Texas Recruiting Notes 2023: Strippers, Monkeys, and 5-Stars

I think the key thing to 2023 RB recruiting will be if Robinson stays for a 3rd year to be the lead back after Bijan and Johnson leave. Keilan, Brooks, Blue, and Wisner is a good room.

I would love to be proven wrong, but I question if Keilan could ever be a guy who could carry the ball 15-20+ times a game. 2023 should be the Brooks show and if Keilan wants to stick around then that’s a bonus and we will obviously get him his touches.

Owens is not the top TB on the board for Texas. There are a lot of red flags involving the guy, including having a close relative deeply involved with violent gang shit that is playing a role in his recruitment. I'm of the opinion that Texas is drifting on this one, and they might be very much okay with it.

Comparing this recruitment to Evans isn't a bad analog, but I think there is a better one - Evan Stewart. Texas ended up bailing on the Evan Stewart recruitment way earlier than we all thought they did. They were happy to let Stewart think they were still interested by taking his calls and texts, largely because it became obvious that he was just using it to drive up the price on the aggies. This happened to ATM with several OOS recruits and other schools too. This may sound like fan fiction, but it's level one, fwiw.

So that's my theory on this cycle with this guy. If Texas misses on another couple of targets, they're going to keep at Owens because it is regret-free for them in terms of if he comes here or goes to ATM for something absurd. They have a TB they already like a ton anyway.

One of his buddies is now involved with the personnel evaluation side of recruiting at ATM. That guy has shown up after this last class and now believes that ATM will get anybody they want. Wiltfong isn't any difference than the rest of us right now in that we have no idea whether this new source has a filter or a clue. Elko was a pretty reliable narrator for Wiltfong, but it's one thing to be the DC involved daily in hands on ways because he was a recruiting animal, and another altogether for a film room admin when it comes to having a finger on the pulse of a program's recruiting.

Just tickles me pink that Firesheets's boyfriend is Wiltfong's new Aggy source. So amusing.

I would think he'd put on muscle in college and he's listed at 6-2, 205 as a junior in high school.  From his hudl, seems like he could play the position.

The Stampede: Looking at the most pivotal visits of the summer for the Longhorns

The Stampede: Looking at the most pivotal visits of the summer for the Longhorns
MIKE ROACH

The time for official visits is upon us, and the Longhorns are lining up weekends in June with groups of big-name talent each weekend.

Those weekends will produce expected swings in recruitments, change the footing as some schools rise and fall, and in some cases result in a few commitments. To that end, there are some visits that become more important than others.

It may be a factor of timing, current standing in a recruitment or just a need to make more progress at one position over another. After looking over the visitors for this summer, we've crunched each recruitment to figure out where Texas can get the most value.

In this week's edition of The Stampede, Horns247's weekly gathering of recruiting intel, we discuss some of the most important visits of the summer for Texas and the targets they are recruiting.

(Photo: © Tim Warner, Getty)

Arch Manning, QB, New Orleans Isidore Newman

Visit Date: June 17-19

There are two scenarios in this class, and they differ drastically on an expected ceiling. Those scenarios are what this class looks like with Arch Manning or without Arch Manning. It’s not to say that landing Manning is the only way to succeed, but a large number of players have talked about the desire to play with the five-star passer at the next level. Manning will make what is anticipated to be his last official visit of the recruitment. For Texas, the question will be whether Manning chooses to leave Austin a believer in Steve Sarkisian and the future of the program or whether he wants to see more in the fall. First, Texas will need to make a bigger impression than Georgia and make a big enough impression to push Manning into a decision this summer to kick the momentum off in the 2023 class.

Spencer Shannon, TE, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei

Visit Date: June 10-12

Though the tight end picture is still very broad, I feel Shannon is a guy who fits as a true in-line blocker and receiving threat that this roster needs. Texas is the only non-west coast school Shannon is considering, and the Longhorns could land a big offensive piece with a strong visit. Sure, Texas would love to pursue Duce Robinson and they have a few other options on the board at the moment, but Shannon is looking to make a June decision, and the trip to Austin is the last one he has scheduled at the moment. Jeff Banks could close the deal on Shannon this summer and bring in a complete tight end prospect with college-ready size to contribute immediately.

