, No. 304 overall)

Anthony White, Abernathy (Texas) (NR)

On the Radar:

Brenden Jordan, Mansfield (Texas) (No. 17 S, No. 183 overall)

Texas has let it be known that they play on going big-game hunting for safeties in 2023 as Blake Gideon has keyed in on national recruits such as Joenel Aguero (who announced Sunday that he will take an unofficial visit to Texas on Jan. 21) and Derek Williams. While it seems as though Texas will lose out on Peyton Bowen, his teammate Ryan Yaites remains a possible option along with Deldrick Madison and newly-offered Anthony White. Landing a big early commitment from Jamel Johnson gives Texas some flexibility and luxury recruiting the position group, and they are taking full advantage at the moment.

LINEBACKER & EDGE

Targets:

Anthony Hill, Denton (Texas) Ryan (No. 1 LB, No. 10 overall)

Matayo Uiagalelei, Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco (No. 1 EDGE, No. 19 overall)

Tausili Akana, Lehi (Utah) Skyridge (No. 5 EDGE, No. 50 overall)

Liona Lefau, Kahuku (Hawaii) (No. 19 LB, No. 233 overall)

Carson Dean, Carrollton (Texas) Hebron (No. 27 EDGE, No. 386 overall)

Derion Gullette, Marlin (Texas) (No. 33 EDGE, No. 420 overall)

S'Maje Burrell, North Crowley (Texas) (No. 33 LB, No. 423 overall)

Brad Spence, Klein (Texas) Forest (NR)

On the Radar:

Isaiah Crawford, Post (Texas) (No. 11 EDGE, No. 144 overall) *Texas Tech commit

Enow Etta, Colleyville (Texas) Covenant Christian (No. 13 EDGE, No. 157 overall)

Christian Brathwaite, Cypress (Texas) Ranch (No. 22 LB, No. 242 overall)

Corey Kelly, Clear Falls (Texas) (No. 32 LB, No. 358 overall)

Braylan Shelby, Friendswood (Texas) (No. 29 EDGE, No. 393 overall)

Dylan Rogers, Cypress (Texas) Woods (NR)

Alex Kilgore, Katy (Texas) Paetow (NR)

Of all position groups, linebacker is the most fluid in the 2023 class at the moment with a flurry of offers expected in the coming months. Texas is taking its time picking out offers at the linebacker and EDGE positions, but it remains for good reason with solid relationships having already been built with Anthony Hill, Liona Lefau, Derion Gullette, S'Maje Burrell, and Brad Spence. Two names that jump out on this list are Matayo Uiagalelei and Tausili Akana who both of which have taken visits to Austin. Return trips would signify high interest moving forward.

DEFENSIVE LINE

Targets:

David Hicks, Allen (Texas) (No. 2 DL, No. 5 overall)

Jayden Wayne, Tacoma (Wash.) Lincoln (No. 5 DL, No. 31 overall)

Jordan Renaud, Tyler (Texas) Legacy (No. 8 DL, No. 61 overall)

Avion Carter, Amarillo (Texas) Tascosa (No. 12 DL, No. 79 overall)

Anthony James, Wylie (Texas) East (No. 18 DL, No. 105 overall) *Texas A&M commit

Markis Deal, Garland (Texas) Naaman Forest (No. 5 IOL, No. 123 overall) *Also being recruited on the offensive line

Dylan Spencer, Houston C.E. King (No. 24 DL, No. 170 overall)

Zalance Heard, Monroe (La.) Neville (No. 25 DL, No. 180 overall)

Ashton Porter, Cypress (Texas) Ranch (No. 31 DL, No. 209 overall)

On the Radar:

Trey Wilson, Garland (Texas) Lakeview Centennial (No. 51 DL, No. 335 overall)

After signing a large number of prospects up front on the defensive side of the ball in 2022, Bo Davis and Pete Kwiatkowski have the luxury of being a little picky in 2023 and can devote increased amounts of time to top targets such as David Hicks and Jayden Wayne. Avion Carter and Ashton Porter are the two that jump out as possible members of the class a year from now, but I expect the class to fill out with guys that get added to the board in the coming months.

ATHLETE

Targets:

Dalton Brooks, Shiner (Texas) (No. 5 ATH, No. 49 overall)

- Being recruited mainly as a safety with potential at wide receiver

Bravion Rogers, La Grange (Texas) (No. 6 ATH, No. 56 overall)

- Being recruited mainly as a defensive back with potential at wide receiver

Mikal Harrison-Pilot, Temple (Texas) (No. 10 ATH, No. 102 overall)

- Being recruited as both a defensive back and wide receiver

Jahlil McClain, Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco (No. 25 ATH, No. 292 overall)

- Potential on both sides of the ball with wide receiver being the most likely fit at the next level

On the Radar:

Samuel Omosigho, Crandall (Texas) (No. 34 ATH, No. 410 overall)

Texas didn't end up signing a prospect in 2022 that has position flexibility on both sides of the ball, and while that isn't necessarily a bad thing, it is something nice to play with when signees arrive on campus. Steve Sarkisian and Co. have a few targets that could be that flexible option in college in 2023, and Dalton Brooks and Bravion Rogers are two key guys to watch to fit that mold.

I saw 2 pancakes and the numbers were 32 and 55 on defense. Neither were starters. He did have some nice blocks vs Vasek though.

Looks like mostly held his own, although he did give up a couple of big disruption plays vs Vasek, including one that led to an interception, which was about a magnitude better than the rest of his offensive line. Burke was murdering the right tackle.

It was a good battle between Vasek and Reed. Both did well at times. Burke did well.  I would have loved to see Duncanville vs Westlake for selfish reasons. I would have liked to see Burke take on a good tackle. He is always against a RT. Burke vs Cam would have been great tape to watch.

Was the Jaquaize Pettaway article written by some bot or algorithm? Because it sure had an odd way of using his full name throughout (if you didn’t catch it, it was “Jaquaize Pettaway”) and even when there were opportunities to use “he,” the author would typically use “Jaquaize Pettaway” or “Pettaway.”

The Jerod Douglas story has a Texas angle, as UT claimed there was some dirty shit going on during the recruitment as we battled Baylor.  Legend has it Baylor assistant Trooper Taylor left messages for Douglas’ family, claiming to be a Texas assistant, and that we were no longer interested. Douglas then picked Baylor. That seems simplistic, but I have a good source. And Taylor is well known for his bullshit.

A few years later in Waco, we beat their asses 63-35 on Thanksgiving morning (10 am kickoff and we played Baylor because aggy was on probation), and after the game, in one of the wildest scenes I’ve witnessed in my career, Bucky Godbolt raced across the field, screaming at Chuck Reedy, “And we didn’t have to cheat!” over and over again. Godbolt was still pissed about Douglas.

Didn’t Jerod Douglas want to come here but he was under 18 and his mom said she’d refuse to sign the LOI or some shit? That was back in the days of getting the Robert Heard fax at work and wearing out the Statesman’s 900 number for Suzanne Halliburton updates lol…

I remember Trooper Taylor when he was at TN.  I don't even have amazing inside sources, and even I knew how dirty he was.  It was common knowledge.

At some point, Kirby Smart is going to have to show that his staff can do something beside fuck up its highly ranked QBs. That's going to be an issue with Manning.

You think Arch will wait and see how Texas and Georgia's QBs look next year before committing?