Ian Reed (Photo: Brian Perroni, 247Sports)
Ian Reed, OL, Austin Vandergrift

Visit Date: June 24-26

Reed will make a big round of visits through the summer seeing Wisconsin, Clemson, Oklahoma State, Alabama before ending his run back home in Austin with an official visit to Texas. Kyle Flood built a great foundation to the offensive line class last year, but it would help if he could assemble another strong class and continue to add talent at the position. Texas was able to get in on Reed early in the process and he’s been able to forge a good relationship with Kyle Flood. Reed will see a couple of bona fide offensive line programs along the way. If Texas can outlast those trips and make a big impression when he’s on campus, Reed could be part of another strong offensive line class. A versatile tackle/guard with great size and athleticism, Reed is in the conversation for me as the top offensive lineman in the state of Texas for 2023.

Deandre Moore, WR, Los Alamitos (Calif.)

Visit Date: June 24-26

Moore will return to Austin for the final summer visit a week after going to Louisville. Moore is the type of dynamic receiving threat Texas needs to add to this roster moving forward, and they appear to be in position to land Moore despite his interest in Louisville and his ties to the USC program. After a spring visit, the confidence level on Moore went up with a chance to reel him in during the late June visit. Adding Moore only raises the floor of this wide receiver class which could be among the best in the country depends on how it shapes out. This will be a huge trip for Brennan Marion and the Texas staff as they attempt to pull in one of the nation’s best.

Cedric Baxter (Photo: Andrew Ivins, 247Sports)
Cedric Baxter, RB, Orlando (Fla.) Edgewater

Visit Date: June 10-12

The Baxter visit will be important depending on how the race for Rueben Owens plays out over the next few months. Tashard Choice has been able to lay the foundation for this recruitment by building a strong relationship and getting him to campus in the spring for an unofficial trip. Baxter’s recruitment would provide the Longhorns with another answer in the case that Owens’ recruitment goes sideways on them. Can Texas cement themselves as a contender and even possible leader in this recruitment? Texas will get a great shot to set the tone as one of his early official visits, but they will have to also wait out a few others.

Braylan Shelby, EDGE, Friendswood

Visit Date: June 24-26

Shelby is a huge need from a talent and positional perspective. Shelby is a player with an NFL body, and it could be argued that finding legit edge rushing bodies is the most important need in the program right now. Texas seems to be a school to beat for Shelby right now, and they need to start adding some premier edge talent in this class, and Shelby could be an early building block there. This recruitment could end in the summer, and Texas will have a chance to make a final impression going head-to-head with programs like Tennessee, Florida State, and USC. If Georgia or Alabama get involved it could make things interesting, but Texas is treating Shelby like a major priority and need to come out of June in the top position.

Colton Vasek (Photo: Brian Perroni, 247Sports)
Colton Vasek, EDGE, Austin Westlake

Visit Date: Late June

Vasek hasn’t publicized his visit dates yet but is expected to be in during the month of June. His familiarity with the program having grown up the son of a former player living in close proximity makes this race a bit different. Vasek will visit some big out of state programs along with Texas, and the Longhorns probably have some work to do in order to make a push and add the productive and projectable defensive line body needed to move forward into the SEC. Texas will have to do battle with programs like Clemson, Oregon and Oklahoma while Alabama and Georgia remain in the picture as well. It could be argued this is the most pivotal defensive visit of the year given the need and their current position in the recruitment.

Liona Lefau, LB, Kahuku (Hawaii)

Visit Date: June 10-12

The Longhorns are in the race but will have to overcome the trend of Hawaiian prospects who end up out west. Utah, Oregon, BYU and USC are also vying for the instinctive defender, and each program’s higher concentration of Polynesian players on the roster will be an advantage over Texas. While it’s not a must, most people I speak with feel Lefau would want to play and go to school with others who share his background. The Longhorns will have to overcome a few of those factors, but Jeff Choate has been chewing up the miles between Austin and Hawaii to build that relationship.

Derion Gullette (Photo: Mike Roach, 247Sports)
Derion Gullette, LB, Marlin

Visit Date: June 24-26

The Longhorns need answers at the linebacker position, and they will host their top targets this summer. While Anthony Hill is still in the mix, most feel that Texas A&M holds the edge for the five-star Denton Ryan linebacker. That makes the race for Marlin linebacker Derion Gullette all the more important. A similar athlete at the position as Hill despite playing a lower level of competition, Gullette possesses all of the skill to provide a big impact at the next level. The Longhorns will get a chance make a statement in his recruitment in late June. The recruitment likely won’t wrap up there, but Texas needs to keep establishing footing and building toward a win in this department.

Hunter Osborne, DL, Trussville (Ala.) Hewitt-Trussville

Visit Date: Sometime in June (expected)

We haven’t nailed down an exact visit date for the four-star Alabama defensive lineman, but we expect him to take a trip during the summer. The Longhorns were late to offer, but they’ve been able to make up some ground via a furious push from Bo Davis and a lot of involvement from Steve Sarkisian. If Texas does get him on campus, the presence of Justice Finkley could help the ‘Horns make a splash and possibly land him down the line. From a perspective of value, this visit is one of the most important as Osborne would add an SEC body up front and Texas has the opportunity to boost their standing with him.

The 6-foot-2, 228-pound On3 Consensus five-star has his five official visits lined up starting next month. He’ll visit OU, Alabama, USC, and Texas in the month of June, then see Texas A&M unofficially in late July, and use his final OV for College Station in the fall.

On Texas: “The tradition,” said Anthony Hill Sr. “That offense is going to be just fine. Defense needs a little work. Steve Sarkisian and Jeff Banks offered him at Alabama and has a great relationship with the staff. The day Sark took the Texas job, he called Anthony Jr. He has friends in Austin like Ja’Tavion Sanders and Austin Jordan.”

The Hills have a connection to the Longhorns. Anthony Hill Jr played pee-wee football for the Irving Eagles in 2015, coached by lifetime Longhorn Michael Huff, who stays close to the Hill family.

Maybe Texas has higher priorities than Moore? Doesn't seem to be a high price, but it's not my money. I know UL boosters are involved in legit NIL deals, but I don't know anything about black market "NIL" stuff or if Papa John has any involvement.

Top247 defensive lineman Hunter Osborne sets Texas official visit

Hudson Standish

In less than a month the Texas Longhorns have gone from completely out of the picture for 2023 Hewitt-Trussville (AL) defensive lineman Hunter Osborne to a legitimate contender for the high four-star's talent. Texas offered the 6-foot-3, 260-pounder in early May and ten days later the Horns made Osborne's top six before he even made a trip to Austin.

After speaking with Osborne today he now has an official visit set for Texas on June 17th through the 19th. The same weekend as No. 1 overall prospect Arch Manning's official visit to Austin.

Osborne has official visits scheduled to Clemson this weekend, Auburn the following weekend, and will take an official to Tennessee after he visits Austin. The No. 115 overall player in the 2023 class according to 247 doesn't have an official timeline set for his commitment but a source told Horns 247 that ideally he would like to have a decision made before the start of football season.

At 6-foot-3, 250 pounds, Hunter Osborne is ranked as the No. 128 player in the nation in the 2023 cycle according to the 247Sports Composite. He also ranks as the No. 17 DL in the country and the No. 12 overall prospect from the state of Alabama.

According to 247Sports' official evaluation of him, written by national recruiting analyst Cooper Petagna, Osborne has been "verified at 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds," and he "appears to possess growth potential to add additional weight to his frame."

"Displays good athleticism at the five-technique, flashes some ability to play inside on the interior," Petagna wrote of Osborne. "Flashes a good first step off the line of scrimmage, displaying good foot and body quickness at the point of attack. Plays with good knee bend and flexibility, showing the ability to bend the edge. Sudden rusher, moves efficiency in his pass rush. Can win with speed, quickness, and power. Shows the ability to go speed to power at the point of attack, plays with a good understanding of leverage and body control. Closes space quickly and flashes excellent backside pursuit ability. Appears to have a good motor.

"Already 250 pounds with some length, position projection will depend on how he physically develops into his body over the next year and a half. Has the ability to play out on the edge but possesses a more natural skill set inside as a three technique; anchoring the run and offering some pass rushing upside. Projects to a high level multi-year starter at a Power Five program at the next level with some developmental upside."
